The possibility of resorption of a guest molecule (G) or its substitution by other compounds is not known for M(NH3)2N(CN)4.2G (G = C6H6) or M(en)mM'(CN)4.nG clathrates, or even for the parent M(NH3)mM'(CN)4.nH2O, MM'(CN4).nH2O tetracyano complexes. These, however, are capable of sorption, and their lattice space can be reversibly or irreversibly filled with a suitable organic compound if the clathrates or tetracyano complexes in the hydrated form are allowed to be in contact with organic substances whose size and polarity fit the tetracyano complex lattice. The space within the lattice, however, develops as early as their formation from solution or suspension in the presence of the compound G (presence of water is actually sufficient).

The distribution and fate of pollutants in biological wastewater treatment is highly influenced by sorption processes. Biofilms can provide a sink for dissolved matter with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), cell walls, cell membranes, and cytoplasm serving as sorption sites. These sites display different sorption properties, preferences, and capacities. The distribution of organic pollutants such as BTX or heavy metals such as cadmium and zinc in biofilms could be investigated by fractionating the biomass. Therefore, an EPS extraction method with a crown ether was used which allowed the detection of organic and inorganic substances in the different fractions. After extraction, more than 60% of BTX could be localized in the EPS In contrast to organic substances, more than 80% of the total content of cadmium and zinc was found in the cellular fraction.

It was found after study of modifications of tetracyano complexes with 1,4-dioxane that a similar product is formed also by direct addition of 1,4-dioxane to a solution of [Ni(NH3)m][Ni(CN)4] or to solid NiNi(CN)4.nH2O; and 1,4-dioxane is initially bonded as a guest molecule and then as a ligand. The amount of guest component or ligand in the compounds Ni(NH3)m(C4H8O2)aNi(CN)4.(y-a)C4H8O2.nH2O and Ni(C4H8O2)aNi(CN)4.(n-a)C4H8O2 depends on the preparation conditions and on the conditions of storage of the solid product after isolation. The results of TA, IR, and GC analysis confirmed the presence of 1,4-dioxane bonded as a guest component and also 1,4-dioxane entering the host structure as a ligand.

Sick house syndrome caused by volatile organic compound (VOC) in the room is a serious problem in Japan. A photocatalytic wall paper was developed which is a wall paper coated with a visible light type of photocatalyst. When irradiated by light, the photocatalyst generates strong oxidative potential and decomposes almost all organic substances to water, carbon dioxide, and others. As a result of our experiment using the photocatalytic wall paper, toluene and acetaldehyde were decomposed efficiently even under a fluorescent lamp, and the photocatalytic wall paper had also strong anti-bacterial effect under the fluorescent lamp.

The spin crossover (SCO) between multi-stable states in transition metal material is one of the attractive molecular switching phenomena which is responsive to various external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, light, electromagnetic field, radiation, nuclear decay, soft-X-ray, guest molecule inclusion, chemical environments and so forth [...]
