The role of soil invertebrates in the cycle of substances, soil-forming processes and the provision of ecosystem services is undeniable. Therefore, soil invertebrates are valuable in bioindication studies. Comprehensive research of soil invertebrates in the production area of Mondi Syktyvkar JSC as the largest pulp and paper enterprise in the European part of Russia was initiated in 2003. A huge amount of data about composition, abundance and structure of soil macro- and mesofauna along an impact gradient was accumulated during the period from 2003 to 2019 years. These data can be used to study local biodiversity, monitor the state of soil invertebrate communities and assess the impact of the pulp and paper industry on the environment. Datasets here presented include information from a monitoring programme for soil invertebrates that inhabit coniferous forests in the production area of Mondi Syktyvkar JSC (Komi Republic). The assemblages' structure of macrofauna, collembolans and nematodes are described. Information on the number of individuals of springtail species, nematodes genera and macrofauna taxa is given. A total of 11146 sampling events of macrofauna, 6673 sampling events of Collembola, and 2592 sampling events of Nematoda are recorded along a gradient of air pollution from pulp and paper industry emissions.

Lignin is a complex natural polymer and by-product of the pulp and paper industry. Currently, the increasing interest in bio-based products has motivated the search for alternative renewable feedstocks that can sustainably replace synthetic polymers. Because of the phenolic functionalities of lignin, this natural polymer has attracted interest for application in biomaterials. Among various products, polymeric foams stand out as a potential product in which lignin incorporation has resulted in improved mechanical and thermal properties. This paper reviews the state of lignin foam development, with emphasis placed on phenol-lignin types.

The objective of this work was to analyze the prospects for the next five years in relation to planted area, forest production, investment intention and hiring of employees. The research had as its area of coverage the state of Paraná and as a source of data, companies (legal entities) producers of forest raw material of planted origin that operate in the state. The contacts with the companies were obtained from the Paraná Association of Forest Based Companies (APRE), the Organization of Cooperatives of the State of Paraná (OCEPAR), SINPACEL and ABIMCI. The questionnaires were sent by e-mail to the entire contact base, aiming at the census. Thus, the resulting sample is made up of 41 companies, segmented between integrated and non-integrated companies, which corresponds to 17 and 24 companies. The evaluation answers were carried out. For the identification of the companies’ prospects, it was requested to fill in a table indicating a percentage (0 to 100%) that reflects the projections for the next 5 years. The prospects related to the planted area, production and investments were positive, however, the panoramas related to hiring new employees by the pulp and paper industry (integrated companies) presents a prospect of reduction. The Timos are the group that has the most positive expectations, being responsible for the expansion of the planted area, volume produced, investment and hiring of employees.

Agricultural residues and energy crops are promising resources that can be utilized in the pulp and paper industry. This study examines the potential of co-cooking nonwood materials with hardwoods as means to incorporate nonwood material into a paper furnish. Specifically, miscanthus, switchgrass, and corn stover were substituted for poplar hardwood chips in the amounts of 10 wt %, 20 wt %, and 30 wt %, and the blends were subjected to kraft pulping experiments. The pulps were then bleached with an OD(EP)D sequence and then refined and formed into handsheets to characterize their physical properties. Surprisingly, all three co-cooked pulps showed improved strength properties (up to 35%). Sugar measurement of the pulps by high-performance liquid chromatography suggested that the strength increase correlated with enriched xylan content.
