First record of Scinax centralis (Anura, Hylidae) in the Triângulo Mineiro region, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, with further data on its vocalization

Scinax comprises more than 120 species which are split in two clades, the S. ruber and the S. catharinae clades. A few species within the S. catharinae clade occur in gallery forests of the Brazilian Cerrado. We here extend the distribution of S. centralis southwards based on new populations sampled in the banks of the Rio Paranaíba, in the borders of Minas Gerais (MG) and Goiás (GO) states, southeastern Brazil. We also provide further data on the species vocalization. Variation was seen among our population and topotypes regarding SVL and call dominant frequency, both likely representing a clinal variation. Our new population of S. centralis represents the first record of the species for the state of Minas Gerais.

In this study we report the first record of the giant torrent frog Megaelosia apuana in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The finding of this species at Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Mata do Sossego, municipality of Simonésia, east of Minas Gerais extends its geographic distribution by 120 km from the type locality, and 45 km northwest from its westernmost known record. We present a new record of the Crested Eagle, Morphnus guianensis (Daudin, 1800), a rare forest eagle of the Neotropics on 22 May 2012 at a Cerrado area in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The species has only two historical records in the state, both at areas formerly covered by Atlantic Forest. The finding raises the expectations for the maintenance of the species in the state, stressing the fact that this is the first species record in a Cerrado area in Eastern Brazilian states.

Scinax tripui is a medium sized frog that belongs to the Scinax catharinae clade. We provide a new record of Scinax tripui from Serra de Torres, Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil. This is the first record outside the specie’s type locality (Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais) and the first record from the state of Espírito Santo.

Abstract: We present a list of the anuran amphibians from municipality of Barão de Monte Alto, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. This region is part of the remaining Atlantic Forest and the studied environments are represented by forest patches and open habitats. We recorded 29 anuran species, many of these typical and/or endemic to the Atlantic Forest. None of the species registered was considered under threat of extinction in state, national or international red-lists. It is worth noting, however, the presence of the tree frogs Dendropsophus pseudomeridianus, the first record of this species in the state of Minas Gerais, and D. bipunctatus, marking its expanded distribution in various locations of Minas Gerais. The present list examines zoogeography and conservation of anurans in the Brazilian southeast and broadens the knowledge of the anuran fauna in this region.

Oxyurella longicaudis (Birgei 1910), a species of Chydoridae family, is widely distributed in South and North America. Samples were collected from 40 water bodies in five conservation-priority regions in the south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil, aiming to increase knowledge about Cladocera distribution in this region. O. longicaudis was recorded in three of the 40 sampled water bodies. It is the first record of this species in the state.

A New Species

I describe here a new species of Pseudopaludicola (P. serrana) found in the southern limits of the Espinhaço mountain range in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This new species is related to P. saltica and P. murundu and can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: (1) long hindlimbs and absence of T-shaped terminal phalanges, (2) single, dark, and subgular vocal sac with dark longitudinal folds in males; (3) immaculate to light brown, nuptial pads in males that cover the external part of finger I; (4) SVL/HL greater than 2.7; and (5) advertisement call with dominant frequency above 5 kHz, pulse duration range between 13 and 23 ms, and mean interval between notes of 177 ms. Tadpoles and the advertisement call are also described.

We present the first record of Dipsas mikanii Schlegel, 1837 from the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. This species has a broad geographic distribution in eastern Brazil. We collected two specimens, one from Água Doce do Norte, a municipality approximately 90 km northeast from the nearest previously known locality in the state of Minas Gerais, and the second from Colatina, about 60 km east from the nearest record in Minas Gerais. We discuss and correct misidentified records of D. mikanii from the states of Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina.

Fritzschia Cham. is mainly distributed in the Brazilian Cerrado and, until now, was known from the Federal District and the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso do Sul. We present the first record of the genus in the state of Bahia, reporting Fritzschia sessilis (DC.) M.J.R.Rocha & P.J.F.Guim., a taxon previously considered endemic to Minas Gerais state.
