A new species of free-living marine nematode, Diplolaimella ariakensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Monhysteridae) from the Ariake Sea, Japan

Summary A new species of free-living marine nematode, Diplolaimella ariakensis n. sp., is described from a muddy tidal flat of the Ariake Sea, southern Japan. Diplolaimella ariakensis n. sp. differs from its congeners by the following: presence of ocelli, absence of denticles in the buccal cavity, a long tail (11-14 cloacal body diam., c = 3.2-4.0 in male, 17-21 anal body diam., c = 2.9-3.4 in female), spicules as long as 1.4-1.8 cloacal body diam., gubernaculum 0.4-0.5 cloacal body diam. long with a dorsocaudal apophysis 0.5-0.7 cloacal body diam. long, presence of a precloacal supplement, absence of postcloacal papillae, presence of seven pairs of body pores in male, and the anterior position of the vulva (V = 43-46). A dichotomous key to Diplolaimella species is provided. Almost full-length 18S rRNA and partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences were determined for D. ariakensis n. sp. A maximum likelihood tree of 18S sequences supported a close relationship between D. ariakensis n. sp. and D. dievengatensis.

A new species of free-living marine nematode is described from Itapuã beach, northeast of Brazil. Pomponema veronicae sp. n. differs from other species of Pomponema by having buccal cavity with large pointed dorsal tooth, two subventral teeth and pairs of denticles, gubernaculum with two L-shaped lateral plates and having a membrane at its distal end that connects to L-shaped plate, and presence of a ventral orifice at distal end of L-shaped plates. It also differs from other species in the size of spicules and gubernaculum. The new species is considered most closely related to Parapomponema species because of the L-shaped lateral plates of gubernaculum, but the taxonomic status of Parapomponema was reviewed and Parapomponema and Propomponema are now synonymized with Pomponema. Pomponema cyatholaimoides is considered as a species inquirendum and Pomponema carinatum is accepted as Pomponema loticum. An updated identification key to species of Pomponema is included.

A new species of Setostephanolaimus Tchesunov, 1994, S. longiseta sp. nov. was discovered in an intertidal sand beach along the Rizhao coast of the Yellow Sea. It is characterized by its long and slender body, long cephalic setae (longer than 20 µm and 16 µm in males and females, respectively) and subcephalic setae, long spicules (longer than 90 µm), gubernaculum with dorsal hooked apophyses, along with presence of 10–12 tubular precloacal supplements in males. Updated dichotomous key for species of the genus Setostephanolaimus is also given.

A new species, Endeolophus skeneae sp. nov., epibiotically associated with the gastropod Skenea profunda, is described from light microscope and scanning electron microscope observations. The new species is characterized by homogeneous ornamentation of the cuticle with annules with very fine and numerous longitudinal ridges, equally distributed around the body, subcuticular discontinuity in cuticle pattern along the lateral sectors of the body, relatively long body (1.1–1.6 mm) and relatively long tail (141–188 μm, c' = 7.5–11.4), short (19–22 μm) L-shaped spicules with ventrally bent blade and simple plate-like gubernaculum without apophysis. Symbiotic associations between aquatic nematodes and molluscs are discussed, with special emphasis on Dreissena polymorpha, zebra mussels. It is suggested that nematodes find food and shelter in the mantle cavity of the bivalve molluscs, and in the umbilicus and aperture of the gastropods, but to reveal the exact mechanisms of symbiotic associations of nematodes with aquatic molluscs requires further research.

A new free-living marine nematode species from marine sediments in the East China Sea, is described here as Perspiria boucheri sp. nov. The new species is characterized by amphideal fovea surrounded partially by body annulations; four cephalic setae stout; conical buccal cavity with a minute dorsal tooth and two ventrosublateral teeth; pharynx with a pyriform terminal bulb; tail elongated, conical with 3/4 posterior cylindrical portion which having distinct coarse annulations; spicules strongly curved with narrow ventral velum, handle-shaped proximally; gubernaculum canoe-shaped, without apophysis. The new species differs from the most similar species Perspiria striaticaudata (Timm, 1962) by strongly curved spicules with handle-shaped proximal end, gubernaculum without dorsal apophysis and relatively shorter tail. Updated key to all species of Perspiria is provided.

Two new free-living marine nematode species of the genus Paracomesoma and genus Metacomesoma belonging to family Comesomatidae are described from the sublittoral sediment of the East China Sea. Paracomesoma zhangi sp. nov. is characterized by cuticle with fine transverse rows of dots, without lateral differentiation; buccal cavity with three small teeth; cephalic setae 13.5 μm long; multispiral amphideal fovea with three turns; spicules slender and elongated with thick cuticularized proximal end; gubernaculum plate-like without apophysis; 26 minute precloacal supplements. Metacomesoma macramphida sp. nov. is characterized by very small buccal cavity without teeth; inner and outer labial sensilla papilliform; four cephalic setae 1.5 μm long; multispiral amphideal fovea large, with 4.5 turns; spicules slender and elongated, with cephalated proximal end and finger-shaped distal end; gubernaculum plate-like, without apophysis; precloacal supplements absent. An updated dichotomous key for the identification of the males of the species of Paracomesoma is provided.

Actus hagiangensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Vietnam. Females of the new species are characterized by medium body size (L = 1.1–1.4 mm), barrel shaped buccal cavity of medium size (26–31 x 13–15 µm) with dorsal tooth apex located 75–81% of buccal cavity length from base and two longitudinal subventral rows, each with four rasp-like denticles; reproductive system didelphic-amphidelphic, vagina short with distinct par refringens vaginae, sclerotized pieces globular in optical section; tail elongate-conoid, slightly ventrally arcuate, with three caudal glands and prominent spinneret. Male with spicules 46 µm in length, and slender, slightly curved gubernaculum, 12 µm long, without accessory piece. This is the first report of a male specimen of the genus Actus. The new species is close to A. salvadoricus but differs by the larger buccal cavity, more anterior position of the dorsal tooth apex and more rounded vaginal sclerotized pieces.

A new species of mouthless and gutless free-living marine nematode, Astomonema southwardorum sp. nov., the dominant species from a methane seep pockmark in the North Sea, is described and illustrated. The new species is distinguished by its combination of short cephalic and cervical setae, with the latter being sparsely and irregularly distributed, and also in male specimens by its arrangement of precloacal and caudal setae and its postcloacal papillae. The genus Astomonema Ott, Rieger, Rieger & Enderes, 1982, is rediagnosed. Astomonema brevicauda (Vitiello, 1971) Vidakovik & Boucher, 1987, is considered to be a species inquirenda.
