The original U-shaped patch antenna is properly modified in this work to provide a compact and broadband antenna configuration with reduced cross-polar effects, well suitable for modern radar applications. The proposed antenna layout is applied to design, realize, and test two different prototypes working at P-band and C-band, typically adopted for ground-penetrating radar. The experimental results successfully demonstrate a large operating bandwidth between 15% and 20%, a significant reduction of size (about half of the standard configuration), and a low cross-polarization level within the operating frequency range.

<p>The WISDOM ground-penetrating radar aboard the 2022 ESA-Roscosmos Rosalind-Franklin ExoMars Rover will probe the shallow subsurface of Oxia Planum using electromagnetic waves. A dual-polarized broadband antenna assembly transmits the WISDOM signal into the Martian subsurface and receives the return signal. This antenna assembly has been extensively tested and characterized w.r.t. the most significant antenna parameters (gain, pattern, matching). However, during the design phase, these parameters were simulated or measured without the environment, i.e., in the absence of other objects like brackets, rover vehicle, or soil. Some measurements of the rover's influence on the WISDOM data were performed during the instrument's integration.</p><p>It was shown that the rover structure and close surroundings in the near-field region of the WISDOM antenna assembly have a significant impact on the WISDOM signal and sounding performance. Hence, it is essential to include the simulations' environment, especially with varying surface and underground.</p><p>With this contribution, we outline the influences of rover and ground on the antenna's pattern and particularly on the footprint. We employ a 3D field solver with a complete system model above different soil types, i.e., subsurface materials with various combinations of permittivity and conductivity.</p>

A dual-polarization substrate-integrated Fabry-Pérot cavity (SI-FPC) antenna is presented in this paper. The patch embedded in SI-FPC is excited with a near-field coupled feeding structure for V-polarization and with a slot-coupled feeding structure for H-polarization. The feeding structures are separated by a ground plane to improve the isolation between the ports. As a design example, an antenna operating at 10.0 GHz is fabricated and measured. A high degree of port isolation (<−40 dB) over the whole operating bandwidth (9.5–10.2 GHz) and good cross-polarization level (>25 dB) can be achieved.

In this paper, we propose a shielding system for impulse ground penetrating radar applications (GPR). The structure of shielding system is designed for our real impulse GPR application at 200 MHz central frequency for improving the deep penetration. The shielding system makes high quality of signal transmission from transmitter antenna to receiver antenna for impulse GPR system. It not only makes lowest T/R antenna coupling, high performance of antennas, preventing external noise but also reduces unnecessary air radiation which damages to the health of GPR user. A commercial absorbing material with a short thickness of 40mm is used to reduce the reflection of upper side of antenna in the cavity of shielding system. The design procedure is derived and its performance is explained. Shielding system is designed, simulated and optimized successfully in CST 2013 software. And it is fabricated with a good measurement results.
