We report a case of a professional soccer player suffering from a traumatic cartilage lesion grade IV according to the Outerbridge classification at the femoral condyle treated with an enhanced microfracture technique (AMIC). Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis (AMIC) is an innovative treatment for localized full-thickness cartilage defects combining the well-known microfracturing with collagen scaffold and fibrin glue. Because of the cartilage lesion (3 cm2), an AMIC procedure was performed followed by a rehabilitation program according to the protocols in the literature, (Steadman et al.; 2003). After 8 months of rehabilitation, the player returned to team training and after 10 months to competition. Altogether he returned to the same skill level for almost one year after the index operation. He is very satisfied with the clinical results after AMIC, which corresponds with the Lysholm score of 90 points at 12 months.

The incidence of medial sesamoid bone fracture is rare. Clinically they are often misdiagnosed as soft tissue injuries and often missed. Thus generates an important morbidity for the patient. Objectives: We present a case of turf-toe injury: plantar-plate rupture with medial sesamoid bone fracture in a contact athlete. Methods: A 19-year-old professional soccer player injured his left toe when he planted his foot during a sprint. He had an hyperextension and axial overload traumatism in his toe. On physical examination he had pain, swollen, ecchymosis, instability and loss of plantar-flexion strength. Radiographs showed a transverse medial sesamoid bone fracture with retraction > 3 mm. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a subluxation of the proximal phalange and a plantar plate disruption. Because of the completely deficient flexion, the sesamoid retraction, and the articular subluxation, surgery was recommended to restore the MTPJ anatomy. Reduction of the fracture and Repair of the plantar plate was performed using non-absorbable 2-0 Fiber wire sutures through a medial approach. Postoperatively, the patient was placed in a cast, for a total of 2 weeks. After that he began a rehabilitation program. Results: The patient had a complete recovery. He returned to participation in his team at 3 months. At final follow-up, his dorsiflexion ROM was 60 in the involved toe. Conclusion: Turf-toe and disorders of the sesamoid complex is an important injury, often misdiagnosed and usually undertreated. They had an incidence of 25% to 50% of residual pain and limited dorsiflexion in those cases. Despite the incidence of surgical treatment of 2%, we have found hopeful results with the open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture. Accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment can allow for full return to activity for these athletes.

Michael Lahoud is a professional soccer player who currently plays for Miami FC in the North American Soccer League (NASL). He was born in Sierra Leone, where he escaped civil war when he was 6 years old. As a refugee, soccer helped him integrate in the United States, where he was drafted as the ninth overall pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer (MLS) superdraft. He is a community advocate who uses his sport to support charitable efforts such as the Wall Las Memorias project, the NoH8 campaign, and Schools for Salone. He was the MLS Humanitarian of the Year in 2010, and, together with Kei Kamara, he is the recipient of the 2015 FIFPro World Players’ Union Merit Award (a prize worth $25,000), which recognized their involvement in the Schools for Salone project that builds schools in their home country of Sierra Leone. His brand is Soccer can make a difference. This interview consists of two parts, with the first part being conducted in December 2015 when he was a player with the MLS team Philadelphia Union and the second part being conducted in July 2016 after two transfers within 4 months. The interviews provide an overview of his approach to athlete branding via social media and its impact on his career.

Abstract Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is an important operative option when repairing cartilage defects of the knee. This report introduces a new product development with one-stage ACI using a Reveille Cartilage Processor (Reveille CP) as well as the assessment of MRI and clinical results at a 1-year follow-up. The report compared cases between a 42-year-old female who underwent ACI surgery using Reveille CP and a 51-year old female who received treatment with two-stage ACI of tissue-engineered cartilage-like tissue (J-TEC Autologous Chondrocyte Cultured Cartilage [JACC]). One year after JACC, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed signal intensity area in the grafted area, while patients with Reveille CP showed greater thickness than the surrounding healthy cartilage. The Lysholm, pain and QOL scores of Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome (KOOS) at one 1 year after surgery with Reveille CP were higher than JACC.
