This paper shows dual stage thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs) that use a pump power distribution technique. Simulations were done with signals ranging from 1975 nm to 2000 nm using the OptiSystem v.13 software. The results required were gathered from the software. The results of gain, noise figure, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and output power were obtained. The highest gain and lowest noise figure results were achieved for the double pass dual stage TDFA configuration with values of 19.85 dB and 5.58 dB respectively, followed by the single pass dual stage TDFA. The OSNR and output power performances were also better for the double pass dual stage TDFA, obtaining 57.12 dB and 19.55 dBm respectively. This study shows that thulium can be used in the 2 µm region as an active gain medium and the dual stage architecture and distributed pumping technique proves to be effective techniques to obtain the desired results. Experimental work will be done in the future with the simulated results used as a reference.

Abstract A hybrid Raman-erbium random fiber laser (RFL) with a half-open cavity assisted by chirped artificially controlled backscattering fiber reflectors (ACBFRs) is presented. A combination of 2.4 km of dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) with two highly erbium-doped fiber (EDF) pieces of 5 m length was used as gain medium. A single random laser emission line centered at 1553.8 nm with an output power level of -6.5 dBm and an optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of 47 dB was obtained when pumped at 37.5 dBm. A full width at half maximum (FHWM) of 1 nm and a 100% confidence level (CL) output power instability as low as 0.08 dB were measured. The utilization of the new laser cavity as a temperature and strain sensor is also experimentally studied.

The optical amplification performance of the proposed Zirconia Yttria Aluminum Erbium co-doped fiber (Zr-EDF) was compared for two different pumping schemes; 1480 and 980[Formula: see text]nm. An efficient [Formula: see text]-band amplifier was achieved using 3[Formula: see text]m length of Zr-EDF while 1480[Formula: see text]nm pumping is found to provide higher attainable gain and better noise figure as compared to 980[Formula: see text]nm pumping. At a pumping wavelength of 1480[Formula: see text]nm and an input signal power of [Formula: see text]10[Formula: see text]dBm, the proposed amplifier provides a relatively flat-gain of about 13.3[Formula: see text]and 17.3[Formula: see text]dB with single-pass and double-pass configuration, respectively, where the gain variation was less than 1[Formula: see text]dB within a wavelength region of 1560–1600[Formula: see text]nm. The noise figures of the proposed Zr-EDFA were maintained below 8 and 14.5[Formula: see text]dB for single-pass and double-pass arrangement, respectively, within the flat-gain region. Compared to the conventional amplifier configured with silica based erbium-doped fiber amplifier, the proposed Zr-EDF-based amplifier achieves a higher and flatter gain and lower noise figure at [Formula: see text]-band region even though it uses a shorter length of gain medium.

Kata kunci: Gentian terdop erbium, pembesar optik, pembesar terdop erbium, jalus LPTE An experiment on gain enhancement in the long–wavelength band erbium–doped fiber amplifier (L–band EDFA) is demonstrated using a dual stage configuration. Compared to a conventional single–stage amplifier, the small signal gain for a 1580 nm signal can be improved by 5.5 dB without paying much noise figure penalty. The corresponding noise figure penalty was 0.3 dB due to the insertion loss of the optical isolator. The optimum pump power ratio for the first pump was experimentally determined to be 33%. The maximum gain improvement of 8.3 dB was obtained at a signal wavelength of 1568 nm while signal and total pump powers were fixed at –30 dBm and 92 mW, respectively. These results show that the employment of the dual–stage amplifier system will play an important role in the development of a practical L–band EDFA from the perspective of economical usage of pump power. Abstract In this paper, the performance of single and double-pass thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (SD-TDFA and DP-TDFA) is analyzed in the short wavelength (S-band) region. The effect of thulium-doped fiber (TDF) length, input signal power, and input pumping power on the amplifier’s performance is comprehensively investigated on basis of gain and noise figure (NF). DP-TDFA showed a higher gain compared to single-pass configuration and that is due to double-propagation of the forwarded and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) signal into the TDF which maximizes the achievable gain in the S-band region. At a gain medium length of 8 m, the proposed DP-TDFA showed higher gain enhancement over SP-TDFA at an input power of −20 dB compared to −40 and 0 dB input signal powers. The gain enhancement at 1470 nm is 5.6 dB, while the maximum recorded gain with the proposed double-pass configuration is 14.7 dB.

In this chapter, I propose a comprehensive study of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and erbium doped fiber laser (EDFL). The chapter is based on three principal levels: the first is at the atomic level, where it is evident and meaningful to give general and deep studies on erbium spectra at theoretical background angle. The important part that needs to be understood in the erbium is its energy level splitting and lasing. The second level is based on the EDFA and EDFL critical, where many research papers have been reviewed to show and clarify their strong and weak side at different views. To specify the weakness of the classical EDFA and EDFL, and to describe the future generations and its characteristics, it is very important to review the recent published papers and books. At the experimental level a full investigation is given. Vast and new designs were invented showing high-gain and low-noise-figure (NF) utilizing a new technique called double pass with filter. An efficient amplification occurs at the signal wavelength of 1550 nm when it travels along the design quadruple pass double stages with filter amplifier (QPDSF). The highest gain of 62.56 dB with a low NF of 3.98 dB was achieved for an input signal power of -50 dBm and pump powers of 10 and 165 mW in the second and first stage amplifiers respectively. This important result shows also, a large difference of 40 dB gain between the QPDSF and the single stage single pass (SPSS) EDFA configuration. This design is used to show high gain of 62.56 dB compared to SPSS which records only 20 dB. A higher power and wider spectrum of ASE is observed for the double pass compared with single pass. A comparative investigation is presented and analyzed for various configurations. At the end, a high output power EDFL configuration is reported. It incorporates a double stages linear cavity with fiber loopback and a tunable bandpass filter TBF. The configuration increases the output power by suppressing the amplified spontaneous emission and achieves a highly stable output power of more than 18 dBm at 1560 nm. A standard spectrum is attained with TBF adjustment.

We have demonstrated the performance improvement of L-band hybrid remote Erbium-doped fiber amplifier by introducing a phase modulator to suppress the stimulated Brilloiun scattering (SBS) effect in the transmission. The transmission gain has improved by 12.65dB while the noise figure has reduced by 47.1dB when 0dBm signal power is generated at 1590.05nm wavelength. Furthermore, the optical signal-to-noise ratio has improved from 7.81dB to 29.72dB when the signal power is varied from -30dBm to 0dBm. By implementing a phase modulator to the input signal somehow able to produce better performance regarding gain, noise figure and optical signal-to-noise ratio, especially at the higher signal power as the gain, has been transferred to the Stokes signal and the amplified signal.

In this paper, we present a novel erbium–ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) + Raman + EYDFA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) for a super-dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) system application. The performance of the 100-channel system has been investigated for an overall data rate and channel spacing of 100[Formula: see text]Gb/s and 0.4[Formula: see text]nm, respectively, over a wavelength span of 1550–1589.9[Formula: see text]nm. HOA has been optimized for Raman length, EYDFA lengths, pump powers and Er[Formula: see text] concentrations to achieve high average gain and low gain variation ratio of 40.41[Formula: see text]dB and 0.40[Formula: see text]respectively. The optimized configuration of the proposed HOA has been compared with EYDFA + Raman and Raman + EYDFA HOA configurations. The achieved high and flat gain with an acceptable output optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) in case of EYDFA + Raman + EYDFA HOA; makes it an optimum choice for SD-WDM systems.
