The second species of the cnemidolestid genus Piesbergopterum from the Upper Carboniferous of Avion, Northern France (Archaeorthoptera: Cnemidolestidae)

The Palaeozoic archaeorthopteran order Cnemidolestodea Handlirsch, 1937 (sensu Béthoux, 2005; not sensu Aristov, 2014) currently comprises only the family Cnemidolestidae Handlirsch, 1906. They are easily characterized by the presence of a more or less triangular area delimited by the vein MA and the first anterior fork of MP+CuA+CuPa, this last vein having several parallel posterior branches. Dvořák et al. (2021) listed the included genera, and described the new genus and species Piesbergopterum punctatum from the Moscovian of Piesberg (Germany), characterized by the presence of a pattern of rounded spots in numerous cells all over the forewings. Nel & Poschmann (in press) noticed that the Cnemidolestidae show an important diversity of patterns of coloration on their forewings, possibly related to cryptic behaviors in the vegetation.

The family Syntonopteridae was named by Handlirsch in 1911 for a new genus and species, Syntonoptera schucherti, from the Upper Carboniferous of Mazon Creek, Illinois. Although the unique specimen on which the species was based consisted of only a wing fragment, the presence of several intercalary, triad veins was of unusual interest. During the 75 years that have passed since then, only six additional specimens of the family have been found (Carpenter, 1938, 1944; Richardson, 1956), all of them in the Mazon Creek beds. The latest of these specimens was sent to me for study by Dr. E. S. Richardson, Jr., a few months before his death, and I have only recently had the opportunity to study it and prepare illustrations. While working on this fossil, I decided to reexamine at the same time the other five specimens in the family known to me. A review of these specimens is included here, followed by revised diagnoses of the family and of the two known genera.

A new palaeodictyopterid, Aviobreyeria gracilis gen.n., sp.n., is described from an outcrop of Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian C/D) deposits at Avion in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais department (France). This new taxon is placed in the family Breyeriidae based on a comparison of the pattern of venation in its forewing venation with that of other breyeriids and possibly related genera within the Breyerioidea. In addition, wings of different immature instars of palaeodictyopterids from the same strata with a similar pattern of venation but differing in having an enlarged RP and a broader anal area (supposed hind wings) were also tentatively attributed to Breyeriidae gen. et sp. indet.. These wings have a roughly identifiable venation and exhibit the gradual development of wings through different ontogenetic stages and their position on the thorax, which is sparsely documented for Paleozoic insects. Discovery of immature and adult stages of palaeodictyopterids in the same layers also indicates they lived in similar habitats.

AbstractThe definition of the family Evaniidae is revised and Cretevaniidae are synonymised with Evaniidae based on evidence derived from recently described Mesozoic taxa and a new genus and species, Lebanevania azari, described here from Lebanese amber. A fore leg with a long trochanter and a 12-segmented antenna are autapomorphies of the new genus. A large, high and wide head and a high and short mesosoma are derived characters shared with other Evaniidae. The new genus also has complete fore wing venation and lacks a tubular petiole, which are ground plan features of the Evanioidea. A cladistic analysis of fossil and extant members of the superfamily Evanioidea and notes on fossil taxa are presented.

A fragmentary specimen of pterosaur originally assigned to the genus Pterodaustro Bonaparte, 1970 is reassessed. The presence of a sagittal dorsal cranial crest on a fragment of nasopreorbital arcade with linear vertical trabeculae and the occurrence of alveolar protuberances on the os dentale indicate the new specimen has similarities with crested pterodactyloid pterosaurs of the family Ctenochasmatidae, and with members of the Dsungaripteridae. The presence of alveolar protuberances allows us to assign the specimen to the Dsungaripteridae. It forms the basis of a new genus and species, Domeykodactylus ceciliae.

An exceptionally well-preserved silicified bivalve from the Upper Permian of Texas is described and assigned to a new genus and species,Cassiavellia galtarae, placed in the family Bakevelliidae. The species represents one of the earliest and best characterized unequivocal occurrences of the multivincular ligament in the superfamily Pterioidea. The silicified material provides a wealth of information on the morphology of inadequately known Paleozoic pterioideans, including hitherto undescribed aspects of the larval shell, auricular sulcus, muscle scars, and dental ontogeny. The discovery of the condyle-fossa complex on the anteroventral shell margin, a feature previously undescibed in Bivalvia, raises the question of the homology and taxonomic significance of the problematic subumbonal ridge-like structures in Pterioidea. In life,C. galtaraewas probably an epifaunal right-pleurothetic bivalve, byssally attached to hard or raised flexible substrata. In addition toC. galtarae, another new species,C. nadkevnae, is placed inCassiavellia.

A new asellotan isopod of the family Protojaniridae Fresi, Idato & Scipione, 1980 is described from freshwater springs in the Osorno province, Los Lagos region, southern Chile. Wiyufiloides osornoensis gen. & sp. n. is the third South American protojanirid species and the first known groundwater isopod in Chile. The new genus and species is principally characterized by the presence of a vestigial antennal scale, a strongly subchelate pereiopod I and the absence of an apical lobe on the protopod of pleopod II. The new taxon is described in detail and figures are given.

The glyptocystitoid rhombiferan Sprinkleocystis ektopios new genus and species is described from the Middle Ordovician (Caradoc) Benbolt Formation of Tennessee. This species is characterized by having four ambulacra bearing only terminal brachioles, the absence of lateral 5, and protuberant pectinirhombs and periproct. Many of its features are considered typical of the family Cheirocrinidae whereas others are more characteristic of the Glyptocystitidae. Its small size and simple ambulacral and pectinirhomb structures suggest a paedomorphic evolutionary origin, and its thecal morphology further suggests that the validity of a separate Cheirocrinidae and Glyptocystitidae may need reevaluation.

A new genus and species of Cyclopoida is described; Arctocyclopina pagonasta is found inhabiting the arctic sea ice. Comparison is made with Cyclopina gracilis Claus, with which it may be confused.

A new genus and species of the family Paradoxosomatidae from southern part of West Bengal, India is described. The new genus Manikidesmus gen. n. is diagnosed by combination of following characters: reduced paranota, distinct pleural keel, unpaired sternal lamella on 5th sternite, prefemur with setal brush, setal brush on tibia and tarsus in male, lamina medialis long straight with a curved hook, expanded post femoral lamina with a spine and tibiotarsus with a spine on the distofemoral process. The genus is distinguished from its Indian congeners by one or more diagnosed characters. In Manikidesmus suriensis, sp. n. tibia and tarsus bear setal brush in male (vs. absent in Oxidus and Chondromorpha), gonopod femur short, flat and without post femoral demarcation (vs. long, thin cylindrical with post femoral demarcation in Polydrepanum and Orthomorpha), tibiotarsus of gonopod long and a spine on the distofemoral process (vs. short and without spine in Anoplodesmus). In Kronopolites, coxa of gonopod densely bristled, collum with two rows of long bristles, femur long, slender and with a spine. All these characters are absent in the present genus. In Streptogonopus, gonopod femorite is distinctly demarcated from post femorite region and solenomere is twisted with solenophore but in the present species, femorite is not be separated from post femorite region and solenomere is free from solenophore.
