AbstractObserving light or heavy charged Higgs bosons $$H^\pm $$ H ± , lighter or heavier than the top quark, would be instant evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. For this reason, in recent years searches for charged Higgs bosons have been in the center of attention of current colliders such as the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In spite of all efforts, no signal has been yet observed. Especially, the results of CMS and ATLAS experiments have excluded a large region in the MSSM $$m_{H^+}-\tan \beta $$ m H + - tan β parameter space for $$m_{H^+}=80{-}160$$ m H + = 80 - 160  GeV corresponding to the entire range of $$\tan \beta $$ tan β up to 60. Therefore, it seems that one should concentrate on probing heavy charged Higgs bosons ($$m_{H^\pm }>m_t$$ m H ± > m t ) so in this context each new probing channel is welcomed. In this work, we intend to present our proposed channel to search for heavy charged Higgses through the study of scaled-energy distribution of bottom-flavored mesons (B) inclusively produced in charged Higgs decay, i.e., $$H^+\rightarrow t\bar{b}\rightarrow B+X$$ H + → t b ¯ → B + X . Our study is carried out within the framework of the generic two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) using the massless scheme where the zero mass parton approximation is adopted for bottom quark.

I suggest a two-Higgs-doublet model in which CP violation is mediated only by the neutral Higgs bosons, via the mechanism of scalar-pseudoscalar mixing. In this model there is no CP violation in the exchange of either W bosons or charged Higgs bosons. The model has only two basic CP-violating quantities. I remark that other models of this kind, but with more than two Higgs doublets, may also be built.

We study the implications of a criterion of naturalness for a simple two Higgs doublet model in the context of the discovery of a Higgs-like particle with a mass at 125 GeV. This condition which measures the amount of fine-tuning further limits the parameter space of this particular model and together with other phenomenological constraints lead to an allowed range of masses for the other neutral or charged Higgs bosons: H, a±, a0.

Electroweak baryogenesis in a two-Higgs doublet model is a well-motivated and testable scenario for physics beyond the Standard Model. An attractive way of providing CP violation is through flavor-changing Higgs couplings, where the top-charm coupling is hardly constrained. This minimal scenario can be tested by searching for heavy charged and neutral Higgs bosons at the LHC. While the charged Higgs signature requires a dedicated analysis, the neutral Higgs signature will be covered by a general search for same-sign top pairs. Together, they provide a conclusive test of this kind of baryogenesis.

Although absent at the tree level in models with only doublet and singlet Higgs representations, the WZH coupling can be induced at the one-loop level. We examine the size of this induced coupling in the two Higgs doublet model due to fermion as well as Higgs/gauge boson loops. Such couplings could provide a new mechanism for charged Higgs production at colliders and are ‘backgrounds’ to new physics beyond the Standard Model. We find, however, that these couplings are very weak for all regions of the parameter space explored.

We study the production of a heavy charged Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in [Formula: see text] within a 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). The chiral structure of the [Formula: see text] coupling can trigger a particular spin state of the top quark produced in the decay of a charged Higgs boson and, therefore, is sensitive to the underlying mechanism of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB). Taking two benchmark models (2HDM type-I and 2HDM type-Y) as an example, we show that inclusive rates, differential distributions and forward–backward asymmetries of the top quark’s decay products can be used to search for heavy charged Higgs bosons and also as model discriminators.

We examine the possibility of finding charged Higgs bosons (H±) at the SSC. The charged Higgs boson is produced with a top quark via a gluon+bottom quark interaction (g+b→H+t). For the two Higgs doublet models, H± decays predominantly into t+b. Since the background from QCD processes will be very severe for this decay mode, we studied the H±→τ+ν decay mode. Even for this mode, background from the processes pp→W+t+spectators→ℓ+νℓ+t+spectators will be very high. In the two Higgs doublet models, it is very difficult to extract the charged Higgs signal for reasonable values of the ratio of the two vacuum expectation values ( tan β=v1/v2).

Concentrating on the impact of the very recent top quark discovery, we perform a combined analysis of two strongest constraints on the two-Higgs doublet model, one coming from the recent measurement by CLEO on the inclusive branching ratio of b→sγ decay and the other from the recent LEP data on [Formula: see text] decay. We have included the model predictions for one-loop vertex corrections to [Formula: see text] through εb. We find that the εb constraint excludes most of the less appealing window: tan β≲1 at 95% C.L. for the measured top mass mt=176±8±10 GeV from CDF. Moreover, it excludes tan β≲2 at 95% C.L. for mt≳176 GeV; combined with the b→sγ constraint, only very heavy charged Higgs (≳670 GeV) is allowed by the measured mt from CDF.

The D0 experiment has reported a direct search for a charged Higgs boson produced by [Formula: see text] annihilation and decaying to [Formula: see text] final state, in the 180≤MH+≤300 GeV mass range. The analysis has led to upper limits on the production cross-section in the framework of the two-Higgs doublet model types I, II and III. We compare the predictions of two different scenarios in the framework of the two-Higgs doublet type III to the cross-section limits reported by D0 collaboration, and we obtain constraints on the charged Higgs mass, for the case when the charged Higgs mass is bigger than the top quark mass. Also, searches for the charged Higgs boson with a mass smaller than top quark mass are considered, we discuss the possible limits on the charged Higgs boson mass obtained from measurements of the ratio [Formula: see text] within the two-Higgs doublet model type III.
