The optical properties of nanoscopic arrays of metal particles are dominated by plasmon resonances and electromagnetic interaction between the particles. We use electron-beam lithography to prepare arrays of noncentrosymmetric gold particles and study their linear and second-order nonlinear optical properties. By varying the orientation of the particles in a fixed lattice, we observe shifts in the polarized linear extinction spectra. The second-harmonic generation efficiencies of the two types of samples differ by up to 60%. The results show that the properties of the samples are sensitive to the smallest details of their structure.

ABSTRACTThe synthesis and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a new family of optically nonlinear coumarin dye-containing polymers is reported. Polymerizable coumaromethacrylate (CMA) monomers having various alkyl spacers (C2 to C5) between the polymerizable group and the chromophore were prepared and copolymerized with methylmethacrylate (MMA) and other vinyl monomers. The CMA copolymers had high chromophoric content (up to 18 × 1020) and glass transitions as high as 132°C. Spin cast films were prepared on BK7 substrates and oriented by corona-onset poling at elevated temperatures (COPET). The poled CMA copolymer films were characterized for spectroscopic absorption and second harmonic properties. A comparison of the nonlinear optical properties of poled CMA-MMA copolymers to poled guest-host systems is made. Relative to guest/host systems, CMA-MMA copolymer films exhibit larger and much more stable second-order nonlinear optical properties.

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of polystyrene particles coated with two well-characterized nonlinear optical chromophores with different molecular symmetry have been studied. From the markedly different depolarization ratio for the hyper-Rayleigh scattering from the molecular scatterers and from the largely different second-harmonic intensity from particles coated with these chromophores, we conjecture that contributions from antisymmetric molecular electronic states are necessary to observe second-order nonlinear effects from centrosymmetrical particles in isotropic solution.

Electric Field Induced Second-Harmonic (EFISH) Generation and Hyper Raleigh Scattering (HRS) measurements were performed on a representative series of axially substituted titanium(IV) and gallium(III) tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanines. The comparison of γEFISH and βHRS values within the series and in particular in the case of the dimeric species shows the influence of both the reduction of symmetry of the phthalocyanine ring and the intramolecular stacking on the second order nonlinear optical properties.
