We introduce a theory of geometry for nonnoetherian commutative algebras with finite Krull dimension. In particular, we establish new notions of normalization and height: depiction (a special noetherian overring) and geometric codimension. The resulting geometries are algebraic varieties with positive-dimensional points, and are thus inherently nonlocal. These notions also give rise to new equivalent characterizations of noetherianity that are primarily geometric. We then consider an application to quiver algebras whose simple modules of maximal dimension are one dimensional at each vertex. We show that the vertex corner rings of [Formula: see text] are all isomorphic if and only if [Formula: see text] is noetherian, if and only if the center [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] is noetherian, if and only if [Formula: see text] is a finitely generated [Formula: see text]-module. Furthermore, we show that [Formula: see text] is depicted by a commutative algebra generated by the cycles in its quiver. We conclude with an example of a quiver algebra where projective dimension and geometric codimension, rather than height, coincide.

In this paper we classify non-commutative quadrics and study their homological properties. In fact we find all non-commutative algebras of degree 2 up to isomorphism and we study these algebras via their homomorphic images onto the polynomial algebra k[x,y] as well as the Ext 1(k(p), k(q))-groups, where k(p) and k(q) are one-dimensional simple modules. Moreover some general results on simple finite-dimensional modules are obtained. Some of these results are applied to the special cases of non-commutative quadrics.

AbstractWe find the model completion of the theory modules over , where is a finitely generated commutative algebra over a field K. This is done in a context where the field K and the module are represented by sorts in the theory, so that constructible sets associated with a module can be interpreted in this language. The language is expanded by additional sorts for the Grassmanians of all powers of Kn, which are necessary to achieve quantifier elimination. The result turns out to be that the model completion is the theory of a certain class of “big” injective modules. In particular, it is shown that the class of injective modules is itself elementary. We also obtain an explicit description of the types in this theory.

AbstractGeneralizing the concept of right bounded rings, a module MR is called bounded if annR(M/N)≤eRR for all N≤eMR. The module MR is called fully bounded if (M/P) is bounded as a module over R/annR(M/P) for any ℒ2-prime submodule P◃MR. Boundedness and right boundedness are Morita invariant properties. Rings with all modules (fully) bounded are characterized, and it is proved that a ring R is right Artinian if and only if RR has Krull dimension, all R-modules are fully bounded and ideals of R are finitely generated as right ideals. For certain fully bounded ℒ2-Noetherian modules MR, it is shown that the Krull dimension of MR is at most equal to the classical Krull dimension of R when both dimensions exist.

Let A be a finitely generated commutative algebra over a field K with a presentation A = K 〈X1,…, Xn | R〉, where R is a set of monomial relations in the generators X1,…, Xn. So A = K[S], the semigroup algebra of the monoid S = 〈X1,…, Xn | R〉. We characterize, purely in terms of the defining relations, when A is an integrally closed domain, provided R contains at most two relations. Also the class group of such algebras A is calculated.

This paper is a direct continuation of the paper “Duality for dyadic intervals” by the same authors, and can be considered as its second part. Dyadic rationals are rationals whose denominator is a power of 2. Dyadic triangles and dyadic polygons are, respectively, defined as the intersections with the dyadic plane of a triangle or polygon in the real plane whose vertices lie in the dyadic plane. The one-dimensional analogues are dyadic intervals. Algebraically, dyadic polygons carry the structure of a commutative, entropic and idempotent groupoid under the binary operation of arithmetic mean. The first paper dealt with the structure of finitely generated subgroupoids of the dyadic line, which were shown to be isomorphic to dyadic intervals. Then a duality between the class of dyadic intervals and the class of certain subgroupoids of the dyadic unit square was described. The present paper extends the results of the first paper, provides some characterizations of dyadic triangles, and describes a duality for the class of dyadic triangles. As in the case of intervals, the duality is given by an infinite dualizing (schizophrenic) object, the dyadic unit interval. The dual spaces are certain subgroupoids of the dyadic unit cube, considered as (commutative, idempotent and entropic) groupoids with additional constant operations.

Let [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be two rings, [Formula: see text] an ideal of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be a ring homomorphism. The ring [Formula: see text] is called the amalgamation of [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] along [Formula: see text] with respect to [Formula: see text]. It was proposed by D’anna and Fontana [Amalgamated algebras along an ideal, Commutative Algebra and Applications (W. de Gruyter Publisher, Berlin, 2009), pp. 155–172], as an extension for the Nagata’s idealization, which was originally introduced in [Nagata, Local Rings (Interscience, New York, 1962)]. In this paper, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which [Formula: see text], and some related constructions, is either a Hilbert ring, a [Formula: see text]-domain or a [Formula: see text]-ring in the sense of Adams [Rings with a finitely generated total quotient ring, Canad. Math. Bull. 17(1) (1974)]. By the way, we investigate the transfer of the [Formula: see text]-property among pairs of domains sharing an ideal. Our results provide original illustrating examples.

The study of the cohomological dimension of algebraic varieties has produced some interesting results and problems in local algebra. Let 𝔞 be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R. For finitely generated R-modules M and N, the concept of cohomological dimension cd 𝔞(M, N) of M and N with respect to 𝔞 is introduced. If 0 → N' → N → N'' → 0 is an exact sequence of finitely generated R-modules, then it is shown that cd 𝔞(M, N) = max { cd 𝔞(M, N'), cd 𝔞(M, N'')} whenever proj dim M < ∞. Also, if L is a finitely generated R-module with Supp (N/Γ𝔞(N)) ⊆ Supp (L/Γ𝔞(L)), then it is proved that cd 𝔞(M, N) ≤ max { cd 𝔞(M,L), proj dim M}. Finally, as a consequence, a result of Brodmann is improved.

We consider a class of self-injective special biserial algebras ΛN over a field K and show that the Hochschild cohomology ring of dΛN is a finitely generated K-algebra. Moreover, the Hochschild cohomology ring of ΛN modulo nilpotence is a finitely generated commutative K-algebra of Krull dimension two. As a consequence the conjecture of [N. Snashall and Ø. Solberg, Support varieties and Hochschild cohomology rings, Proc. London Math. Soc.88 (2004) 705–732], concerning the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence, holds for this class of algebras.

A local ring O is called regular if every finitely generated ideal I ◃ O possesses finite projective dimension. In the article localizations O = Aq, q ∈ Spec A, of a finitely presented, flat algebra A over a Prüfer domain R are investigated with respect to regularity: this property of O is shown to be equivalent to the finiteness of the weak homological dimension wdim O. A formula to compute wdim O is provided. Furthermore regular sequences within the maximal ideal M ◃ O are studied: it is shown that regularity of O implies the existence of a maximal regular sequence of length wdim O. If q ∩ R has finite height, then this sequence can be chosen such that the radical of the ideal generated by its members equals M. As a consequence it is proved that if O is regular, then the factor ring O/(q ∩ R)O, which is noetherian, is Cohen–Macaulay. If in addition (q ∩ R)Rq ∩ R is not finitely generated, then O/(q ∩ R)O itself is regular.
