<p>The avifaunal diversity of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh with emphasis on Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding was observed for a period of one year between 2012 and 2013.  We observed 95 species of birds belonging to 12 orders and 40 families.  Of this diversity, 41 species were abundant to common, 34 occasional and 20 rare.  Most species were resident (83 species, including two species whose population increased during winters) and the rest were migrants (including nine winter migrating species and three summer migrating species).  A total of 302 species of birds have been reported from Chamba District between 1884 and present. Analysis of recent published literature in conjunction with the present study reveals that 178 species of birds have been reported from Chamba District since 2000.  The present study reports 11 new records for the district.</p><div> </div>

A study was conducted to understand the floristic diversity along an altitudinal gradient with elevations varying from 1800-2400m above msl in Lakadmandi beat of Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary in district Chamba, Himachal Pradesh during 2011. Total number of plant species was 81 belonging to 52 families and 76 genera. The dominant families were Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Pinaceae and Polygonaceae. The number of trees species was 6, 6 and 10 with the dominance of Quercus leucotrichophora, Cedrus deodara and Cedrus deodara at 1800-2000m, 2000-2200m and 2200-2400m elevation ranges respectively. The number of shrub species was 16, 13 and 23 with the dominance of Quercus leucotrichophora sapling, Sarcococca saligna and Sarcococca saligna at 1800-2000m, 2000-2200m and 2200-2400m elevations respectively. The number of herb species was 46, 46 and 58 at 1800-2000m, 2000-2200m and 2200-2400m elevation ranges respectively. On the basis of Importance Value Index (IVI), Valeriana jatamansii was the dominant herb at 2000-2200m and 2200-2400m elevation ranges respectively. The distribution pattern of most of plant species was contiguous at all altitudinal ranges. Index of diversity for herb species in these elevational ranges was 3.420, 3.568 and 3.250. Out of 40 medicinal plant species recorded from the area, 3 species i.e. Paris polyphylla, Podophyllum hexandrum and Taxus wallichiana fall in the category of threatened plants. The better conservation of natural resources can be done through promotion of community based conservation, ex-situ conservation through tissue culture, developing cultivation technologies and nurseries of medicinal plants and conducting of regular training on the procedure of medicinal plants collection and processing among the end users.

A list of horse fly species is presented for the district of Taquaruçu, Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil . A total of 34 species and three varieties were recorded over one year of collections. From those, 21 species and one variety were new records for the state.

Veronica ciliata subsp. cephaloides (Pennell) D.Y. Hong is reported here as a new record to the flora of Himachal Pradesh from Sechu Tuan Nalla Wildlife Sanctuary, Pangi, district Chamba. The species was previously reported from Sikkim and Uttarakhand. A brief description of the taxon, key to closely allied taxa and photographs of habitat and plant are provided to facilitate easy identification.

The tenebrionidae collections of Western Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India Pune were identified.  The species identified as Promethis brevicornis (Westwood, 1842) and Gebienocamaria girardi Masumoto, 1993 and collected from Sangli District and Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, Satara, respectively constitute a new record for Maharashtra State.

Background: Trauma in Himachal Pradesh is an increasingly significant problem, particularly in light of rapid development and increasing motorization. In the state of Himachal due to the predominantly hilly terrain people are more vulnerable to accidents, resulting in various injuries. Moreover, an increase in industrialization, ongoing construction of hydel projects and subsequent increase in accidents have also affected an increase in the incidence of trauma. Social and environmental changes are resulting in alterations in epidemiology of trauma. The present study was done to study the pattern, cause, mode and burden of trauma in patients presenting to IGMC Shimla.Methods: This prospective study was done on 4267 patients of trauma admitted to various departments of IGMC, Shimla during the period from June 2014 to May 2015. Detailed history of the patient, mode of injury was collected. Complete trauma profile and blood investigations were done in all patients. Postmortem findings of the trauma victims who died in IGMC or who were brought dead due to trauma were recorded. Results: The mean age of the patients in the study was 33.56 years. Male preponderance was noted (M:F-2.7:1). The commonest mode of injury was due to fall (75.60%). Of the total, 72.39% patients admitted with isolated injuries confined to one particular region, 11.72% patients with multiple injuries with in a single region, 13.01% patients with polytrauma, and 2.44% patients with burns. The rate of mortality was 2.06% (n=88).Conclusions: Improved infrastructure, behavior patterns of the individuals, can decrease the rate of trauma in the state. Development of strong and supportive management policies by the emergency departments in hospitals can reduce the mortality rate related with trauma.
