En 1917 se le encargó al arquitecto británico sir Edwin Lutyens que hiciera diseños para los cementerios de guerra en el continente. El resultado fue casi 1000 cementerios y monumentos diseñados por Lutyens y otros arquitectos en Bélgica, norte de Francia y varios lugares de Asia. Bajo el liderazgo del director del Museo Británico, los arquitectos optaron por un estilo común, con la libertad de hacer variaciones individuales para cada cementerio relacionado con su contexto. Como resultado de estas dos ideas opuestas, hay dos elementos principales en cada cementerio, la ‘Piedra de Guerra’ diseñada por Lutyens y la Cruz del Sacrificio de Blomfield. Already in 1917, the British architect sir Edwin Lutyens was asked to make designs for warcemeteries on the continent. In the end this resulted in almost 1000 cemeteries and monuments designed by Lutyens and other architects in Belgium, Northern France and other locations in Asia. Under leadership of the director of the British Museum, the architects have chosen for a common style, with the freedom to make individual variations for each cemetery related to the site. As a result of two opposing ideas there are two main elements on each cemetery, the War Stone designed by Lutyens and the Cross of Sacrifice by Blomfield. For the soldiers which were not found huge monuments were erected with their names on walls as their only surviving memory. The smaller cemeteries were designed by young architects who were in the army during the war. There are headstones instead of crosses for each grave due to the different religious background of the soldiers. For Lutyens the concept of a cemetery was based on the idea of green cathedral, a church in the open air, surrounded by trees as columns. For this idea he took advice from the well-known landscape architect Getrude Jekyll. Because of the maintenance by de Commonwealth War Graves Commission Still the cemeteries are still in perfect state and play an important role in the remembrance of the First World War.

To assess the prevalence of COVID-19 in people living with HIV (PLWHIV), we performed an epidemiological survey from 1 April through 1 August 2020 in an HIV reference center in Northern France. PLWHIV completed a questionnaire about risk exposures and symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and performed a SARS-CoV-2 serology. Among the 600 PLWHIV included, 16 have been infected with SARS-CoV-2. Symptoms consistent with COVID-19 were frequent both in SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative patients (67% vs. 32%, p = 0.02). Among SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, one (6%) has been hospitalized and five (31%) have been asymptomatic. Close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case was the only factor associated with COVID-19 acquisition (40% vs. 13%, p = 0.01). The prevalence of COVID-19 in PLWHIV was 2.5%, half of the overall population estimate after the first wave of the pandemic in France. In conclusion, proportion of asymptomatic COVID-19 was high in PLWHIV. The prevalence of COVID-19 in PLWHIV was two times lower than in the general population.

The new Archaeorthoptera Duquesnia gallica gen. et sp. nov. Nel & Roques, is described from the upper Carboniferous of Northern France. It shows several putative synapomorphies with the three genera Contracladus Dvořák et al., 2021 (Pennsylvanian of Germany), Nugonioneura (lower Permian of USA), and Avionugonioneura from the Moscovian of Avion (France).

The Anglo-Belgo-Paris Basin, historical cradle of the Paleogene stratigraphy since the XVIIIth century, is known by the presence of very specific so-called “Sparnacian” deposits (very diverse and laterally highly variable, predominantly lagoonal to terrestrial facies), which encompass the short stratigraphic interval of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Due to the insufficient paleontological record, the “Sparnacian” succession of the Paris and Dieppe-Hampshire Basins still needs a robust chronostratigraphic correlation with other Paleogene records worldwide. In order to refine the stratigraphy of the Thanetian-Lower Ypresian succession in northern France a number of cores and outcrop sections have been investigated palynologically. As a result, an updated version of the Dinoflagellate cyst zonation for the Paris and Dieppe Basins is proposed and contains six new or revised Biozones for this stratigraphical interval: Alisocysta margarita, Apectodinium hyperacanthum, Apectodinium-extreme acme, Biconidinium longissimum-acme, Dracodinium astra, and Axiodinium lunare/Stenodinium meckelfeldense. Based on combined bio-, litho- and chemostratigraphic data, it appears that the dinocyst assemblages, corresponding to the PETM event interval (“Sparnacian” deposits, Soissonnais and upper Mortemer Formations with the most negative 13δCorg values between -27 and -32 ‰ PDB), are characterized by an extreme acme of Apectodinium spp. (70-98%) in both basins, sometimes alternating with an extreme acme of a few gonyaulacoid groups in the Dieppe Basin. Dinocyst assemblages from the PETM interval contain a significant number of atypical, longer specimens of Apectodinium parvum, which could represent an ecological onshore substitute of species Axiodinium augustum in the Paris and Dieppe-Hampshire Basins. The establishment of a new Biconidinium longissimum-acme Zone suggests the absence of an important stratigraphical hiatus previously inferred for the Paris Basin.

The Palaeozoic archaeorthopteran order Cnemidolestodea Handlirsch, 1937 (sensu Béthoux, 2005; not sensu Aristov, 2014) currently comprises only the family Cnemidolestidae Handlirsch, 1906. They are easily characterized by the presence of a more or less triangular area delimited by the vein MA and the first anterior fork of MP+CuA+CuPa, this last vein having several parallel posterior branches. Dvořák et al. (2021) listed the included genera, and described the new genus and species Piesbergopterum punctatum from the Moscovian of Piesberg (Germany), characterized by the presence of a pattern of rounded spots in numerous cells all over the forewings. Nel & Poschmann (in press) noticed that the Cnemidolestidae show an important diversity of patterns of coloration on their forewings, possibly related to cryptic behaviors in the vegetation.

Barred macrotidal beaches are affected by continuous horizontal displacements of different hydrodynamic zones associated with wave transformation (shoaling, breaker and surf zones) due to significant tide-induced water level changes. A series of wave and current meters, complemented by a video imagery system, were deployed on a barred beach of northern France during a 6-day experiment in order to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of wave-induced processes across the beach. Wave and current spectral analyses and analyses of cross-shore current direction and asymmetry resulted in the identification of distinct hydrodynamic processes, including the development of infragravity waves and offshore-directed flows in the breaker and surf zones. Our results revealed a high spatial variability in the hydrodynamic processes across the beach, related to the bar-trough topography, as well as significant variations in the directions and intensity of cross-shore currents at fixed locations due to the horizontal translation of the different hydrodynamic zones resulting from continuous changes in water level due to tides.
