Polypropylene (PP)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposite was compounded in a twin-screw extruder. The objective is to investigate the relationship between rheological properties and microstructure of the nanocompsite. The samples were taken along the screws. Effect of feeding rate on the dynamical rheological property development and microstructure of samples was investigated. The yield stress of nanocomposite was obtained using steady-state shear sweep. The intercalated structure was probed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rheological results showed that the complex viscosity of samples increased along the twin-screw extruder. In addition, with the decrease of feeding rate, the yield stress of nanocomposite increased and MMT was dispersed better in PP matrix. Finally, the relationship between dynamical rheological properties and the dispersed state of MMT was analyzed.

The performances of PP/MMT nanocomposite (70μm thick films), in terms of thermal and rheological properties were investigated. A twin-screw extruder was used to compound PP, MMT, compatibilizer, and extruded nanocomposite films were collected for test. All results were compared and the influence of MMT contents on the final properties were observed and reported. The thermal properties of PP had improved by increasing MMT content from 0-3 phr. However at 4 phr thermal stability of the nanocomposite had slightly dropped. In terms of rhelogical properties, the addition of MMT to the PP blend increased the complex viscosity of the nanocomposites, particularly at low frequency regions.

Blends of recycled LDPE and LLDPE were prepared by the twin-screw extruder at different ratios. Recycled LDPE was used as matrix in this work, LLDPE was used to improve the properties of RLDPE. Virgin LDPE was used in this study as a contrast. Rheological properties of the blends were carefully evaluated by a Haake rheometer and compared with pure LDPE. Rheological analysis shows that virgin LLDPE will promote the normal flow of RLDPE in the a large content and hinder the mobility of chain segments when in a small content of LLDPE. Consequently, the blends show potential applications in high-value products.
