Abstract In this paper a systematic way of representing complex cable-pulley mechanism configurations and a method to analyze and synthesize the motion of these cable-pulley devices is presented. The cable-pulley system model that is being considered is composed of three basic elements which are pulleys, blocks, and cables. A configuration table is used to identify the constraint equations by systematically defining the connections between the cables, pulleys, and blocks. The basic strategy is to use the constraint equations to generate the relationship between each variable and a subset of the variables identified as the inputs. The number of input variables is equal to the total number of variables minus the number of independent constraints. This choosing of the set of inputs is done in conjunction with a row reduction process on the system of constraint equations which identifies the number of inputs and ultimately generates the relationships of each variable to the input(s). Examples are given to illustrate the procedure.

Exposure of many vertebrate cells to solutions more dilute or concentrated than the physiological "norm" results in an initial increase or decrease in cell volume followed by a recovery of volume toward a normal value. Although the basic strategy for volume regulation is the same for cell types studied, the mechanism by which the cell regulates ion channels appears to be tissue dependent.

Cattell's basic strategy in personality research has been first to establish personality factors for each of three major types of measurement, rating (Life-Record), questionnaire (Self-Rating), and objective tests, then to compare factors from one realm with factors from another (7). A factor in any one realm is established in the first place by being replicated. As Cattell says (4, p. 291): “… a functionally unitary trait or process should nevertheless not be considered established by a pattern in a single factor analytic research, but must reappear consistently and persistently in independently rotated studies.”

A great deal of research on the psychology of gambling has been conducted that has looked at non-experienced gamblers in laboratory or classroom settings. Yet there has been comparatively little research examining the practices and beliefs of actual gamblers within their natural gambling context. The current research contributes to the naturalistic study of casino gamblers. It reports the results of 10 weeks of ethnographic participant observation conducted in 1999 in two Indiana riverboat casinos located about 1/2 hour from Chicago. The research examines blackjack players' strategies for and beliefs about winning as explained and understood by the gamblers themselves. It uses blackjack's basic strategy and card counting as organizing principles around which to discuss and assess these strategies and beliefs.

Significance The claim that it is a miniaturised hydrogen bomb is less plausible. Impacts Scheduling nuclear tests now seems to be less about tactical timing than about maximising the speed of progress. UN and bilateral sanctions will tighten at the margins, but this will not be a game-changer. China will seek new ways to hurt Pyongyang, but will not change its basic strategy of propping up the regime.

The Tokai Vitrification Facility (TVF) is the only operating vitrification plant in Japan, constructed and operated by JAEA, to vitrify concentrated high radioactive liquid waste (HALW) in the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP). JAEA started TVF hot operation in 1995 and produced 218 canisters as of March, 2006. An existing melter is the second melter, which was installed from 2002 to 2004 in place of the first melter stopped its operation by damage of a main electrode. JAEA has estimated that the damage was caused by accumulation of noble metal. Therefore, melter bottom structure was improved to get better drain ability of glass containing noble metal. Completing the melter replacement, vitrification operation was restarted in October 2004 and produced 88 canisters successfully until the end of March 2006. Through these experiences, JAEA made basic strategy to achieve stable TVF operation: keeping stable operation of the existing melter preventing adverse effect by noble metal accumulation and developing a new advanced melter with long lifetime preparing for future exchange as the third melter. Based on the basic strategy, JAEA made a decade development plan of necessary key technologies and has started the development since 2005.
