In the eighteenth century, José Mariano da Conceição Vellozo in his work Flora Fluminensis, sought to expand the floristic knowledge of Rio de Janeiro and surroundings. This was the first flora of Brazil written and edited by a native naturalist. However, the existence and location of the type material of species described in this work are not known. Furthermore, the protologues associated with the plates of some taxa are not descriptive enough. The nomenclatural revision of the two Vriesea species (basionym: Tillandsia) currently accepted, described in Vellozo’s Flora Fluminensis are presented here. Two epitypes, a new synonym and two excluded names are proposed. In addition, a brief taxonomic history, nomenclatural and taxonomic notes are presented.

Based on critical observations on herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants in the wild from its type locality, we demonstrate that Thalictrum kangdingense, recently described from Kangding county in western Sichuan province, China, is readily distinguishable from T. xinningense by an array of morphological characters but is actually conspecific with T. megalostigma, a species with its type locality also in Kangding. We therefore reduce T. kangdingense to the synonymy of T. megalostigma herein. The morphological distinction between T. baicalense and T. megalostigma is also clarified.

Sematophyllum latifolium Brotherus (1911: 362), known only from the type collection, was originally described by Brotherus (1911) based on a collection made by C.C. Hosseus from Mt. Doi Suthep (Doi Sutäp), in northern Thailand. Pollawatn (2008) revised the family Sematophyllaceae s.l. in Thailand but did not see the type specimen of S. latifolium. During the study of Hosseus’s collections, however, we found two duplicates of type specimens of S. latifolium one located in H-BR and one in M. We found that several critical features of S. latifolium, such as the 1) irregular-pinnately branching habit with the erect flagelliform branches (Fig. 1A), 2) stem and branch leaves strongly differentiated (Fig. 1B−F), and 3) brotherelloid type alar cells often divided into larger hyaline cells towards leaf margins (Fig. 1G), were indistinguishable from those in the type material of Wijkia surcularis (Mitten 1859: 112) Crum (1971: 173), a common species found growing from India to Indochina (Gangulee 1980; Tan & Iwatsuki 1993; Tan & Jia 1999; Jia et al. 2005). Thus, we here propose S. latifolium as a new synonym of W. sucularis. In the protologue, Brotherus (1911) did not designate the holotype, therefore, it is necessary to select a lectotype for S. latifolium ((see Art. 9.11 of the Shenzhen Code (Turland et al. 2017)). We designate Hosseus’s collection (Hosseus s.n.) in H-BR (H) as the lectotype of the name S. latifolium.

This paper comprises a catalogue of the type material of true butterflies (Papilionoidea) kept in the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. The collection contains types of nine nominal species group taxa, described by S. Abadjiev, S. Beshkov, I. Buresch, H. Rebel, and K. Tuleschkow. Lectotypes have been designated for Colias myrmidone balcanica Rebel, 1901, Erebia tyndarus macedonica Buresch, 1919, E. gorge pirinica Buresch, 1919, Euchloe gruneri macedonica Buresch, 1921, Sathyrus [sic] arethusa strumata Buresch, 1919, and Doritis apollinus var. thracica Buresch, 1915. One new synonym has been established: Papilio arethusa arethusa [Denis et Schiffermüller], 1775 = Sathyrus [sic] arethusa strumata Buresch, 1919, syn. nov.

Caudatella columbiella(McDunnough, 1935), new combination, (Insecta: Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae) is removed from synonymy withCaudatella heterocaudata(McDunnough, 1929), and a new junior synonym is recognized, based on comparative examination of type material and larval exuviae associated with adults from the type locale ofC. columbiella(=C. californica(Allen and Edmunds, 1961), new status, new synonym).Caudatella circia(Allen and Edmunds, 1961), new status, is recognized as a strict specific synonym ofC. heterocaudata(McDunnough, 1929) (=C. circia(Allen and Edmunds, 1961), new synonym). A neotype is designated forCaudatella hystrix(Traver, 1934), based on a specimen collected in Western Montana, USA, during June 2000. Morphological differences between the type specimen ofC. hystrixand the type specimens of its two junior synonyms,Ephemerella cascadiaAllen and Edmunds, 1961, andE. spinosaMayo, 1952, are detailed. An identification key for larvae of the genusCaudatellais included.

A complete list of the type material of Mordellidae described by Achille Costa is provided. Mordellistena picipes Costa, 1854 stat. restit. is restored as a valid species and a diagnostic description of the lectotype is given. Natirrica meridionalis Costa, 1854 is proposed as a new synonym of Mordellistena humeralis (Linnaeus, 1758). Lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for the following taxa: Tomoxia bucephala Costa, 1854; Mordella coronata Costa, 1854 (= Variimorda villosa (Schrank, 1781)); M. interrupta Costa, 1854 (= Variimorda villosa (Schrank, 1781)); M. brevicauda Costa, 1854 (= M. brachyura Mulsant, 1856); M. perspicillata Costa, 1854 (= Mediimorda bipunctata Germar, 1827); M. viridescens Costa, 1859; Variimorda basalis (Costa, 1854); Mordellistena stricta Costa, 1854 (= M. pumila (Gyllenhal, 1810)); M. picipes Costa, 1854; M. confinis Costa, 1854; M. minima Costa, 1854; Natirrica meridionalis Costa, 1854 (= Mordellistena humeralis (Linnaeus, 1758)). The male genitalia of the Variimorda basalis lectotype are illustrated here for the first time. Photographs of the labels are provided for the type specimens.

The Sino-Indian species of the genus Cladopelma Kieffer are reviewed and one new species from China, C. costum sp. n., is described and illustrated as male. The males of C. edwardsi (Kruseman) and C. virescens (Meigen) from China are re-examined. Type material of Cryptotendipes inawaabeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, Harnischia daitoheia Sasa et Suzuki, H. ginzandeeus Sasa et Suzuki, H. inadeeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, H. sibacedea Sasa, Sumita et Suzuki, H. simantocedea Sasa, Suzuki et Sakai from Japan and Cladopelma indicum Bhattacharyay, Duta et Chaudhuri from India are reexamined, and all regarded as new synonyms of C. edwardsi. Cladopelma onogawaprima Sasa is regarded as a new synonym of C. hibaraprima Sasa and the species is transferred to Cryptotendipes as a new combination. Cladopelma kamalanagari Maheshwari et Agarwal from India is transferred to Paracladopelma as a new combination. A key to all known males of Cladopelma is provided.
