Rectal foreign bodies are not uncommon and often pose a serious challenge to surgeons. In majority, the objects are inserted by self in children, psychiatric patients and for sexual gratification in adults. Various rectal foreign bodies have been reported. Deodorant aerosol spray can in the rectum has not been reported previously. Danger of aerosol dispenser can is the risk of fire and explosion. Especially during any surgical procedures to remove the foreign body using cautery or any energy devices. We report of a rare foreign body of deodorant aerosol spray can in the rectum in a young male patient, which was removed under general anaesthesia.

The purposes of insertion and types of foreign bodies in rectum show great variation. Rectal foreign bodies need to be removed without giving damage to intestinal wall and this should be done in the easiest possible way. We have reported a new and a simple technique. It is easy to apply and safe. A patient was admitted to our clinic with a rectal foreign body (radish) which was successfully removed by cutting it into small pieces. We conclude that different kinds of rectal foreign bodies, especially fruit and vegetables, can be removed by this technique.

Though anorectal foreign body cases are rare, they have become increasingly frequent in recent years. Although entrapped foreign bodies are most often related to sexual behavior, they can also result from ingestion or sexual assault. The diagnosis may be made by rectal examination and metallic objects can be confirmed by plain abdominal radiographs. Transanal removal is only possible for very low-lying objects, while patients with high-lying foreign bodies usually require an operative intervention. An early decision of laparotomy should only be made after subjecting the patient to suitable investigations to determine exact location of the object, in order to avoid any inadvertent damage to the adjoining vasculature as well as anal incontinence. . We report the case of a young male who presented at surgery department of Shaheed Suhrawardy medical college hospital with severe rectal pain due to insertion of an apple into rectum by some eunuchs. It was successfully removed transanally under spinal anesthesia. Post operative period was uneventful and referred for psychiatric consultation.J Shaheed Suhrawardy Med Coll, June 2017, Vol.9(1); 35-37

The presence of an embedded foreign body in the oral and maxillofacial region is not unusual, but the impaction of a foreign body with vegetative nature is rare. Prompt diagnosis and surgical removal of these foreign bodies will minimize their associated complications. This case report presents a patient with recurrent submandibular abscess and persistent facial cutaneous sinus tract caused by a retained blade of grass inside the facial soft tissue. The fact that the plain radiograph misdiagnosed the presence of a foreign body meant that the pathology persisted for about three months, and the patient underwent hospitalization, surgical procedures, and antibiotic regimens; however all of these failed until the foreign body was detected and removed.Conclusion. To avoid misdiagnosis of foreign body presence in the orofacial region, notably suspected foreign bodies with low radiopacity, the clinician must perform careful clinical examination and use the ultrasonography. Also, in the uncertain cases where the pathology persists, despite having undertaken surgical procedures and antibiotic regimens, the clinician should pay more attention to the patient’s history which may suggest the presence of the foreign body.

Ingestion of foreign bodies is common primarily in children, psychiatric patients, alcoholics and elderly people who use dentures. Selivanov et al. reported that, in most cases of foreign body ingestion, the most common foreign bodies ingested were coins, bones, food debris, safety pins and razor blades. Rarity, technical difficulty in removing the foreign body, complications associated with the delay in diagnosis and treatment, migration of the foreign body extraluminally, site, shape and position of the sharp end of a safety pin makes this case interesting and worth reporting. We are reporting a case of a one year child presenting to us with accidental ingestion of a safety pin. The case was difficult because the protected end of the safety pin was broken which made both the ends of the foreign body sharp. Also, the ends of safety pin were wide apart and pointing upwards.

Abstract Foreign body ingestion is a common condition in clinical practice, thankfully most of the cases do not require any surgery as most foreign bodies can pass through the bowel without injuring it. Treatment depends on the size and kind of foreign bodies. When complications arise, patients may require urgent medical attention. Self-harm by sharp foreign body ingestion is a rare event that must always be promptly treated and should always be prevented. Psychiatric patients and inmates are the most affected population. A high index of suspicion is required to treat this rare condition, which may be preventable if there is adequate mental and medical therapy along with close monitoring and family support. We present the case of a 31-year-old psychiatric patient. After prompt treatment, two razor blades were surgically removed from her intestines. She fully recovered and is doing well on follow-up controls.

Foreign bodies in the knee joint are uncommon, particularly those not related to surgical procedures. In this paper, we present a case of an intraosseous metallic foreign body situated in the medial femoral condyle for one year, causing pain, which was removed with complete resolution of the symptoms.

Background: Reported incidence of rectal foreign bodies is rather rare with only isolated published case reports or case series. Controlled studies of patients with rectal foreign bodies have not been conducted. The approach to the management of these patients has not changed in the last 10-20 years.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe 16 cases of colorectal foreign bodies introduced during sexual activity, gathered by the authors from 2002 to 2016, and to establish an epidemiological and therapeutic pattern.

Material and methods: This was a retrospective study that involved retrieval of folders belonging to patients who were treated for foreign body of rectum. The patients demographic data along with type of object (Foreign body), time of presentation and type of treatment required were recorded from the case folders.

Results: All the 16 patients in our series were male with a mean age of 42 years. Household bottles (37.8%) were the most common foreign body while a majority of patients presented between 24 to 48 hrs. Laparotomy was done in 8 cases (50%) out of which in 7 cases transanal extraction was done by milking while in 1 case colostomy was done. Manual extraction was successful in 25% while forceps were helpful in another 25%.

Conclusions: The incidence of rectal foreign bodies is disproportionately higher in men. Manual extraction with or without the help of obstetric forceps appears to be the treatment modality of choice. The appropriate technique will depend on the size and surface of the retained object and the presence of complications.

Abstract Here we present the case of a 17-year-old male patient, affected by Asperger syndrome, who reached the emergency division of our hospital after anal insertion of some stylus batteries. Transanal extraction of 30 stylus batteries avoided surgical intervention. Lockdown and boredom due to the strict domestic quarantine policies adopted during COVID-19 pandemic might have unmasked in our patient a susceptibility to unhealthy behaviour.
