The nonparametric (NP) control charts are famous for detecting a shift in the process parameters (location and/or dispersion) when the underlying process characteristic does not follow the distributional assumptions. Similarly, when the cost of estimations is very high and the ranking of observational is relatively simple, the ranked set sampling (RSS) technique is preferred over the simple random sampling (SRS) technique. On the other hand, the NP triple exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart based on SRS is superior to the NP EWMA and NP double EWMA (NP DEWMA) based on the SRS technique to detect a shift in the process location. This study designed an advanced form of NP TEWMA Wilcoxon signed-rank based on RSS, denoted as TEWMA − SR RSS control chart to identify a shift in the process location parameter. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to assess the performance of the proposed TEWMA − SR RSS control chart along with SRS-based NP TEWMA (TEWMA-SR), SRS-based NP TEWMA sign (TEWMA-SN), SRS-based TEWMA − X ¯ , and RSS-based NP DEWMA-SR DEWMA − SR RSS control charts. The study shows that the proposed TEWMA − SR RSS control chart is more efficient in identifying shifts (especially in small shifts) in the process location than the existing control charts. Finally, a real-life application is also provided for the practical implementation of the proposed TEWMA − SR RSS control chart.

Conventional control charts are one of the most important techniques in statistical process control which are used to assess the performance of processes to see whether they are in- or out-of-control. As traditional control charts deal with crisp data, they are not suitable to study unclear, vague, and fuzzy data. In many real-world applications, however, the data to be used in a control charting method are not crisp since they are approximated due to environmental uncertainties and systematic ambiguities involved in the systems under investigation. In these situations, fuzzy numbers and linguistic variables are used to grab such uncertainties. That is why the use of a fuzzy control chart, in which fuzzy data are used, is justified. As an exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) scheme is usually used to detect small shifts, in this paper a fuzzy EWMA (F-EWMA) control chart is proposed to detect small shifts in the process mean when fuzzy data are available. The application of the newly developed fuzzy control chart is illustrated using real-life data.

Statistical process control is an important tool for maintaining the quality of a production process. Several control charts are available to monitor changes in process parameters. In this study, a control chart for the process mean is proposed. For this purpose, an auxiliary variable is used in the form of a regression estimator under the configuration of the hybrid exponentially weighted moving average (HEWMA) control chart. The proposed chart is evaluated by conducting a simulation study. The results showed that the proposed chart is sensitive with respect to the HEWMA chart. A real-life application is also presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control chart.

Control charts are effective tools for detecting out-of-control conditions of process parameters in manufacturing and service industries. The development of distribution-free control charts is important in statistical process control when the process quality variable follows an unknown or a non-normal distribution. This research thus proposes to use a distribution-free technology to establish a new control region based on the exponentially weighted moving average median statistic and exponentially weighted moving average interquartile range statistic for simultaneously monitoring the process location and dispersion and further sets up a corresponding new control chart. We compute the out-of-control average run length to evaluate out-of-control detection performance of the proposed control region and also compare the proposed control region with some existing location and dispersion control charts. Results show that our proposed chart always exhibits superior detection performance when the shifts in process location and/or dispersion are small or moderate. The new control region is thus recommended. Keywords: control chart, distribution-free, dispersion and location, EWMA, kernel control region, kernel density estimation.

Investigation and removal of unnatural variation in the processes of manufacturing, production and services require application of statistical process control. Control charts are the most famous and commonly used statistical process control tools to trace changes in the manufacturing and nonmanufacturing processes parameter(s). The nonparametric control charts become necessary when the distribution of underlying process is unknown or questionable. The nonparametric charts are robust alternative along with holding property of quick shift detection ability in process parameter(s). In this article, we have proposed nonparametric double exponentially weighted moving average chart based on Wilcoxon signed rank test under simple and ranked set sampling schemes for efficient monitoring of the process location. The proposed control charts are compared with classical exponentially weighted moving average, double exponentially weighted moving average, nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average sign, nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average signed rank, nonparametric cumulative sum signed rank charts using average run length and some other characteristics of run length distribution as performance measures. Comparison reveals that the proposed control charts performs better to detect all kinds of shifts in the process location than existing counterparts. A real-life application related to manufacturing process (the variable of interest is the diameter of piston ring) is also provided for the practical implementation of the proposed chart.

The double exponentially weighted moving average (DEWMA) control chart has been observed to be more sensitive than the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart for process monitoring assuming that the quality characteristic follows the normal distribution. In this paper, the DEWMA control chart is proposed for monitoring quality characteristics that follow the exponential distribution using variable transformation technique. The in-control and out-of-control average run lengths (ARLs) of the proposed control chart is obtained for equal and unequal smoothing constants. The performance of the proposed control chart with equal and unequal smoothing constants was investigated and compared with recent existing control charts in terms of the out-of-control average run lengths. Real life example is given to demonstrate the application of the proposed chart. The findings show that the performance of the proposed control chart outweighs existing control charts in the monitoring of process parameter when the quality variable follows exponential distribution for all shift sizes.

In this paper, two methods of control chart were proposed to monitor the process based on the two-parameter Gompertz distribution. The proposed methods are the Gompertz Shewhart approach and Gompertz skewness correction method. A simulation study was conducted to compare the performance of the proposed chart with that of the skewness correction approach for various sample sizes. Furthermore, real-life data on thickness of paint on refrigerators which are nonnormal data that have attributes of a Gompertz distribution were used to illustrate the proposed control chart. The coverage probability (CP), control limit interval (CLI), and average run length (ARL) were used to measure the performance of the two methods. It was found that the Gompertz exact method where the control limits are calculated through the percentiles of the underline distribution has the highest coverage probability, while the Gompertz Shewhart approach and Gompertz skewness correction method have the least CLI and ARL. Hence, the two-parameter Gompertz-based methods would detect out-of-control faster for Gompertz-based X¯ charts.

ABSTRACT Statistical process control in mechanized farming is a new way to assess operation quality. In this sense, we aimed to compare three statistical process control tools applied to losses in sugarcane mechanical harvesting to determine the best control chart template for this quality indicator. Losses were daily monitored in farms located within Triângulo Mineiro region, in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. They were carried over a period of 70 days in the 2014 harvest. At the end of the evaluation period, 194 samples were collected in total for each type of loss. The control charts used were individual values chart, moving average and exponentially weighted moving average. The quality indicators assessed during sugarcane harvest were the following loss types: full grinding wheel, stumps, fixed piece, whole cane, chips, loose piece and total losses. The control chart of individual values is the best option for monitoring losses in sugarcane mechanical harvesting, as it is of easier result interpretation, in comparison to the others.

When the production run is short and process parameters change frequently, it is difficult to monitor the process using traditional control charts. In such a case, the coefficient of variation (CV) is very useful for monitoring the process variability. The CV control chart, however, is not sensitive at small shift in the magnitude of CV. The CV-EWMA (exponentially weighted moving average) control chart which was developed recently is effective in detecting a small shifts of CV. In this paper, we propose the CV-DEWMA control chart, combining the DEWMA (double exponentially weighted moving average) technique. We show that CV-DEWMA control chart perform better than CV-EWMA control chart in detecting small shifts when sample size n is larger than 5.
