Relative Egg Production and Abundance of Berried Lobsters, Homarus americanus, in the Bay of Fundy and off Southwestern Nova Scotia

The relative abundance of berried female lobsters, Homarus americanus, and their contribution to total egg production in various areas of the Bay of Fundy and off southwestern Nova Scotia are estimated from sampling commercial and research cruise catches from traps. Concentrations of berried females occurred on Browns Bank, Georges Bank, and the New Brunswick side of the Bay of Fundy. To a lesser extent, berried females occurred in the coastal areas of southwestern Nova Scotia. Using a range of mortality values, a variety of population sizes were estimated from 1983 landings from which relative egg production values were calculated for each area. Lobsters from coastal waters of southwestern Nova Scotia combined with the Bay of Fundy were estimated to produce between 23 and 53% and those from the offshore Brown and eastern Georges Banks to produce between 47 and 77% of the region's total egg production. The results suggest that lobsters in each area are capable of producing large numbers of eggs. Where the resulting planktonic larvae settle as benthic juveniles is unclear.

A major portion of the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine has been surveyed for occurrence and distribution of herring larvae. Plankton samples obtained with Hardy continuous plankton recorders and plankton nets confirm major spawning areas off the southwest coast of Nova Scotia and on the northern edge of Georges Bank. Newly hatched larvae were found in abundance in these areas, but nowhere else. Drift of larvae as indicated by non-tidal surface currents suggests that Nova Scotia spawnings may contribute substantially to commercial stocks of herring in inshore areas of Maine and New Brunswick. It is possible that Georges Bank spawnings also supply herring to this region.

New information on female size at maturity, fecundity, and relative egg production per recruit is presented for American lobsters (Homarus americanus) from three areas in the Canadian Maritimes. Based on pleopod examination, sizes at 50% maturity for females were estimated at 108.1 mm carapace length (CL) from the Fundy area (Bay of Fundy and southwestern Nova Scotia), at 92.5 mm CL from eastern Nova Scotia, and at 78.5 mm CL from Northumberland Strait. There was a curvilinear relationship between the number of eggs per female and CL. An egg-per-recruit model predicted that in all three areas the second and third molt groups beyond the legal minimum recruit size contribute the most to egg production under current exploitation rates. Lobsters in Northumberland Strait and eastern Nova Scotia produce up to 30–50% of their eggs at sizes smaller than those at which females from the Bay of Fundy start to produce eggs. Although the stock–recruitment relationships for H. americanus are unknown, the egg-per-recruit assessment suggests that all three areas would benefit in egg production increases by increasing minimum legal recruit size by one molt increment.

Crustacean and rotifer plankton assemblages of 93 lakes in Labrador, 107 in Newfoundland, and 142 in New Brunswick – Nova Scotia were investigated for evidence of correlations with lake morphometric, chemical, or biological factors. Labrador assemblages were almost completely lacking in identifiable structure. Newfoundland species clustered into two groups of different body size, suggesting the influence of fish predation. Only one species in Labrador and Newfoundland was significantly correlated with a derived factor related to lake water buffering capacity. New Brunswick – Nova Scotia species clustered into two groups, one featuring significant positive and the other significant negative correlations with the buffering factor. From this we conclude that acidification is having an impact on the limnetic zooplankton of these two provinces. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to demonstrate that New Brunswick – Nova Scotia lakes differing in their buffering capacity were also distinct in zooplankton composition. Lakes with low factor scores (low pH, alkalinity, and calcium) were mainly located in the Bay of Fundy region; this area has above average fog and precipitation, and lies within the summer air flow carrying pollutants from the south.

This checklist of the oribatid fauna of Canada and Alaska (excluding Astigmata) includes 580 identified species in 249 genera and 96 families. The known fauna of Canada includes 556 identified species in 247 genera, and that of Alaska includes 182 species in 95 genera; 39 of the 42 oribatid superfamilies are represented. We further list ~ 300 species that are currently unidentified, and possibly undescribed. In addition, we list 42 genera that are represented only by unidentified and probably undescribed species. For each species we give combinations and synonymies, specific locations in Alaska and the Provinces and Territories of Canada, habitats, and biogeography.                There are 182 identified species known for Alaska, 152 for Yukon, 122 for Northwest Territories, 58 for Nunavut; 210 for British Columbia, 213 for Alberta, 15 for Saskatchewan, 84 for Manitoba, 167 for Ontario, 210 for Québec, 110 for Nova Scotia, 77 for New Brunswick, 84 for Newfoundland and 6 for Prince Edward Island. The known fauna of Canada is smaller than that of Austria, and is approximately equivalent to that of the Czech Republic. As these countries are much smaller in size than Canada and less ecologically diverse, we consider the Canadian and Alaskan fauna are at most 25% known. The paucity of these data reflects the absence of taxonomic and faunistic studies on Oribatida in State, Provinces or Territories, and especially in the Canadian and Alaskan National Park systems and the hundreds of Provincial Parks.                Despite the almost 90% increase in described species since the catalogue of Marshall et al. (1987), there is a need for focussed, coordinated research on Oribatida in the natural regions throughout Canada and Alaska, and for monographs on families and genera with large numbers of undescribed species, such as Brachychthoniidae, Damaeidae, Cepheidae, Liacaridae, Oppiidae, Suctobelbidae, Hydrozetidae, Phenopelopidae, Scheloribatidae, Haplozetidae and Galumnidae.
