RA Koster currently works as Associate Director of Bioanalytical Science at the LC–MS/MS department at PRA Health Sciences in the Laboratory in Assen, The Netherlands. He is responsible for the LC–MS/MS analytical method development and leads a team of method development analysts and scientists. As global microsampling specialist within PRA he is interested in all developments regarding microsampling and aims to continuously improve microsampling techniques. He has been working in the field of bioanalysis for 19 years, in which he performed and supervised numerous analytical method developments using LC–MS/MS. He started his career in 2001 at Pharma Bio-Research (before it was acquired by PRA) as an LC–MS/MS analyst. In 2005, he moved to the University Medical Center Groningen where he focused on the development and validation of analytical methods for drugs and drugs of abuse in matrices like blood, plasma, hair, saliva, dried blood spots and volumetric absorptive microsampling with LC–MS/MS. In 2015 he obtained his PhD on the subject ‘The influence of the sample matrix on LC–MS/MS method development and analytical performance’. In 2017, he started as Senior Scientist at PRA Health Sciences and in 2019, he accepted his current role of Associate Director of Bioanalytical Science. He is a (co-)author of more than 35 publications.

We developed and validated the Conceptual Assessment of Natural Selection (CANS), a multiple-choice test designed to assess how well college students understand the central principles of natural selection. The expert panel that reviewed the CANS concluded its questions were relevant to natural selection and generally did a good job sampling the specific concepts they were intended to assess. Student interviews confirmed questions on the CANS provided accurate reflections of how students think about natural selection. And, finally, statistical analysis of student responses using item response theory showed that the CANS did a very good job of estimating how well students understood natural selection. The empirical reliability of the CANS was substantially higher than the Force Concept Inventory, a highly regarded test in physics that has a similar purpose.

We have developed and validated a conceptual framework for understanding and teaching organismal homeostasis at the undergraduate level. The resulting homeostasis conceptual framework details critical components and constituent ideas underlying the concept of homeostasis. It has been validated by a broad range of physiology faculty members from community colleges, primarily undergraduate institutions, research universities, and medical schools. In online surveys, faculty members confirmed the relevance of each item in the framework for undergraduate physiology and rated the importance and difficulty of each. The homeostasis conceptual framework was constructed as a guide for teaching and learning of this critical core concept in physiology, and it also paves the way for the development of a concept inventory for homeostasis.

Abstract BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to report on the validation process of the Spanish version of a questionnaire that explores health science students’ attitudes towards women’s childbirth experiences. This questionnaire could help inform education programs to enhance the quality of woman-professional interactions, and to improve women’s experiences of childbirth. METHODS: A standardised procedure for the development and validation of the questionnaire included: item development and psychometric pre-validation, Cronbach’s Alpha and split-half coefficients calculation, test–retest and item-total correlation for the reliability analysis. Content validity was undertaken by Delphi method with sixteen panelists over two rounds. We determined the factor structure and refined and validated the questionnaire according to the responses of a cohort of 160 students using principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation. RESULTS: A 52-items questionnaire CAVE-st: (acronym for cuestionario de actitudes sobre vivencias y experiencias en el parto) was developed and validated. The questionnaire had a high construct validity, with a Cronbach´s alpha > 0.92. The intraclass correlations (0.80) indicated adequate test–retest reliability. The results of the exploratory factor analysis revealed fourteen latent components that explained more than the 70% of the observed total variance.CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish version of the questionnaire CAVE-st has been developed and validated. Its psychometrics indicate that it is a valid and reliable tool to assess health sciences students’ attitude towards women´s childbirth experience. Further work to translate and adapt the instrument in other cultures and languages will be undertaken.
