Abstract Background Soil seed banks may offer great potential for maintaining and restoring desert ecosystems that have been degraded by climate change and anthropogenic disturbance. However, few studies have explored the year-to-year dynamics in the species composition (richness and abundance) of these desert soil seed banks. Thus, we conducted a 4-year study to assess the effects of environmental factors (meteorology and microtopography) and aboveground vegetation on the soil seed bank of the Tengger Desert, China. Results We found the seed bank was dominated by annual herb species both in species richness and abundance. More rainfall in the growing season increased the number of seeds in the soil seed bank, and quadrat micro-elevation had a negative effect on soil seed bank size. The species composition in the seed bank had significantly larger between-year similarity than that in the aboveground vegetation due to the dominance of annual herb species. For different life forms, the species composition of annual herbs showed distinctly larger temporal similarity between the aboveground vegetation and the seed bank compared with perennial herbs and shrubs. Conclusions Our findings highlight that the combined effects of environmental factors and plant life forms determine the species composition (especially the abundance) of soil seed banks in deserts. However, if degraded desert ecosystems are left to regenerate naturally, the lack of shrub and perennial herb seeds could crucially limit their restoration. Human intervention and management may have to be applied to enhance the seed abundance of perennial lifeforms in degraded deserts.

Aralia armata is one of the common herb species in mountainous areas, especially in the northern mountainous areas of Vietnam, which has potential in pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Herein, we report that an oleanolic acid saponin named pseudogisenoside RT1 methyl ester (A) was isolated from the roots of the species Aralia armata. The fractionated extracts of dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, water and compound A were investigated for their molluscicidal effects, specifically on Pomacea canaliculata. The tests showed that the extracts and compound A from A. armata roots had good activity against P. canaliculata snail. In particular, compound A had a Lethal concentration of 50 (LC50) value of 16.443 µg/mL.

Biodiversity hotspots host a high diversity of narrowly distributed endemic species, which are increasingly threatened by climate change. In eastern North America, the highest concentration of plant diversity and endemism occurs in the Southern Appalachian Mountains (SAM). It has been hypothesized that this region served as a refugium during Pleistocene glacial cycles and that postglacial migration northward was dispersal limited. We tested this hypothesis using species distribution models for eight forest herb species. We also quantified the extent to which the geography of suitable habitat shifted away from the current range with climate change. We developed species distribution models for four forest herb species endemic to the SAM and four that co-occur in the same SAM habitats but have broader ranges. For widespread species, we built models using (1) all occurrences and (2) only those that overlap the SAM hotspot in order to evaluate the extent of Hutchinsonian shortfalls and the potential for models to predict suitable habitat beyond the SAM. We evaluated the extent to which predicted climatically suitable areas are projected to shift away from their current ranges under future climate change. We detected unoccupied but suitable habitat in regions up to 1,100 km north of the endemic species’ ranges. Endemic ranges are disjunct from suitable northern areas due to a ∼100–150 km gap of unsuitable habitat. Under future climate change, models predicted severe reductions in suitable habitat within current endemic ranges. For non-endemic species, we found similar overall patterns and gap of unsuitability in the same geographic location. Our results suggest a history of dispersal limitation following the last glacial maximum along with an environmental barrier to northward migration. Conservation of endemic species would likely require intervention and assisted migration to suitable habitat in northern New England and Canada.

Wild Water Buffalo (WWB) Bubalus arnee is an endangered species and a protected animal in Nepal. The remaining WWB population is located in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR), and it appears to have low viability under prevailing conditions. We assessed the habitat use and conservation threats to wild water buffalo in KTWR. For habitat analysis the quadrant method was used. Eighty-four quadrants of 25 m2 for trees, 168 quadrants of 10m2 for shrubs and 336 quadrants of 1 m2 for herbs were laid out in the study area. Ivlev’s electivity index (IV) was calculated to assess the use of different habitat components. The important Value Index (IVI) was used for vegetation assessment. A relative threat ranking method was used to assess conservation threats for wild buffalo and their habitats. Wild buffalo mostly preferred habitats with distance to water resources less than 500 m (IV= 0.4), less than 25 % crown coverage (IV= 0.39) and more than 75 % ground coverage (IV= 0.42). The trees species Phyllanthus emblica, Acacia catechu, shrub species Mimosa pudica and the herb species Brachiaria distachya, Vetiveria zizanioides, Imperata cylindrica, and Saccharum spontaneum were preferred by WWB in the study area. Among the different plant categories, we found that Acacia catechu was the most preferred tree species (IVI= 156.95), Mimosa pudica the most preferred shrub species (IVI= 58.68), and Imperata cylindrica the most preferred herb species (IVI= 64.73). Major conservation threats perceived by local stakeholders for wild buffaloes were overgrazing by cattle and genetic swamping through crossbreeding with domestic buffalo. Therefore, conservation of grass species through control of grazing, and prevention of cross breeding are measures supported by this study. Additionally, site-specific conservation strategies should be adopted, based on identified threats in the study area.

The restinga is an Atlantic Forest ecosystem characterized by tree, shrub, and herb species that are rich sources of essential oils. In this study, we aim to quantify the essential oil content and determine the chemical constituents of fresh leaves of 14 plant species in a restinga stretch in southern Brazil. Essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Campomanesia reitziana, Cortaderia selloana, and Sophora tomentosa had no essential oils. Total essential oil content ranged from 0.01% (Mikania involucrata) to 1.56% (Varronia curassavica). In total, 60 chemical constituents were identified, representing between 46.2% and 96.5% of the chemical composition of the essential oils. Limonene was the common constituent in all species in which the essential oils were present. The major constituents were ar-curcumene (15.1%) and cis-chrysanthenol (14.2%) in Ambrosia elatior; benzyl benzoate (43.5%) and benzyl salicylate (23.7%) in Aniba firmula; caryophyllene oxide (35.7%) and spathulenol (10.6%) in Austroeupatorium inulaefolium; spathulenol (19.8%) and caryophyllene oxide (14.0%) in Baccharis spicata; caryophyllene oxide (16.3%) in Eugenia astringens; curzerene (30.0%), limonene (13.0%), and germacrone (11.9%) in Eugenia uniflora; caryophyllene oxide (17.1%) and ledol (11.3%) in Lantana camara; caryophyllene oxide (27.7%) and limonene (12.7%) in M. involucrata; 1,8-cineole (19.8%) in Psidium cattleianum; limonene (10.2%) in Schinus terebinthifolius, and allo-aromadendrene (15.2%) in V. curassavica. We expect that our results can assist in selecting species of potential interest for herbal, phytotherapeutic, and cosmetic products.

Oxalidaceae atau suku belimbing-belimbingan merupakan suku yang berasal dari bangsa Oxalidales dan terdiri dari enam marga serta 775 jenis. Nama Oxalidaceae berasal dari Bahasa Yunani, oxic, artinya asam. Bagian tumbuhan pada suku ini terasa asam karena terdapat kandungan asam oksalat. Suku ini tersebar di seluruh dunia. Nilai ekonomi yang dihasilkan dari suku ini tergolong kecil, namun beberapa jenis berpotensi dan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai tumbuhan pangan, obat, dan ornamental. Suku Oxalidaceae juga terdapat di Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Kampus Ganesha. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisasi keanekaragaman jenis dalam suku Oxalidaceae di ITB Kampus Ganesha dengan menggunakan metode jelajah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan ditemukan enam jenis dari dua marga (Averrhoa dan Oxalis) dengan masing-masing bentuk hidup pohon dan herba secara berturut-turut. Keenam jenis dari suku Oxalidaceae yang ditemukan di ITB Kampus Ganesha antara lain Averrhoa bilimbi, Averrhoa carambola, Oxalis barrelieri, Oxalis corniculata, Oxalis debilis var. corymbosa, dan Oxalis intermedia. Kata kunci: Averrhoa;  ITB Ganesha; keanekaragaman; Oxalidaceae; Oxalis ABSTRACTStudy of diversity types in the Oxalidaceae tribe in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Ganesha CampusOxalidaceae, or wood sorrel family is a family that classified under Oxalidales order and consist of six genera and 775 species. The economic value of the species in this family is rather low, but some has potential to become food, medicinal, and ornamental plants. This family also found in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Ganesha campus. This research aimed to do inventory of the family’s species in ITB Ganesha campus. The method used in this research was roaming/exploration method. The result showed that there were six species from two genera (Averrhoa and Oxalis) found in the campus. The two Averrhoa species were found to be tree species meanwhile four Oxalis species were herb species. Individual (height of flowering shoot, length of rhizome segments and their number on a growth axis) and group parameters (cover, density of immature individuals, flowering and vegetative shoots) of a clonal tall-herb species Rumex alpinus were studied in the populations undergoing different stages of anthropogenic succession in the Carpathians. The species can form dense Rumiceta alpini ruderal communities on the manured soil near the livestock camps. Rumex alpinus has a long life span and thick long-living rhizomes in which the segments’ size reflects the viability of the individual in previous years. The studied parameters characterize the extent of disturbance in grassland ecosystems on different stages of their anthropogenic or restoration succession. A significant number of immature individuals of seed origin proves the young age of a population and indicates the degrading vector of changes in ecosystems. However, the individuals of seed origin (particularly, immature) are almost or completely missing in the established dense Rumiceta alpini because clonal reproduction prevails there. The highest individual and group parameters of R. alpinus have been registered in the sites that are manured. Cessation of anthropogenic impact results in thinning out of populations and their gradual decline. Annual increments of rhizomes demonstrate a successive increase in the invasive populations and decrease in the regressive ones. R. alpinus is also a component of some native undisturbed communities where it shows moderate viability of individuals and low population density. Thus, high values of individual and group parameters of this species indicate significant disturbance of the area and its low conservation value, while its infrequent occurrence only in some solitary small sites can reflect an absence or low level of devastation of a mountain grassland ecosystem. Keywords: anthropogenic impact, succession, rhizome segments, mountain meadows,Rumicetum alpini Вивчено індивідуальні (висоту генеративного пагона, довжину сегментів кореневища та їхню кількість на осі наростання) і групові параметри (проєктивне покриття,щільність імматурних особин, генеративних і вегетативних пагонів) клонального високотравного виду – Rumex alpinus у популяціях, що перебувають на різних стадіях антропогенної сукцесії в Карпатах. Цей вид здатний утворювати зімкнені рудеральні угруповання – щавельники (Rumiceta alpini) на угноєному ґрунті біля стійбищ худоби. Видові властивий тривалий онтогенез і наявність довговічних масивних кореневищ, у яких розмір сегментів відображає життєвість особини у минулі роки. Досліджені показники характеризують ступінь антропогенних змін у лучних екосистемах Карпат на різних етапах їх дигресивно-демутаційних перетворень. Значна кількість імматурних особин насіннєвого походження свідчить про молодий вік популяції і служить індикатором дигресивного спрямування змін в екосистемі. Натомість, у сформованих щільних щавельниках особини насіннєвого походження (зокрема імматурні) майже або цілком відсутні, оскільки у самовідновленні переважає вегетативне розмноження. Найвищі індивідуальні і групові параметри R. alpinus відзначено на площах, що зазнають підживлення гноївкою. Припинення господарського впливу призводить до розрідження популяцій та їх поступового згасання. В інвазійних популяціях відзначено послідовне збільшення річних приростів кореневищ, натомість у регресивних – їхнє скорочення. Rumex alpinus є також компонентом деяких корінних непорушених угруповань, де виявляє невисоку життєвість особин і низьку щільність популяцій. Отже, високі значення індивідуальних і групових показників цього виду є індикатором значного порушення території та її низької цінності з природоохоронної точки зору, натомість його нечасте трапляння лише на окремих невеликих ділянках може свідчити про відсутність або незначний ступінь девастації гірської лучної екосистеми. Abstract The germinability of buried seeds changes with time, and the direction and periodicity of these changes differ among plant species. In 116 abundant dicotyledoneous herb species, we investigated the changes in seed germinability that occurred during the 2-year period following burial in the soil. We aimed to establish differences between seeds collected in “anthropogenic” (ruderal, arable land) and “wild” (grassland, forest) habitats. The seeds were buried in a field one month after collection, exhumed at regular intervals and germinated at 25 °C. During the two-year study period, four categories of species-specific patterns of germinability changes were found: seeds demonstrating seasonal dormancy/non-dormancy cycles (31 species), seeds germinating only in the first season after burial (16 species), seeds germinating steadily (38 species) and seeds whose germinability changed gradually, with increasing (7 species) or decreasing (18 species) germinability. The seeds of 6 species did not germinate at all. We found no significant difference in the frequency of these categories between species typical for anthropogenic and wild habitats. The cause for this result may be dramatic human influences (changes of agricultural practices), the pressure of which impedes the development of floras specific for certain habitats, as distinguished by the frequency of species with particular patterns of seed germinability. These frequencies varied among taxa with the growth form, seed mass and flowering phenology of species.

Among the Ramsar sites of Nepal, Ghodaghodi Lake Complex (GLC) is a biodiversity hot spot. This study was carried out to assess the status and diversity of terrestrial plants in GLC. Employing purposive sampling, altogether 38 plots were taken along the right hand side of the foot trails around the GLC. Collected data were analyzed using formulas and Important Value Index (IVI) was calculated. A total of 50 terrestrial species from 27 families were recorded, among which 35 were trees, 8 shrubs, and 7 herbs. Terminalia tomentosa (Saj) has highest IVI (46.53) among tree species. Similarly, Aerva lanata (Khari) has highest IVI (54.13) among herb species and Calotropis gigantea (Aank) has highest IVI (68.56) among the shrub species. The family Fabaceae family (n=7) represented the maximum numbers of plants species followed by Moraceae family. Int. J. Appl. Sci. Biotechnol. Vol 9(1): 38-44

The ability of three herbaceous plants (Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC., Eruca vesicaria L. and Raphanus raphanistrum L.) from Iberian wood pastures to reduce Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands pathogen populations through allelopathic relationships is studied. The inhibitory capacity of their aqueous root extracts (AREs) on mycelial growth and production of P. cinnamomi reproductive structures is analysed in vitro. In addition, Quercus seedlings were grown in infested by P. cinnamomi-soils and with the presence or absence of allelopathic and susceptible herb species to the pathogen to assess the defensive chemical response of Quercus seedlings through their leaf phenolic compounds. Results show a strong inhibitory capacity of AREs on P. cinnamomi activity in vitro and a protective effect of these herb species on Quercus plants against P. cinnamomi in vivo. D. tenuifolia would be especially suited for biological control in the pathogen suppression.
