<span>Billboards are objects, tools or actions, which based on the characteristics serve its own purpose to earn profits, advertise certain people or service, and to draw public’s attention by placing it in a very strategic place. It has led the government to charge tax on billboards based on its location, dimensions, and viewpoints. Therefore, authorized parties have to be able to ensure the data authenticity of the proposed billboards. One of the obstacles in data verification is the time of billboards measurement process due to its size and height from the ground, based on this problem, and we developed a system which can measure the dimensions of billboards without physically touching it by implementing image processing methods to identify the billboards. The implementation is by measuring the dimensions of the billboards using perspective concept, then calculates the distance between the camera and the object using two-point distance calculation GPS coordinates. The results showed that the distance calculation using the GPS method generated inaccurate values, whereas the systematic distance method generated a result of errors’ range from 0.5 to 25 cm if the image acquisition is performed nearly perpendicular to the object.</span>

The measurement system based on industry CCD and image processing was established to measure 2D sizes of parts. The CCD sensors, lenses, illumination and image acquisition modes were chosen to establish hardware part, according to the requirement of views and precision. The software system was developed to extract the edge of the part from the digital image and transform it to a polynomial. The actual sizes of the part were measured with relative comparison calibrating method. Tests and analyses show that it is an untouched, automatic 2D Measurement system with high accuracy.

Tool wear and breakage detection technologies are of vital importance for the development of automatic machining systems and improvement in machining quality and efficiency. The monitoring of integral spiral end milling cutters, however, has rarely been investigated due to their complex structures. In this paper, an image acquisition system and image processing methods are developed for the wear and breakage detection of milling cutters based on machine vision. The image acquisition system is composed of three light sources and two cameras mounted on a moving frame, which renders the system applicable in cutters of different dimensions and shapes. The images captured by the acquisition system are then preprocessed with denoising and contrast enhancing operations. The failure regions on the rake face, flank face and tool tip of the cutter are extracted with the Otsu thresholding method and the Markov Random Field image segmentation method afterwards. Eventually, the feasibility of the proposed image acquisition system and image processing methods is demonstrated through an experiment of titanium alloy machining. The proposed image acquisition system and image processing methods not only provide high quality detection of the integral spiral end milling cutter but can also be easily converted to detect other cutting systems with complex structures.

Rice seed production in Malaysia is greatly dependent on the purity of the cultivated paddy seed produced through the government certified paddy seed program. The seeds to be marketed by the seed processors must undergo quality control protocol where the seed lots are sampled from the seed farms and seed processing plants for purity analysis by the enforcing agency at the Seed Testing Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture (DoA). The current inspection conducted by the laboratory is based on a manual process, which is laborious and time-consuming. Therefore, a prototype (Patent ID: PI2018500018) of a machine vision-based rice seed inspection system (RiSe-IViS) was developed to explore the possibility of replacing the existing manual method in distinguishing the weedy rice and cultivated rice seeds under the Standard Jabatan Pertanian Malaysia (SJPM) standard protocol with a modern, effective and efficient technique using an image processing approach. The developed RiSe-IViS prototype consists of two parts i) hardware configuration and ii) software development. This paper discussed the criteria to be established, challenges and limitation encountered in developing the hardware prototype involving the image acquisition setup, lighting configuration and seed plate design. The importance of each criterion to ensure its reproducibility are also discussed. A software programme was developed to assist the user for image acquisition and analysis. The image processing steps undertaken in the programme are also discussed. The RiSe-IViS is expected to classify major rice seed varieties available in Malaysia against the weedy rice variants with superior accuracy.

Airbags are subjected to strict quality control in order to ensure passengers safety. The quality of fabric and sewing thread influences the final product and therefore, sewing defects must be early and accurately detected, in order to remove the item from production. Airbag seams assembly can take various forms, using linear and circle primitives, with threads of different colors and length densities, creating lockstitch or double threads chainstitch. The paper presents a framework for the automatic detection of defects occurring during the airbag sewing stage. Types of defects as skipped stitch, missed stitch, or superimposed seam for lockstitch and two threads chainstitch are detected and marked. Using image processing methods, the proposed framework follows the seams path and determines if a color pattern of the considered stitches is valid.

Advances in camera technology and digital instrument control have meant that in modern microscopy, the image that was, in the past, typically recorded on a piece of film is now recorded directly into a computer. The transfer of the analog image seen in the microscope to the digitized picture in the computer does not mean, however, that the problems associated with recording images, analyzing them, and preparing them for publication, have all miraculously been solved. The steps involved in the recording an image to film remain largely intact in the digital world. The image is recorded, prepared for measurement in some way, analyzed, and then prepared for presentation.Digital image acquisition schemes are largely the realm of the microscope manufacturers, however, there are also a multitude of “homemade” acquisition systems in microscope laboratories around the world. It is not the mission of this tutorial to deal with the various acquisition systems, but rather to introduce the novice user to rudimentary image processing and measurement.

The article discusses the quality testing of a measuring system consisting of a CNC machine with measuring probes. The research was conducted in a broader context regarding the implementation of the closed door technology, i.e., production without human intervention, in an aviation plant manufacturing aircraft gearbox systems. This technology may involve automated measuring operations performed in machining centers, and not in measuring laboratories, provided that the quality of the measurements is appropriate. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the CNC machining device can be used to measure the geometric features of aircraft gearbox housing. For this purpose, measurement experiments were carried out with the use of three different probes. Measurements were carried out using four sequences of increasing complexity, so that, after error analysis, it was possible to find the causes of possible irregularities. A reference ring with known dimensions and position in the working space of the machine was used for the measurements performed as part of the assessment of the measurement system. The quality of the measurements was evaluated with the use of repeatability and reproducibility testing and statistical process control. The analysis results showed that the tested measurement system ensures adequate accuracy and repeatability, and the measurement process is characterized with adequate efficiency in relation to the manufacturing tolerance of the components produced using the machine. Thus, it was proven that the measurement process can be carried out on a machining device, which enables its integration into the closed door technology.
