THE AUTOECIOUS SPECIES OF PUCCINIA ON HELIANTHEAE IN NORTH AMERICA

Sixty-two taxa are recognized in this study of the species of Puccinia completing their life cycle on Heliantheae. Six new species are described: Puccinia guatemalensis Parmelee on Zexmenia spp. and Wedelia spp., P. ghiesbreghtii Parmelee on Wedelia ghiesbreghtii, P. abramsii Parmelee on Geraea viscida (= Encelia viscida), P. chloracae Parmelee on Viguiera spp., P. calanticariae Parmelee on Viguiera spp., and P. praetermissa Parmelee on Lagascea spp. Six new varieties are recognized: Puccinia electrae var. robusta Parmelee and P. electrae var. depressiporosa Parmelee on Zexmenia brevifolia, P. caleae var. cuernavacae Parmelee on Calea spp., P. cognata var. echinulata Parmelee on Verbesina spp., P. cognata var. fraseri Parmelee on Viguiera fraseri, and P. affinis var. triporosa Parmelee on Viguiera spp. Three taxa have been restored from synonomy under P. abrupta, viz. P. subglobosa, P. ximenesiae, and P. affinis, the last two parasitic on Verbesina spp., the first on Rhysolepis (= Viguiera). P. tithoniae, P. nanomitra, and P. ordinata, are reduced to synonomy with P. enceliae var. enceliae, P. iostephanes, and P. melampodii respectively. New combinations include: P. enceliae var. aemulans (Syd.) Parmelee and P. abrupta var. partheniicola (Jacks.) Parmelee. A key based on uredinial and telial characters, others based initially on the hosts, and a host index are provided. Each taxon is illustrated by a photomicrograph from type material. Distribution and host extensions, supplementary to those given in Arthur's Manual of the Rusts, are indicated.

In this second part of a study of the species of Puccinia completing their life cycle on Heliantheae ['Ambrosiaceae'], six species are recognized. Two new species are described: Puccinia caborcensis Parmelee is a brachy-form and P. sonorae Parmelee is a eu-form. Both occur on Ambrosia (= Franseria) in Mexico. P. franseriae Syd., previously considered synonymous with P. splendens Vize, is morphologically separable. The life cycle of P. helianthellae Arth., from the first part of this study, is described as an unstable brachy-form. The usefulness of these rusts as an aid in the taxonomy of the hosts is indicated, and a rust species – host table is included. Each rust is illustrated by a photomicrograph from type material.

The genus Mesophleps Hübner (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is revised; 54 available names (including one unjustifiedemendation), one junior primary homonym and one unavailable name were considered; type material of 44 previouslydescribed nominal species was examined. Nine new species are described: M. acutunca sp. nov., M. bifidella sp. nov., M.unguella sp. nov., M. gigantella sp. nov., M. coffeae sp. nov., M. parvella sp. nov., M. aspina sp. nov., M. truncatella sp.nov. and M. undulatella sp. nov. Echinus gyracanthus Eaton, 1832, was the first tentaculitid reported from North America, but the original description and illustration are vague by present-day standards. Study of the type material and topotypes from the Lower Devonian Manlius Limestone in the Town of Schoharie, New York, suggests that Tentaculites gyracanthus (Eaton) is a discrete species, but one with pronounced and remarkable intraspecific variability. Tentaculites simmondsi new species also occurs in the same unit and locality.

All macropterous species of Aptilotus Mik are keyed, with descriptions of two new macropterous North American species, Aptilotus pogophallus and A. nigriphallus. New distributional records are given for other North American species, and brachyptery is noted for the first time in A. luctuosus (Spuler). Four new macropterous species of Aptilotus (glabrifrons, spinistylus, rufiscapus, and binotatus are described from Nepal. The relationships between the North American and Nepalese species are discussed. Minocellina Papp is synonomized with Aptilotus, and the two species formerly in Minocellina, A. thaii (Papp) and A. besucheti (Papp), are thus given as new combinations. Limosina carbonicolor Richards, from Ethiopia, is redescribed and transferred to Aptilotus.

The generic limits of Arrhenia Fries, Geotus Pil. & Svr., Leptoglossum Karsten, Leptotus Karst., Mniopetalum Donk & Singer, Phaeotellus Kühn. & Lam., Pleuromycenula Singer, and Rimbachia Patouillard are examined. Two genera, Arrhenia and Rimbachia, are recognized. Keys for the species in these genera are presented and reports of the various species are reevaluated based largely on a restudy of original materials. New combinations in Arrhenia are based on Agaricus fissus Leysser, Merulius lobatus Pers., Helvella retiruga Bull., Leptoglossum alnetorum Singer, and Cantharellus spathulatus Fr. New species combinations in Rimbachia are based on Cyphella arachnoidea Peck, Agaricus bryophilus Pers., Cyphella muscicola var. neckerae Fr., Cantharellus furfuraceus Petch, and Pleuromycenula ellipsoidea Singer. Rimbachia paludosa sp. nov. is described from Ontario, Canada. Leptoglossum muscigenum (Bull.:Fr.) Karst. is a synonym of A.spathulata (Fr.) Redhead, Mniopetalum globisporum Donk & Singer is a synonym of R.arachnoidea (Peck) Redhead, Mniopetalum distinctum Horak is a synonym of R.furfuracea (Petch) Redhead, Leptoglossum candidum Reid is a synonym of R.neckerae (Fr.) Redhead, and Geotus glaucus sensu Pilát & Svrček 1954 is actually A.fissa (Leyss.) Redhead. Mniopetalum bisporum Singer is reduced to a subspecies of R. arachnoidea and Mniopetalum megalosporum Singer to a subspecies of R. neckerae (Fr.) Redhead. In North America, Arrhenia auriscalpium is an arctic–alpine species, A. lobata is an arctic–boreal–alpine species, and A. acerosa and A. retiruga are boreal species. Rimbachia arachnoidea and R. bryophila are boreal species. Arrhenia spathulata and A. fissa are known only from Europe. All Arrhenia and Rimbachia species are bryophiles. Cantharellus polycephalus Bres. is transferred to Pterygellus Corner and Leptoglossum bambusicola Corner is transferred to Marasmiellus Murrill. Pseudocraterellus leptoglossoides Corner is a basidiolichen and the type of a new genus, Semiomphalina Redhead. Pleuromycenula circularis Singer is transferred to Helotium Tode, and P. flava Singer is the type of a new genus, Flabellimycena Redhead. Campanella inquilina Romagnesi, based on Leptoglossum conchatum sensu Romagnesi non Velenovský, is described as new. Cantharellus prescotii Weinm., the correct name for Cantharellus albidus auct. non Fries, is transferred to Gerronema.

Three new species, Demicryptochironomus (Irmakia) retusus, Microchironomus brochus, and Parachironomus lobus are described and figured as males. Demicryptochironomus (Demicryptochironomus) asamaprimus Sasa et Hirabayashi, D. (D.) chuzequartus Sasa, D. (D.) ginzancedeus Sasa et Suzuki, D. (D.) uresicarinus Sasa, and Demicryptochironomus clarilatus (Guha et Chaudhuri) are re-examined based on type material. Cryptotendipes inawabeceus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, C. tamacutus Sasa and Parachironomus harunasecundus Sasa are transferred to Demicryptochironomus as new combinations. Parachironomus inageheus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki is placed as a junior synonym of Demicryptochironomus ginzancedeus Sasa et Suzuki. The relationships of some genera within the Harnischia complex are discussed. A key to the males of Demicryptochironomus is presented.

Exceptionally well preserved Lower Triassic conodonts from Oman include an array ofNeospathodusspecies, many of which are new. Those from the upper Lower Triassic, or Spathian, are described in conjunction with a restudy of conodont type material from Chios, Greece, and an assessment of contemporary collections from Pakistan and western North America. The taxonomic scope of three key species from Chios,Neospathodus homeri, N. triangularis, andN. gondolelloides, is revised. Seven new species are described from Oman:N. abruptus, N. brevissimus, N. brochus, N. crassatus, N. curtatus, N. pusillus, andN. symmetricus;and one new species,N. clinatus, is described from Pakistan. The alliedIcriospathodus collinsoniis also described from Oman. The occurrence and range ofNeospathodusspecies are presented in the context of the ammonoid succession in the Spathian of North America. BothN. homeriandN. triangularis, as revised, have shorter ranges and are more age diagnostic than previously thought.Neospathodus gondolelloidesis a distinct taxon, and not synonymous withChiosella timorensis.Five informal faunal divisions are identified based onNeospathodusand allied species. In ascending stratigraphic order, these are typified byIcriospathodus collinsoni, Neospathodus homeri, N. triangularis, N. symmetricus, andN. gondolelloides.Oman collections represent three of these faunas, which occur also in theColumbitesthroughProhungarites/Subcolumbitesammonoid beds of western U.S.A.

Species of Deiracephalus Resser, 1935, are rare elements in most Guzhangian (upper Marjuman) trilobite faunas of Laurentian North America, and are characterized by striking cephalic spinosity that includes very long genal and occipital or preoccipital glabellar spines. Almost all previous reports of the genus have assigned sclerites to two species, Deiracephalus aster (Walcott, 1916) and Deiracephalus unicornis Palmer, 1962. However, new material from the Shallow Bay Formation of western Newfoundland and restudy of type material from the southern Appalachians show that as many as eight species are present, although not all of them are sufficiently well known to be formally named. Deiracephalus aster and D. unicornis are restricted to their respective holotypes from the Conasauga Formation of Alabama; new species from the Shallow Bay Formation are Deiracephalus narwhali, Deiracephalus rhinocerotis, Deiracephalus dynastoides, and Deiracephalus phanaeus. Deiracephalus unicornis, D. narwhali, D. rhinocerotis, and a poorly known species from Nevada all possess preoccipital glabellar spines, and form an informal “unicornis group” of species. This group occurs high in the traditional Crepicephalus Zone (latest Guzhangian) and offers a potentially important means of biostratigraphic correlation. Species with occipital spines are older than the unicornis group and extend down into the Cedaria Zone as used traditionally in North America.

New portunoid fossils from southern Argentina and from the west coast of North America permit the reevaluation of the generic and family relationships within the Portunoidea Rafinesque, 1815. It has previously been suggested that the Portunidae and the Geryonidae Colosi, 1923, are closely related families (Manning and Holthuis, 1989). The new fossils suggest that the Geryonidae may in fact be derived from a portunid progenitor,ProterocarcinusFeldmann, Casadío, Chirino-Gálvez, and Aguirre Urreta, 1995, through a process of peramorphosis in which juveniles of the geryonid speciesChaceon peruvianus(d'Orbigny, 1842) resemble adults ofProterocarcinus latus(Glaessner, 1933). Examination of several genera within the portunid subfamily Polybiinae Ortmann, 1893, includingImaizumilaKarasawa, 1993;Megokkosnew genus;MinohellenusKarasawa, 1990;PororariaGlaessner, 1980;PortunitesBell, 1858; andProterocarcinus,suggests that the subfamily had an amphitropical distribution early in its history. New taxa reported here includeMegokkosnew genus andPortunites nodosusnew species. New combinations includeChaceon peruvianus(d'Orbigny, 1842),Imaizumila araucana(Philippi, 1887),Megokkos alaskensis(Rathbun, 1926),Megokkos hexagonalis(Nagao, 1932),Megokkos macrospinus(Schweitzer, Feldmann, Tucker, and Berglund, 2000),Minohellenus triangulum(Rathbun, 1926), andProterocarcinus latus(Glaessner, 1933).

Morphological characters of adults of the treehopper subfamily Nicomiinae Haupt, 1929 (Hemiptera, Membracidae) including seven genera (Eudonica gen. nov.; Euwalkeria Goding, 1926; Holdgatiella Evans, 1962; Nicomia Stål, 1858; Nodonica Dietrich, McKamey& Deitz, 2001; Stalomia gen. nov.; and Tolania Stål, 1858) and 22 species (16 new) are described and illustrated. Keys are provided for genera and for species of Euwalkeria, Holdgatiella, and Nicomia. Nomenclatural changes, based on study of the primary type material of 15 species, include three new combinations, one new synonymy, and reinstatement of one junior synonym. Eudonica has one species, Eudonica nanella sp. nov.; Euwalkeria has five species, including four new species: E. colorata sp. nov., E. distincta sp. nov., E. perdita sp. nov., E. rubrica sp. nov.; Holdgatiella has two species, one of which is described as new: Holdgatiella chiloensis sp. nov.; Nicomia has twelve species, nine of which are described as new: N. buccina sp. nov., N. harenosa sp. nov., N. inscripta sp. nov., N. jucunda sp. nov., N. monticola sp. nov., N. nigrifasciata sp. nov., N. notidana sp. nov., N. pulchella sp. nov., N. serrata sp. nov.; Nodonica has one species, Nodonica bispinigera Dietrich, McKamey & Deitz; and Stalomia has one species, Stalomia veruta sp. nov. Tolania contains eleven previously described species and nearly 60 new species, which will be treated in a later publication. Three new combinations are proposed: one species described in Nicomia is placed in the tribe Abelini (Centrotinae) as Abelus retrospinosus (Lethierry) comb. nov.; one species previously placed in Nicomia is transferred to the genus Tolania as T. obliqua (Walker, 1858), comb. nov.; one species described in Holdgatiella is placed in the genus Tolania as T. stria (Cryan & Deitz, 2002), comb. nov. One new synonymy is proposed: Hoplophera [sic] cicadoides Walker, 1862, syn. nov., a junior synonym of Nicomia interrupta Stål, 1858. Nicomia subfasciata Stål, 1858, is reinstated. The results of a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology are presented, illustrating the hypothesized relationships among species and genera of Nicomiinae. The analysis supports the broader concept of Nicomiinae proposed here. The monophyly of this group is supported by eleven characters, and all of the included genera are also monophyletic.
