Cortinarius khinganensis (Agaricales), a new species of section Illumini from Northeast China

This study presents one telamonioid species new to science based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Cortinarius khinganensis was collected from the Greater Khingan Mountains, Northeast China and it is characterized by hygrophanous, vivid brownish red and striate pileus, white universal veil, and subglobose spores. According to phylogenetic analyses results, C. khinganensis belongs to the section Illumini, which is a lineage distantly related from subgenus Telamonia sensu stricto. Detailed descriptions of the new species and the comparisons with morphologically similar species are provided. The phylogenetic relationships within the section Illumini are also discussed.

A new species, Calocybe decurrens, is illustrated and described in detail based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses. Calocybe decurrens is mainly characterized by its decurrent gills and by its stipe that discolors upon maturation. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrLSU) sequences. The results indicated that its affiliation is in genus Calocybe, where it occupies an isolated position. A full description, color images, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of the new species are provided.

A new species of Gymnopus sect. Androsacei, namely, G. pallipes is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence. It is characterized by marasmioid basidiomata, a dark brown to reddish brown pileus becoming dull white to yellowish grey with age, whitish to pale yellow stipe and presence of rhizomorphs. Phylogenetic analyses support it as a new species within Gymnopus sect. Androsacei. The detailed morphological description, colour photos of basidiomata, and line drawings of microcharacters are presented and delimitation characters from similar species are discussed. A key to the known species of Gymnopus s. str. from China is also provided.

Euphorbia motuogensis M. T. Li, X. Z. Lan, H. P. Deng & W. L. Zheng, sp. nov., a new species from Motuo, Tibet, China, is described and illustrated here. It is closely similar to Euphorbia sikkimensis in having terete root, alternate leaves, well-developed pseudoumbellate inflorescence, cyathium, smooth and glaborus capsule, but Euphorbia motuogensis is clealy distinguishable by its pilose stems, involucral leaves color, secondary involucral leaves absent, cyathophylls number and color, and five similar glands. Furthermore, molecular phylogenetic analyses of sequences from both nuclear ribosomal ITS confirm that this species is distinct from morphologically similar species in this subgenus.

During a faunal survey in southern Xizang, we collected 27 specimens of voles that could not be identified as any knownspecies in the Arvicolinae. These specimens shared the following morphological characteristics, not corresponding withany other arvicoline species: the first lower molar possessed five closed triangles, the third upper molar exhibited eitherfour or three inner angles, and the tails of all specimens measured 30% of the body length. Their proximal baculum of theglans was very sturdy and trumpet-shaped, the distal baculum was tongue-like and sturdy, and the lateral bacula were veryshort. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) geneclustered these specimens as a distinct lineage within the genus Neodon. According to the morphological and moleculardata, we described them as a new species, Neodon linzhiensis. Our phylogenetic analysis strongly supported that Lasio-podomys fuscus, Phaiomys leucurus, Neodon sikimensis, N. irene and the new species formed a monophyletic group, notincluding N. juldaschi. We suggested that L. fuscus and P. leucurus should be transferred to Neodon and that N. juldaschishould be removed from this genus. Following our new delineation of Neodon, we proposed a redefinition of the morphological diagnostic characters of the genus.

A new species, Onnia kesiya, is described from South Vietnam on the basis of morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic evidence. It is characterized by distinct lateral stipe, relatively thin and duplex context, hooked hymenial setae, widest basidiospores among Onnia species, and grows on Pinus kesiya in tropical pine forest. Detailed description with a photo and illustration is provided for the new species, and its relationships with similar species are discussed.

The genus Trichoglossum (Geoglossaceae) is characterized by black, clavate, stipitate apothecia with hymenial setae. We collected T. cf. octopartitum from China and a new species of Trichoglossum from Thailand, the latter named as T. septatum. According to morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS sequence data, T. septatum diverges from other Trichoglossum species. Full descriptions, colour figures, and a phylogenetic tree to show the positions of T. cf. octopartitum and T. septatum are provided, and the two species are compared with allied taxa. The important morphological characteristics of Trichoglossum species are also summarized.

A pyrenochaeta-like species was isolated from soil in rice farms in Mazandaran Province (formerly Tabarestan), Iran. Phylogenetic analyses of SSU, LSU, ITS, β-tubulin and actin sequence data showed that the new collection clustered with species in Pyrenochaetopsis sensu stricto. In morphology, phylogeny and physiological characters, the new strains are distinct from other species, thus, they are introduced as a new species viz. P. tabarestanensis. Illustrations, descriptions and taxonomic notes are provided for P. tabarestanensis. Additionally, the phylogenetic relationships of Pyrenochaeta and Pyrenochaetopsis species in Cucurbitariaceae is discussed.

A new species of rust fungus, Puccinia marrubii sp. nov. is described from Turkey. The new species is the first Puccinia species to be identified on genus Marrubium (Lamiaceae). In order to determine the phylogenetic relationships of the new species, ITS region was amplified by PCR, sequenced, and analyzed. In addition to the ITS region of seven Puccinia species, P. annularis, P. jasmini, P. malvacearum, P. nigrescens, P. phlomidis, P. salviae, and P. serpylli were sequenced for the first time. Phylogenetic analyses performed by using distance, Bayesian methods confirmed that the new rust was closely related to P. serpylli, P. malvacearum, P. salviae, and P. annularis. The diagnostic morphological characteristics of the new species were discussed with the phylogenetically related species.

A new species of Peronosporales: Phytopythium nanjingense, isolated from the lake water of Nanjing in Jiangsu Province of China is described and illustrated based on morphological characters and supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses using ITS rDNA and Cox1 and Cox2 mtDNA sequences. Phytopythium nanjingense is heterothallic and characterized by aquatic habitat, ellipsoid, mostly obpyriform to ovoid-obpyriform, internally or internally nested proliferating sporangia with conspicuous apical papillae, smooth oogonia, hypogynous antheridia, filamentous antheridial cells, and plerotic or nearly plerotic and thin-walled oospores (0.5–1.6 µm). Differences between the new species and phylogenetically related and morphologically similar species are discussed.

Russula ahmadii, a new species and its ectomycorrhiza are described and illustrated from coniferous forests of Pakistan, based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic data. The species is characterized by small to medium size basidiomata, a dark brown to greyish brown, tuberculate striate, and depressed pileus with dark brown spots in the centre, a chambered stipe having brownish patches towards the base, globose to subglobose amyloid basidiospores, having covered with bifurcated verrucose ornamentation connected by partial reticulum. Its ectomycorrhiza is typical of the genus Russula and is characterized by the presence of abundant lageniform cystidia with a straight neck and branched emanating hyphae with frequent clamp connections. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and LSU sequences support erection of the new species. Phylogenetic network analysis revealed its close position to R. pectinatoides. ITS sequences from ectomycorrhiza of Cedrus deodara also clustered with sequences from basidiomata of R. ahmadii confirming its mycorrhizal status. Phylogenetic analyses and morphological features placed the new species in R. section Ingratae.
