Fabrication of biomimetic materials and scaffolds is usually a micro- or even nanoscale process; however, most testing and all manufacturing require larger-scale synthesis of nanoscale features. Here, we propose the utilization of naturally prefabricated three-dimensional (3D) spongin scaffolds that preserve molecular detail across centimeter-scale samples. The fine-scale structure of this collagenous resource is stable at temperatures of up to 1200°C and can produce up to 4 × 10–cm–large 3D microfibrous and nanoporous turbostratic graphite. Our findings highlight the fact that this turbostratic graphite is exceptional at preserving the nanostructural features typical for triple-helix collagen. The resulting carbon sponge resembles the shape and unique microarchitecture of the original spongin scaffold. Copper electroplating of the obtained composite leads to a hybrid material with excellent catalytic performance with respect to the reduction of p-nitrophenol in both freshwater and marine environments.

In this work, three-dimensional mesoporous MnO2, K/MnO2, Pt/MnO2 and K-Pt/MnO2 catalysts were prepared through hard-template method. The additional K/Pt had significantly improved the HCHO oxidation activity. The K-Pt/MnO2 catalyzed complete HCHO oxidation was achieved at 0℃ with space velocity (GHSV) at 50000 ml/(gand#183;h). With the excellent catalytic performance, K-Pt/MnO2 exhibited a higher ratio of Oads(surface adsorbed oxygen)/Olatt(surface lattice oxygen) and Mn3+/Mn4+ ions than the other catalysts. Meanwhile, it was still stable after running a 70h reaction. Overall, the K-Pt/MnO2 was a promising material for HCHO elimination.

Under the current double challenge of energy and the environment, an effective nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has become a very urgent need. However, the largest production of ammonia gas today is carried out by the Haber–Bosch process, which has many disadvantages, among which energy consumption and air pollution are typical. As the best alternative procedure, electrochemistry has received extensive attention. In this paper, a catalyst loaded with Fe3 clusters on the two-dimensional material C2N (Fe3@C2N) is proposed to achieve effective electrochemical NRR, and our first-principles calculations reveal that the stable Fe3@C2N exhibits excellent catalytic performance for electrochemical nitrogen fixation with a limiting potential of 0.57 eV, while also suppressing the major competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Our findings will open a new door for the development of non-precious single-cluster catalysts for effective nitrogen reduction reactions.
