A new species of Campomanesia (Myrtaceae) from Bahia, Brazil, and its relationships with the C. xanthocarpa complex

Results of studies with multiple approaches involving a species complex which includes Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Myrtaceae) indicate that specimens collected in Morro do Chapéu, the northern region of the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, are distinct from those distributed farther south in Brazil. A description, comments, distribution map and an illustration of the new species, C. costata, are provided herein.

A new species of Astyanax from the upper rio Paraguaçu basin, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, is described. Astyanax sincora shares characters currently used to define the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, as highest body depth approximately at vertical through pectoral-fin midlength and a low number of branched anal-fin rays (13–17). It differs from its congeners by a combination of characters, including eight branched dorsal-fin rays, six branched pelvic-fin rays, presence of bony hooks in pectoral and anal fins of males, dark midlateral line or stripe initiating posteriorly to the vertically elongate humeral blotch, and by the presence of 30–35 scales in the median longitudinal series. The generic positioning of the new species and some polymorphic morphological characters in Astyanax are briefly discussed. Stylotrichium is a small genus in which all the five species are restricted to the rocky field vegetation (campo rupestre) in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia state, Brazil. From recent field collections in the area we have recognized a new species based on morphology. Stylotrichium hortensiae is distinguished by laminae oblanceolate to oblong (3.5–8 × 1–3 cm), greater number of flowers (35–45), anther connective appendage as long as wide, style 6.5 mm long, and pappus 1–1.5 mm long. A species description, illustrations, a key to the species, comments, and a distribution map are provided.

In the course of a taxonomic revision of Miconia sect. Lima, we discovered a previously undescribed species, Miconia paralimoides, from the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic. This species is part of the Miconia lima species complex, and is most similar morphologically to Miconia limoides. We illustrate and provide a distribution map of the species, as well as a key to distinguish M. paralimoides from other members of the Miconia lima complex, i.e., species with very well-developed, bulla-based hairs on the adaxial leaf surface, which mostly or completely cover the areoles.

Piptocarpha longipedunculata is a new species that is endemic to the São Paulo state in Brazil and occurs in the northern region of Serra do Mar. It is classified as endangered (EN) due to its limited geographic distribution. The species grows in areas of Ombrophilous Dense Forest, riparian forests and forest edges of Atlantic Forest Domain. It resembles Piptocarpha axillaris and Piptocarpha macropoda in its overall appearance, but differs mainly by its long pedunculated capitula with few flowers. Its characteristics and relationships within the genus are discussed here. Illustrations and a distribution map are also provided.

The genus Manfreda (Asparagaceae) contains 35 species. A species complex includes plants similar to M. gutttata, which are characterized by the protrusion of the ovary into the perigone tube. This feature was found in specimens recently collected in western Mexico. After a morphological analysis, we found that some of the plants differ from the other species in this complex. Hence, we describe a new species named M. occidentalis morphologically similar to M. planifolia but can be distinguished from it by the oblong-ovoid corm, channeled leaves, which are papillate on both sides, perigone 1.8–2.5 cm long, funnel-shaped, yellowish and light purple striate, perigone tube 0.3–0.7 × 0.2–0.4 cm, filaments adnate to the perigone and arising 0.3–0.7 cm above the ovary apex, anthers 0.9–1.1 cm long, and style 2.1–3.5 cm long, exceeding the perigone tube by 1.8–3 cm at anthesis. Manfreda occidentalis also resembles M. chamelensis; however, phenologic asynchrony is a notable difference between them as well as the shape of the leaves and the length and shape of perigone tube and lobes. A distribution map, photographs, and a key to identify species of Manfreda which grow in western Mexico accompany the description.

A new species of Abarema from Brazil is described and illustrated. The new species is endemic to Morro do Chapéu, Chapada Diamantina, in the state of Bahia. Abarema diamantina shares morphological affinities with A. cochliacarpos by having a capitate raceme, strongly lenticelate branches, and median-basal pleurogram. However, there are remarkable vegetative and reproductive morphological characters which distinguish the two taxa. Here a description of the new species and illustrations are presented; a distribution map, and comments highlighting the differences between the closely related species are discussed.

The Onthophagus fuscus Boucomont, 1932 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Onthophagini) species complex has a total of eight species, one of which is a new species (Onthophagus orizabensis new species) and three are elevated from the subspecies level (O. canescens Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new rank; O. mycetorum Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new rank; O. parafuscus Zunino & Halffter, 2005 new rank). Onthophagus navarretorum Delgado & Capistan, 1996 is included, while Onthophagus semiopacus has been removed from the species complex. The distribution map and key for the identification of species in this species complex are updated. Habitat preferences, ecological tolerance, and the restriction of this species complex to the mountains of the Mexican Transition Zone are discussed.

Stachytarpheta atkinsiae, belonging to the Radlkoferiana group from the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia state Brazil, is here described. It is a red-flowered species, and unusual in being a large, much-branched shrub, with densely lanate indumentum. The species shows similarities with S. froesii and S. radlkoferiana, but differs from both vegetative and floral characters.We provide a full description of the species, together with illustrations, a conservation status assessment, and a distribution map.

Pleroma rubrum (Melastomataceae, Melastomeae), a new shrubby species endemic to rocky outcrops of Chapada Diamantina, northeastern Brazil, is here described, illustrated and compared with closely related taxa. The new taxon is easily distinguished, within the Tibouchina pereirae species complex, by its quadrangular distal branches with a crown of long hirsute trichomes around nodes, leaves elliptic-lanceolate with reddish margins and petioles, reddish inflorescence and bracteoles, colored stipitate glands on all reproductive structures, except the pedoconnectives, involucral bracteoles, and urceolate capsules.

Abstract—Justicia rubrobracteata, a new species from northeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to J. aequilabris due to its shrubby habit, and terminal and axillary spicate inflorescences with red flowers. However, J. rubrobracteata is differentiated mainly by the shape and color of its bracts and bracteoles as well as an orangish macula in the corolla, and a torulose capsule. In addition, J. rubrobracteata is only known from northeastern Brazil, from the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, while J. aequilabris is widely distributed in Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. A table with the main morphological characters of both species is included, as well as photographs, a key to species of Justicia for the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil, a distribution map of both species, and conservation data for the new species.
