Due to increasing demand on electrical energy in Iraq and to have clean energy that is environmental friendly, wind energy would be one of the most important and promising sources of renewable energy to achieve this goal. This paper discussed the reasons to use the Doubly-Feed Induction Generator (DFIG) amongst the available types of wind turbine generators, and in section (4) illustrate Motivations to select place to the wind farm construction. using decupling method (the vector control strategy) to change reactive power of DFIG 2MW connected to middle of the 132KV transmission line (Karbala north – Alahkader) without effect about the active power generated from DFIG itself with fixed wind speed value assumed to provide the voltage regulation, and control of the transmission line In addition to power generating. By using PSCAD/EMTDC, different simulation results are presented based on various scenarios.

Using power electronic converters with reduced capacity in doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines make them vulnerable to over-current during grid disturbances. This thesis aims to analyze the behaviour of doubly-fed induction generators based wind farm for various timing schemes of crowbar deactivation and resumption of rotor side converter (RSC) in the case of grid fault. Also, usage of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for the purpose of stabilizing the grid voltage after a three-phase fault is studied in this these. Moreover, finding minimum capacity of STATCOM which ensures low-voltage ride through (LVRT) of wind farm is studied. Finally, coordination of reactive power from wind turbine generators and STATCOM in steady-state condition is performed. All the results in this thesis show that STATCOM improves low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of wind farm and assists for an uninterrupted operation of wind turbine generators during grid faults.

This paper analyses the mechanism of large scale cascading trip-off failures of wind turbine generators in China, focuses on the reasons of trip-off caused by overvoltage. It analyses the model of Doubly Fed Induction Generation (DFIG) and builds a model of a wind farm that is composed of Doubly Fed Induction generators in DIgSILENT. The wind farm A with capacity of 175MW and wind farm B with capacity of 175MW is accessed to the nine bus system. The simulation reproduces the processes of the cascading trip-off of wind turbine generators caused by undervoltage and overvoltage. The trip-off caused by undervoltage is due to the lack of Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT). And that the capacitive reactive power compensation device is not timely removed leads to a large surplus of reactive power, then the voltage rises, so the wind turbine generators trip off because of overvoltage. By setting the contrast scenario, the result shows that if capacitive reactive power compensation device is promptly removed after the loss of a large amount of active power, the wind turbine generators will not trip off because of overvoltage.

It is well known that the wind power has definitely certain impact on the grid power. Issues associated with the integration of wind power into the utility grid are interface issues, operational issues and planning issues. Interface issues include harmonics, reactive power consumption, voltage regulation and frequency control. Operational issues are intermittent power generation, operating reserve requirements, unit commitment and economic despatch. And planning issues are concerned with intermittent wind resources compared to conventional power resources. An important question, when connecting the wind turbine generators to the utility grid, is how much the power / voltage quality will be influenced, since the power production by wind turbines is intermittent, quantity wise as well as quality wise. This paper is focused on the on comparison between the constant speed wind turbines and variable speed wind turbines, reactive power consumption and harmonics generated by both wind turbines. Total harmonic distortion is calculated by the application of C++ software and a comparison is done between the generators with respect to the harmonics. It is observed that constant speed wind turbine generates low order harmonics and variable speed turbine generates high order harmonics. On the basis of results, some solutions are suggested to improve the wind power quality and to reduce reactive power consumption. It seems that variable speed wind turbines with electronic interface are better with respect to the utility grid point of view.

Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind power generation system is widely used in wind farm all over the world. Reactive power can be generated both in grid-side converter and generator-side converter of DFIG. In this paper, working principle and control method of DFIG are introduced, and the reactive power limit of DFIG is derived, finally reactive power regulation is simulated in Simulink.

Wind power is an important direction of new energy, which has no pollution, no consuming fossil fuels, and no producing waste, which is widely used at this stage of clean energy. The small stand alone wind power has been paid more and more attention due to its low cost, flexible installation, strong adaptability. This paper introduces the mechanical and electrical structure, which are used in KW level stand alone mode wind turbine automatically track and yaw system. The motion rules and control strategies of the tracking and yaw system are discussed and then the control program flow is provided. The PIC16F873 chip is used as controller for this part in this system. It can fully meet the design requirements, which will reduce costs and increase the system's control ability. This system can automatically track and yaw, according to the wind direction and wind power.

Abstract In order to solve the problems of global warming and depletion of energy resource, renewable energy systems such as wind generation are getting attention. However, wind power fluctuates due to variation of wind speed, and it is difficult to perfectly forecast wind power. This paper describes a method to use power forecast data of wind turbine generators considering wind power forecast error for optimal operation. The purpose in this paper is to smooth the output power fluctuation of a wind farm and to obtain more beneficial electrical power for selling.

Wind turbine installation worldwide has increased at unrested pace, as it represents a 100% clean energy with zero CO2 and pollutant emissions. However, visual and acoustic impact of wind turbines is still a drawback, in particular in urban areas. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of an innovative horizontal axis ducted wind turbine, installed in the harbour of Genova (Italy) in 2018: the turbine was designed in order to minimize visual and acoustic impacts and maximize electrical energy production, also during low wind speed periods. The preliminary study and experimental analyses, performed by the authors in a previous study, showed promising results in terms of energy production, compared to a traditional generator ( factor >2.5 on power output). In the present paper, the test campaign on a scaled-up prototype, installed in the urban area of Genova, is performed, with a twofold objective: (i) comparison of the ducted innovative turbine with a standard one, in order to verify the increase in energy production; (ii) analysis of the innovative turbine for different wind speeds and directions, evaluating the influence of ambient conditions on performance. Finally, based on the obtained results, an improved setup is proposed for the ducted wind turbine, in order to further increase energy production mitigating its visual impact.
