Morphology and molecular phylogeny reveal two new species in Russula sect. Ingratae from China

Two new species of Russula are described and illustrated in this paper. Russula clavulus is recognised by a pale yellow pileus centre, white margin with tuberculate striation, white to pale lamellae with small pale yellow spots, white to light yellow spore print, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid spores with short or long ridges and hymenial cystidia on lamellae sides that are mainly subclavate or fusiform. Russula multilamellula is morphologically characterised by the brownish orange to hazel pileus centre and satin white to yellowish-white margin with brownish tinge, lamellulae that are usually irregular in length and often anastomosing with lamellae, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid spores with short or long ridges and clavate hymenial cystidia. The combination of morphological features and multigene phylogenetic analyses of ITS-nrLSU-RPB2-mtSSU data indicated that these two new taxa belong to Russula subg. Heterophyllidia sect. Ingratae.

Abstract Two new species from southern China, Russula subpunicea and R. albolutea, were described and illustrated. Russula subpunicea is characterized by a pinkish to dark pink pileus with striations at the margin, white lamellae without lamellulae, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid basidiospores with warts and spines sometimes joined to form a reticulum, hymenial cystidia that are mainly clavate, a suprapellis mainly composed of chains of short inflated cells with attenuated terminal cells and pileocystidia that are mainly clavate and turn reddish in sulfovanillin. Russula albolutea is recognized by a yellowish white pileus with long striations at the margin, a white stipe with a yellowish tinge, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid basidiospores, hymenial cystidia that are mainly clavate and apically often obtuse and turn mauve in sulfovanillin, and a suprapellis mainly consisting of chains of short inflated cells with attenuated terminal cells. In this study, we performed phylogenetic analysis based on the ITS-nrLSU-RPB2-mtSSU dataset. By combining detailed morphological features with multigene phylogenetic evidence, we assigned the new taxa to Russula subsect. Virescentinae.

A couple of forays to the temperate to subalpine regions of the western Himalaya uncovered two new species: Russula rajendrae and R. petersenii. Russula rajendrae (subg. Russula sec. Russula subsect. Russula), is characterized by a pale red to venetian pink or pastel red colored pileus with grayish yellow patches in the center, a white spore print, an acrid taste, and cystidia with variably shaped apices (capitate, rounded, moniliform, appendiculate or pointed) whereas, Russula petersenii (subg. Russula sec. Paraincrustatae subsect. Integrae), is characterized by a white pileus with pale yellow to light yellow patches and a concolorous stipe, white to yellowish white lamellae with 3 series of lamellulae, a white spore print, an acrid taste, basidiospores with isolated warts (sparsely connected in places), and different types of cystidial apices. Macro- and micromorphological descriptions together with illustrations and phylogenetic inferences are presented for both species. Allied taxa (endemic and extralimital) are also compared.

During a survey on diversity of freshwater fungi along a north-south latitudinal gradient in Asia, three fresh specimens of Minimelanolocus were collected from submerged wood in streams in northwestern Yunnan Province, China. Based on their distinct morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data, Minimelanolocus nujiangensis and M. clavatus are described as new species and M. submersus was recollected from Yunnan, China. Illustrations and descriptions with notes of the three species are provided. This study increases the known diversity of Minimelanolocus and enriches freshwater fungal resources.

During an investigation of fungicolous fungi associated with mushrooms in China, four boleticolous fungi were collected from Sichuan Province. Based on the morphological features and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses this study introduces two new species, Hypomyces ampullaris, and H. sichuanensis. The new species are described and illustrated comprehensively and compared with their related fungi. Hypomyces ampullaris is similar to Sepedonium ampullosporum in forming candelabrum-like conidiophores and producing ampulliform conidia but differs from the latter in having shorter phialides and smaller ampulloconidia. Hypomyces sichuanensis is similar to H. chrysospermus, H. microspermus, and Sepedonium laevigatum in forming poorly developed verticills conidiophores and the shape and size of aleurioconidia. However, the asexual spores of H. sichuanensis averaged somewhat smaller than those of H. chrysospermus and S. laevigatum, and larger than that of H. microspermus. Additionally, H. ampullaris and H. sichuanensis distinct from their close relatives in no pigment discoloration of the PDA medium. These species introduced here, improve our understanding of the diversity of Hypomyces, especially of the boleticolous Hypomyces in China.

A survey of freshwater fungi on submerged wood in China and Thailand resulted in the collection of three species in Dictyocheirospora and four species in Dictyosporium including two new species in the latter genus. Morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, LSU and TEF1α sequence data support their placement in Dictyocheirospora and Dictyosporium (Dothideomycetes). An updated backbone tree is provided for the family Dothideomycetes. Descriptions and illustrations of the new taxa and re-collections are provided. Four new combinations are proposed for Dictyocheirospora.

Two new species of Russula subg. Heterophyllidia from Guangdong Province of China were described and illustrated based on morphological characters, and their identity supported by molecular phylogeny. R. luofuensis is morphologically characterized by a grayish yellow to brownish orange pileus center with a purplish gray to grayish magenta margin, a surface that is cracked and broken into small golden-brown patches, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with warts fused in short or long chains and a suprapellis composed of hyphal extremities with inflated, ellipsoid or globose cells and attenuated terminal cell. R. subbubalina is distinguished by the blanched almond to dark salmon pileus that is cracked with age, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with wart fused in short or long chains and frequently connected by line connections, a suprapellis with hyphal ends composed of inflated or ellipsoid cells and attenuated terminal cell, and pileocystidia that are mainly clavate and sometimes with round or ellipsoid appendage. The phylogenetic analyses based on ITS-nrLSU-mtSSU-TEF1 dataset were performed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis. In terms of morphological features and molecular data, the former species belongs to subsect. Virescentinae, whereas the latter comes under subsect. Heterophyllinae.

Two new species of Marasmius secton Sicci are described based on field work conducted in Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, Thailand. Marasmius thailandicus is characterized by small, thin yellowish white basidiomes, ellipsoid basidiospores and dimorphic caulocystidia. Marasmius rongklaensis is distinguished by a conical, velutinous pileus, ellipsoid basidiospores, dimorphic cheilocytidia and pileipellis a hymeniderm with pileosetae. Comprehensive description along with illustrations, photographs, and a comparison with phenetically similar taxa are provided. The taxonomic position has been confirmed by phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) sequences of the ribosomal DNA.

A preliminary phylogeny of Fordiophyton (Melastomataceae) and the description of two new taxa, F. chenii and F. huizhouense, from southern China, are presented here. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that Fordiophyton is monophyletic and the two new species are in this clade of Sonerileae. Fordiophyton chenii is morphologically similar to F. cordifolium. Both taxa have glabrous stems, large, cordate leaves and four-sided petioles, but F. chenii has a very short stem, rosette leaves, hypanthia with dense glandular trichomes, and the shorter stamens with yellow anthers. Fordiophyton huizhouense shares with F. peperomiifolium the short, densely hirsute stem and rosette leaves, but F. huizhouense is characterized by adaxially smooth leaves, lanceolate calyx lobes, and inflated, prolonged connective bases in the longer stamens.

Abstract Two new species producing ascospores of Talaromyces sect.Talaromyces are proposed, namely, T. haitouensi (ex-type AS3.160101 T) and T. zhenhaiensis (ex-type AS3.16102 T). Morphologically, T. haitouensis is featured by moderate growth, green-yellow gymnothecia, orange-brown mycelium, and echinulate ellipsoidal ascospores. T. zhenhaiensis is characterized by fast growth, absent sporulation, cream yellow to naphthalene yellow gymnothecia and mycelium, smooth-walled ellipsoidal ascospores with one equatorial ridge. The proposal of the two new taxa is well supported by individual phylogenetic analyses based on individual sequences of BenA, CaM, Rpb2 and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, and the concatenated BenA-CaM-Rpb2 sequence.

Acervus is a small genus in Pyronemataceae. Most of the species in this genus have been recorded from China. In the present study, two species of Acervus from Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, were investigated by using morphology and DNA sequence data. This paper introduces two new species A. stipitatus and A. globulosus, with morphological descriptions, and compares them with morphologically similar taxa. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses inferred from 28S, TEF1 and RPB2 sequence data strongly support the lineages for taxa of Acervus, corresponding to morphological features. We also provide a summarized comparison of the important morphological characteristics of Acervus species.
