Bryophytes from the area drained by the Peel and Mackenzie rivers, Yukon and Northwest Territories, Canada

The distribution and general ecology of 263 bryophyte taxa are presented for an extensive area of coniferous forest, open fens, and alpine terrain along the Mackenzie River in the District of Mackenzie and the Peel River, a major tributary which extends into the Yukon. The continuous or discontinuous permafrost which underlies the area plays a major role in determining the vegetational communities that are present. Fire and disturbance by man initiate succession. Thirty-nine liverworts, 20 peat mosses, and 204 true mosses are reported. There are 43 new reports for the District of Mackenzie and 16 for the Yukon. Cynodontium glaucescens is new to North America. Brachythecium glaciale, B. mildeanum, and B. trachypodium are confirmed for North America. Of the taxa 94.7% are found in Europe and Asia as well as North America, 4.2% are known only from Asia and North America, whereas only 1.1% are restricted to North America. High mountains in the western part of the area, generally nonglaciated during the Wisconsinan, support a flora that contains many Arctic and Arctic–Alpine taxa.

The distribution and general ecology of 249 macrolichen taxa is described for 230 000 km2 of coniferous forest, open fens, and alpine terrain along the Mackenzie River in the District of Mackenzie, Northwest Territories, and the Peel River, a major tributary which rises in the Yukon Territory. Permafrost plays a major role in determining the plant communities that are present. Fire and man-made disturbances initiate succession. There are 45 new reports for the District of Mackenzie and 30 for the Yukon. Of the taxa, 86% are found in Europe, Asia, and North America, 9% are known from Asia and North America, whereas only 4% are restricted to North America. Pilophorus robustus is new to Canada. High mountains in the western part of the area, generally nonglaciated during the Wisconsinian, support a flora that contains many Arctic and Arctic–Alpine taxa. Amphi-Beringian species occur primarily in the north.

A sequel to earlier papers on bryophytes and macrolichens, this treatment describes the distribution and general ecology of 314 microlichen taxa for 230 000 km2 of coniferous forest, open fens, and alpine terrain along the Mackenzie River in the District of Mackenzie, Northwest Territories, and the Peel River, a major tributary which extends into the Yukon Territory. There are 103 new reports for the District of Mackenzie and 69 for the Yukon. Of the taxa, 87% are found in Europe and Asia as well as in North America, 1% are known only from Asia and North America; and 9% are restricted to North America. Staurothele sessilis Magn. is new to Canada, while Sagiolechia protuberans (Ach.) Mass., Staurothele hymenogonia (Nyl.) Th.Fr., and two lichen parasites, Didymosphaeria epicrassa (Oliv.) Vouax and Lahmia fuistingii Körb. are new to North America.Seven new combinations are made in Aspicilia: A. aliena (Zahlbr.) Thoms., A. anseris (Lynge) Thoms., A. elevata (Lynge) Thoms., A. perradiata (Nyl.) Thoms., A. ryrkaipiae (Magn.) Thoms., A. sorediza (Lynge) Thoms., and A. subplicigera (Magn.) Thoms.

Studies of the goldenrod gall caused by Eurosta solidaginis Fitch have been made by various authors who reared insects from the galls in North America, e.g. Hughes (1934), Milne (1940) and Ping (1915). Snyder (1898) described the emergence of an adult fly from a gall in Illinois. In Canada, insects have been reared from galls collected in Manitoba and the Northwest Territories by Brodie (1892), in Quebec by Fyles (1894) and in Ontario by Harrington (1895). An opportunity has been taken recently to examine specimens reared by Dr. G. Beall from galls collected at Chatham, Ontario in 1930 and to rear insects from galls in the vicinity of London, Ontario.

Plauditus cestus (Provonsha & McCafferty, 1982) is widespread in eastern and central North America. We provide new data from Virginia that fill a gap in the range of distribution and new data from the Northwest Territories that extend the range of the species by over 1900 km to the northwest. The Northwest Territories specimen represents a new larval color variant, with pronounced coloration of abdominal segment 6. We emphasize the need for additional sampling of aquatic habitats in the Far North.

<p>Wildfires occur regularly in the boreal forests of Northern Canada and an increasing frequency and intensity due to the global climate change is projected. A by-product of these forest fires is pyrogenic carbon (PyC) as a residue of incomplete combustion. The quantity and age of PyC in boreal forest soils, however, are largely unknown although boreal soils contribute to a large extent to the global soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. The Mackenzie River is a major export pathway for PyC between terrestrial and marine environments, with exported PyC ages on geological timescales. This indicates that soil may play an important role as an intermediate pool prior to the PyC export. We sampled eleven forest soils (with nine replicates) in the Canadian Taiga Plains and Shield within the Mackenzie River basin. Our sample sites were located in regions with soils under continuous permafrost in the Inuvik region (northern sites) and under sporadic and discontinuous permafrost in the South Slave Lake regions (southern sites). All sites were unaffected by fire for at least four decades. We used the hydrogen pyrolysis (HyPy) method to separate the PyC<sub>HyPy</sub> from the non-fire-derived SOC in the upper 0-15 cm to determine PyC<sub>HyPy</sub> stocks and performed radiocarbon dating upon both bulk soil and isolated PyC<sub>HyPy</sub>. The total SOC stocks were lower in the soil from the southern sites with on average 26 ± 20 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup> (10-153 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup>) compared to 57 ± 29 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup> (16-188 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup>) in the northern sites. The radiocarbon dating revealed much older PyC<sub>HyPy</sub> compared to the bulk soil SOC radiocarbon age, supporting the persistent nature of PyC and stabilization in soils. The PyC<sub>HyPy </sub>found in the soil of the southern sites, however, was much younger with ages in the range of 495-3 275 radiocarbon years BP than in the northern sites with ages on the range of 2 083-10 407 radiocarbon years BP. The larger SOC stocks and higher ages of PyC<sub>HyPy</sub> in the soils of the northern sites indicate the importance of permafrost conditions for the whole carbon cycle of boreal forests soils.</p>

A moderately rich fauna of graptolites, comprising species dominated by Monograptus (sensu stricto), Retiolites, Stomatograptus, and Cyrtograptus is documented from Prairie Creek, southern Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories. Graptolites of the upper Llandovery Monograptus turriculatus, Monograptus spiralis, and Cyrtograptus sakmaricus zones and of the Wenlock "unnamed zone" and Cyrtograptus rigidus and Monograptus testis – Cyrtograptus lundgreni zones are recognized. The species composition of these zones is significantly different from corresponding zones elsewhere in the Canadian Cordillera.Twenty-six species are described and illustrated, and of these, two are new: Stomatograptus canadensis and Cyrtograptus preclarus; and two species, Monograptus aff. riccartonensis and Cyrtograptus aff. sakmaricus might also be new. Several species, particularly Monograptus praecedens, Monograptus veles, and Monograptus cf. mutuliferus strigosus have not been prevously reported in North America.

A population of the amphiatlantic species Draba norvegica Gunn. was found in the Mackenzie District, Northwest Territories, nearly a thousand miles west of the nearest plants of this species in northeastern North America. Mackenzie District plants have the chromosome number n = 24.

A series of small road cuts of lower Boyle Formation (Middle Devonian: Givetian) near Waco, Kentucky, has produced numerous specimens of three blastozoan clades, including both “anachronistic” diploporan and rhombiferan “cystoids” and relatively advanced Granatocrinid blastoids. This unusual assemblage occurs within a basal grainstone unit of the Boyle Limestone, apparently recording a local shoal deposit. Diploporans, the most abundant articulated echinoderms, are represented by a new protocrinitid species, Tristomiocystis globosus n. gen. and sp. Glyptocystitoid rhombiferans are represented by isolated thecal plates assignable to Callocystitidae. Three species of blastoids, all previously undescribed, include numerous thecae of the schizoblastid Hydroblastus hendyi n. gen. and sp., the rare nucleocrinid Nucleocrinus bosei n. sp., and an enigmatic troosticrinid radial. The blastoid Nucleocrinus is typical for the age; however, the callocystitid, schizoblastid, and protocrinitid are not. Hydroblastus is the oldest known schizoblastid. Middle and Upper Devonian callocystitids have been previously reported only from Iowa and Michigan USA with unpublished reports from Missouri USA and the Northwest Territories, Canada. This occurrence is thus the first report of a Middle Devonian rhombiferan from the Appalachian foreland basin. Tristomiocystis is the first known protocrinitid in North America and the only protocrinitid younger than Late Ordovician. This occurrence thus represents a range extension of nearly 50 million years for protocrinids. This extraordinary sample of echinoderms in a Middle Devonian limestone from a well-studied area of North America highlights the incompleteness of the known fossil record, at least in fragile organisms such as echinoderms.
