AbstractA new approach to quantitative analysis of the concentration of boron atoms in diamond using secondary- ion mass spectrometers with time-of-flight mass analyzers is proposed. Along with the known boron-containing lines (B, BC, BC_2), many lines related to cluster secondary ions BC_ N have been found in the mass spectrum; their intensity increases by one or two orders of magnitude when Bi_3 probe ions are used. Lines BC_4, BC_6, BC_2, and BC_8 have the highest intensity (in the descending order); when they are summed, the sensitivity increases by an order of magnitude in comparison with the known mode of detecting BC_2. The parameters of the boron δ-layer in single-crystal diamond films grown under optimal conditions have been measured to be unprecedented: the δ-layer width is about 2 nm, and the concentration is 6.4 × 10^20 cm^–3 (the boron concentrations for doped and undoped diamonds differ by four orders of magnitude).

Imaging energy filters can add new information to electron microscopic images with respect to energy-axis, so-called electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI). Recently, many good results have been reported using this imaging technique. ESI also allows high-contrast observation of unstained biological samples, becoming a trend of the field of morphology. We manufactured a new type of energy filter as a trial production. This energy filter consists of two magnets, and we call γ-filter since the trajectory of electrons shows ‘γ’-shape inside the filter. We evaluated the new energyγ-filter TEM with the γ-filter.Figure 1 shows schematic view of the electron optics of the γ-type energy filter. For the determination of the electron-optics of the γ-type energy filter, we used the TRIO (Third Order Ion Optics) program which has been developed for the design of high resolution mass spectrometers. The TRIO takes the extended fringing fields (EFF) into consideration. EFF makes it difficult to design magnetic energy filters with magnetic sector fields.

This paper presented a novel analytical method for calculating magnetic field in the slotted air gap of spoke-type permanent-magnet machines using conformal mapping. Firstly, flux density without slots and complex relative air-gap permeance of slotted air gap are derived from conformal transformation separately. Secondly, they are combined in order to obtain normalized flux density taking account into the slots effect. The finite element (FE) results confirmed the validity of the analytical method for predicting magnetic field and back electromotive force (BEMF) in the slotted air gap of spoke-type permanent-magnet machines. In comparison with FE result, the analytical solution yields higher peak value of cogging torque.
