New strategies for the synthesis of two pyridine dicarboxylic acid derivatives namely; 4-(2-(2,6-dicarboxypyridin-4-yl)vinyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and 2,6-bis(2-(2,6–dicarboxy-pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)pyridine have been described. New oxidant used is a good example of green chemistry technology and the synthesis procedure harvest a high-purity product at a high yield.

A new facile synthesis of pyridine dicarboxylic acid derivative, dimethyl 4-(2-(2,6-bis(methoxycarbonyl)pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (DVDPA), from dimethyl 4-(chloromethyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (CMDPA) in presence of nitrogen bases has been described. The influences of different base/CMDPA molar ratio and different nitrogen bases were also investigated. The result has shown that the yield could reach 81 % when triethylamine was used and the molar ratio of base/CMDPA was 2.4. The overall yield of title compound via the three-step synthesis starting from dimethyl 4-(hydroxylmethyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (HMDPA) was improved to 69 %.

An adaptation on the classical synthesis methodology for 1,3-diaryltriazenes for a 4-hour experimental class has been proposed with green chemistry principles in mind by using commercial vinegar as a source for diazotization with NaNO2 and keeping the reaction workup to simple vacuum filtration. Several anilines with different substituent groups were used to evaluate how they affect the synthesis based on their electron-donating/withdrawing characteristics. The decomposition of the triazenes in acidic media was also monitored via TLC. On the overall, the reactions came up with medium to high yield and high purity. Experimental procedure, reaction mechanism and other potential discussions such as green chemistry principles and effects of electron-donating/withdrawing groups are suitable for undergraduate students.

In this work, a green chemistry strategy was developed to synthesize blue pigments SrCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 with good yield and high purity. SrCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 exhibit hierarchical structures. Our study shows that hydrothermally synthesized BaCuSi2O6 exhibits interesting broad near-infrared luminescence.
