Males and ephippial females of Dadaya macrops (Daday), a widely distributed tropical cladoceran, are described for the first time together with hitherto unrecorded morphological features of the parthenogenetic female. The postabdomen of the male is unique among chydorids in having only a vestige of the terminal claw. This confirms the validity of this monotypic genus. The material studied comes from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), taken in the neighbourhood of the type locality. Our description provides a detailed morphological record of a population containing all instars of males and females, and both parthenogenetic and ephippial adult females. Type material of parthenogenetic females, the only forms hitherto known, agrees closely with our material. An analysis of the population structure is given.

We describe Simulium guaporense Py-Daniel adults and redescribe some morphological characters of its larvae and pupae based on specimens collected near the type locality in Rondônia State, Brazil. We report this species for the first time in Mato Grosso State. This species was placed originally in the S. siolii species group of the subgenus Psaroniocompsa; however, the thoracic pattern of the adults of S. guaporense is similar to that of species in the S. auristriatum species group. The immature stages were found on deciduous leaves and trailing vegetation in sandy-bottomed streams. Females were collected biting humans.

The South American monotypic genus Notobothrus Parent (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), previously known only from its type locality in lowland Amazonian Peru, is newly recorded from the northwestern Brazilian Acre State. The single included species, N. longilamellatus Parent, is redescribed in detail, including the associated female for the first time. The genus is excluded from the subfamily Peloropeodinae and provisionally left incertae sedis within the Dolichopodidae. Key words: Taxonomy, Neotropical, Brazil, Neurigoninae, Peloropeodinae

Acropsis Grant, 1958 is a monotypic genus with records only for Peru (type locality). Acropsis is being redescribed, including the Acropsis tectiformis species and two new species: Acropsis solimoesensis sp. nov. and Acropsis julianae sp. nov. The male internal genitalia and the stridulatory file morphology for the genus is being described for the first time. Furthermore, the genus is registered for the first time for Colombia (Caquetá) and Brazil (Acre and Amazonas) and additionally notes on the habitat are made.

Amendment of the description of males and females of Cephalobus persegnis includes variation in the form of the probolae, reproductive system, and tail, and in the number and position of the lateral papillae on the male tail. Size and shape of the dorsal and subventral rectal glands also differed within and between sexes. Form of the probolae of topotypes and their progeny reared on agar and in sand ranged from low-rounded, when amalgamated with the duplex lips, to asymmetrically bifurcate. Sometimes probolae became conoid in shape, ending in a single point. Significance of the presence or absence and the form of labial probolae in taxonomy of Cephalobus and in its relationships to the Acrobelinae, particularly Chiloplacus Thorne, 1937 and Paracephalobus Akhtar, 1962, is discussed. Chiloplacus trilineatus Steiner, 1940 is synonymized with C. persegnis. Chiloplacus quinilineatus Shavrov, 1968 is transferred to Cephalobus. Configuration of the ovary in adult females is not considered to be of taxonomic significance. The ovary is not always flexed, and, when flexed, the number of flexures varies from one to six. The neotype of C. persegnis was selected from specimens collected from the type locality.

Anicius Chamberlin, 1925 is a monotypic genus and only the male of A. dolius Chamberlin, 1925 has been described. Herein the genus is revised and the female of the type species is described for the first time; new distribution records are also provided for this species. Five new species from Mexico are described based on males and females: Anicius chiapanecus sp. nov., Anicius cielito sp. nov., Anicius faunus sp. nov., Anicius grisae sp. nov., and Anicius maddisoni sp. nov. A key for identification of males and females is given, as well as a map with distribution records of the six species.

Two species of Neocypholaelaps Vitzthum are reported from Sri Lanka. One of them, Neocypholaelaps ceylonicus Narita & Moraes, n. sp., is described based on adult females. The other, Neocypholaelaps ampullula (Berlese), originally described from Indonesia, is reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. Complementary morphological information about this species is provided based on the specimens collected in this study. A discussion is presented about the spermathecal apparatus of Neocypholaelaps species.

A comprehensive taxonomic treatment of the wax scales in Australia is presented. Seven species are included; of these, six [Ceroplastes ceriferus (Fabricius), C. destructor Newstead, C. floridensis Comstock, C. insulanus De Lotto, C. rubens Maskell, C. sinensis Del Guercio] were known in Australia previously, and one [Vinsonia stellifera (Westwood)] is recorded from Australia for the first time. The adult females of C. destructor, C. insulanus and C. sinensis, and the immature stages of males and females of C. sinensis are described and illustrated. Keys to the adult females of the seven species known in Australia and to both sexes and different stages of C. sinensis are provided.

A new species of predaceous midge, Austrosphaeromias setosa sp. nov., is described and illustrated from adult males and females collected in the Patagonian-Andean region of Argentina and Chile. Based on examination of the type species of Austrosphaeromias Spinelli, 1997 and recently collected specimens from near the type-locality, the female and previously unknown male of Austrosphaeromias chilensis (Ingram & Macfie, 1931) are also described and illustrated. Descriptions are accompanied by color photographs and illustrations of key features of females and males of both species. We also provide a key to adult females and males of the four species of Austrosphaeromias.

The rare and endangered Cameroonian potamonautid freshwater crab, Louisea balssi (Bott, 1959), was recently rediscovered after not having been seen for the last 109 years and presumed extinct. The new specimens of L. balssi were collected from the Southwest Region of Cameroon, about 80 km from the type locality, and include the first adult male to be recorded for this species. A redescription of L. balssi, which includes for the first time the adult characters of the male gonopods and chelipeds, is provided. New data on the habitat, population structure, and distribution of this species are also provided. Threats to the species and the implications to its conservation are discussed.
