To investigate the characteristics and potential sources of heavy metals pollution, surface sediments collected from Bohai Bay, North China, were analyzed for the selected metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The Geoaccumulation Index was used to assess the level of heavy metal pollution. Pb isotopic compositions in sediments were also measured to effectively identify the potential Pb sources. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 0.15, 79.73, 28.70, 36.56, 25.63, and 72.83 mg/kg, respectively. The mean concentrations of the studied metals were slightly higher than the background values. However, the heavy metals concentrations in surface sediments in Bohai Bay were below the other important bays or estuaries in China. The assessment by Geoaccumulation Index indicated that Cr, Zn, and Cd were classified as “the unpolluted” level, while Ni, Cu, and Pb were ranked as “unpolluted to moderately polluted” level. The order of pollution level of heavy metals was:Pb>Ni>Cu>Cr>Zn>Cd. The Pb isotopic ratios in surface sediments varied from 1.159 to 1.185 for206Pb/207Pb and from 2.456 to 2.482 for208Pb/207Pb. Compared with Pb isotopic radios in other sources, Pb contaminations in the surface sediments of Bohai Bay may be controlled by the mix process of coal combustion, aerosol particles deposition, and natural sources.

A geochemical study of was carried out to analyze the concentrations, distribution and accumulation of the SMTEs (Seldom Monitored Trace Elements) in sediments of Bohai Bay, North China. The results showed that the average concentrations of V, Co, Mo, Sb, Tl and Mn were 98.26, 15.07, 0.75, 2.06, 0.64 and 678.80 mg/kg, respectively. SMTEs concentrations and their spatial distribution indicated that the SMTEs were due to anthropogenic inputs except for Mo. The assessment of Geoaccumulation Index showed that Sb was at the level of unpolluted to moderately polluted, and the other SMTEs were at the unpolluted level. The order of the pollution level of the SMTEs was: Sb > Tl > V Co > Mn > Mo.

The heavy metals contents of 29 samples were tested in Nansi Lake which was divided into 5 parts. The heavy metals included Hg, Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn and As. The spatial distribution of heavy metals of 5 Lakes region has been received. The pollution of heavy metals was with evaluated with Igeo and RI. The results showed that: Nasi Lake has been polluted by heavy metals in middle level, and As, Hg, Cd and Pb were more serious. The heavy metals pollution of the part in north were more serious than in south, except the As and Cd. Overall, the heavy metals pollution in the north Zhaoyang Lake was the most serious, followed by the Nanyang Lake, Weishan Lake, Dushan Lake and the south Zhaoyang Lake.
