High quality and transparent single crystals of undoped rutile TiO2, Al-doped rutile (Al : TiO2), and Zr-doped rutile (Zr : TiO2) have been grown successfully by tilting-mirror-type floating zone (TMFZ) using travelling solvent floating (TSFZ) technique. The effect of doping on the electronic and optical properties of rutile has been studied experimentally as well as by simulation calculations. The effect of doping on the quality of crystals was also investigated by observing optical micrograph and measuring etch pits density that reveals the presence of defects. Undoped rutile crystals were dark blue and comprised many low-angle grain boundaries. Al+3 and Zr+4 ions pin down the migration of dislocations during the cooling and create oxygen vacancies. Doping of the impurities would improve the electronic and optical properties of rutile. The elastic properties might be changed for doping of the impurities in the rutile crystals.

AbstractHomogeneous Sb-doped single crystals of Ge–Si solid solutions are grown with a silicon content of 0.2 to 0.8 at %. The optical absorption of single crystals with a resistivity of (2–3) Ω cm is studied by IR Fourier spectroscopy at a wavelength of 10.6 μm in the temperature range from 25 to 60°C. It is found that the introduction of silicon into antimony-doped germanium improves the temperature stability of the optical properties of the crystals.

Aim: To study the temperature stability of TGS doped with ZnSO4, CdCl2, BaCl2, and compare it with that of pure TGS. Objectives: Synthesizing pure and doped TGS and studying their temperature dependence using TGA, DTA, and DSC analysis. Methods: Slow cooling solution growth was used to grow single crystals of pure and doped TGS. The TGA, DTA and DSC analysis was conducted for determining the temperature stability. Results: The thermal analysis of pure and doped TGS shows that the doped samples show a similar dependence on temperature as pure TGS. The temperature of decomposition of pure and doped samples (BTGS, ZTGS, CdTGS) was 226.60°C, 228.38°C, 229.13°C, and 239.13°C respectively. The melting onset of these samples was 214.51°C, 216.04°C, 217.69°C and 216.04°C respectively. Conclusion: The study shows that doping TGS with the above three described materials did not alter their temperature stability considerably. It is a good result as doping TGS, for varying its characteristics like absorbance, reflectance, bandgap energy, etc., which did not alter its temperature stability. Therefore, TGS doped with the above three dopants can be used at the same temperature ranges as of pure TGS but with much-improved efficiency.
