Five new species and three new varieties of Begonia section Casparya endemic to Colombia

Casparya, one of the most species-rich sections of Begonia in the Neotropics with 44 species, is distributed from Costa Rica to Peru, with the highest diversity in the Colombian Andes. The section is morphologically well-differentiated and can be distinguished from other Andean cane-like begonias by the 3-horned fruit and multifid or un-divided styles. Here we describe eight taxonomic novelties for Casparya from Colombia, five species and three varieties, descriptions include illustrations, distribution maps, taxonomic comments, and assessments of conservation status. The five species described here are: Begonia diegoi, Begonia galeanoi, Begonia mamapachensis, Begonia perijaensis, and Begonia vinagrera; and the three new varieties are: Begonia kalbreyerii var. orquidensis, Begonia silverstonei var. brevipetiolata, and Begonia vinagrera var. pomecensis. We also present a taxonomic key for the 32 species of Casparya so far known from Colombia.

Two new species, Passiflora splendida and P. quinonesiae of the section Colombiana from the Andes of Cundinamarca Department (Colombia Eastern Cordillera) are described and illustrated. Passiflora splendida is morphologically similar to P. cremastantha of the series Leptomischae, but can be distinguished by its linear stipules, petioles up to 1.8 cm long, lance-ovate leaves (6–8.5 × 2.5–3.3 cm), flowers with a diameter of 9–11 cm long, sepals and petals with intermediate disposition, both longer than the floral tube, floral tube of 3.2–4.5 cm long and fusiform ovary. Passiflora quinonesiae is similar to the species of series Colombianae, most closely related to P. cuatrecasasii and P. lanata. It differs from P. cuatrecasasii by its terete stem, size of the leaves 4.4–15 × 10.3 cm, elliptic bracts and floral tube 5.2–6 cm long. It differs from P. lanata by its ovate leaves, bracts halfway down the floral tube, elliptical sepals and petals, and elliptical ovary. In addition, a taxonomic key to section Colombiana ser. Colombianae and Leptomischae for Colombia is included and information about the ecology, distribution, and conservation status of P. splendida and P. quinonesiae are discussed.

Scrophularia dianatnejadii Ranjbar & Rahchamani, a new species from Tehran Province in northern Iran, is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. amplexicaulis Benth. and shares with it some diagnostic morphological characters such as habit, plant indument, phyllotaxy, and corolla shape and color. Both species are placed in Scrophularia L. sect. Mimulopsis Boiss. Macro- and micromorphological characters of the two are examined and compared. Pollen morphology of these species is investigated using SEM. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and conservation status of both species are provided.

The old genus Libitia Simon, 1879 of small Andean harvestmen is revisited. The monotypic genus Libitiella Roewer, 1947 is herein considered a junior subjective synonym of Libitia. Accordingly, Libitiella bipunctata (Sørensen, 1932) is restored to the combination Libitia bipunctata. The species Libitia cordata and Libitia bipunctata comb. nov. are redescribed and the new species Libitia gandalf sp. nov. and Libitia iguaque sp. nov. are herein described from Cordillera Oriental of Colombian Andes (Chingaza Natural Park and Iguaque Natural Park, respectively). The species Gonyleptes multimaculatus Wood 1869, currently under the synonymy of L. cordata, is revalidated and transferred to Paecilaemella Roewer, 1925 forming Paecilaemella multimaculata comb. nov., and the species Cynorta itacoaiensis H. Soares, 1970 is herein considered a junior subjective synonym of it. In addition, the second current species of the genus, Libitia fusca (Simon, 1879), is transferred to Metalibitia. Libitia is diagnosed based in genital and external morphology, an identification key of the four species and distribution maps are offered.

Background and Aims: Aristolochia is the largest genus in Aristolochiaceae and is widely distributed in the world. A recent synopsis of Aristolochia in Costa Rica recognized 19 species; nevertheless, recent botanical exploration in southwestern Costa Rica has revealed yet another new species of this genus. Methods: The new species resulted from fieldwork in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas Province. Specimens from several herbaria were examined, as well as the type material of the most morphologically similar species. Comments about its distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status and morphological distinction from related species are provided.Key results: Aristolochia quiricoana, a member of Aristolochia series Thyrsicae, is described and illustrated from the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica, where it is apparently endemic. It is similar to A. ornithorhyncha, from which it is distinguished by its shorter pedicels, wider, oblong perigone limbs with a shorter appendix, and a different floral color pattern.Conclusions: The new taxon described here represents the 22nd species documented in Aristolochia series Thyrsicae, as well as the 20th species of the genus from Costa Rica.

AbstractCopris incertus Say, 1835 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Coprini) has been described as a New World coprophagous scarab distributed from Mexico to Ecuador with large discontinuities in its range between the Yucatán province and Costa Rica. The C. incertus species complex of the Copris minutus (Drury, 1773) species group consists of C. incertus, Copris laeviceps Harold, 1869, and Copris lugubris Boheman, 1858. Based on external morphology and male genitalia, we discovered that multiple species have been classified as C. incertus. Of these species, five are new: Copris amazonicusnew species, Copris brevicornisnew species, Copris davidinew species, Copris moroninew species, and Copris susanaenew species. Herein, we revise the organisation of the C. incertus species complex and propose a new species complex, the C. laeviceps species complex, which includes: C. davidi, Copris igualensis Warner, 1990, and C. laeviceps, formerly included in the C. incertus species complex. We provide an identification key along with species distribution maps, images of habitus, and diagnostic characters.

Two apparently narrow-endemic species of Eugenia are described from the Cabo Frio Center of Plant Diversity in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both present a limited distribution restricted to coastal areas north of Rio de Janeiro. The new species are described and compared with closely related species.  Illustrations, distribution maps and conservation status assessments are also provided. Eugenia gastropogena and Eugenia farneyi are presumably closely related to Eugenia pyriformis and Eugenia malacantha. Eugenia gastropogena can be recognized by its leaves with arched secondary veins not forming a clear marginal vein, subcordate to obtuse leaf bases, petioles 2.1–4.8 mm long, buds 3.5–4 mm long and 2 ovules per locule. E. farneyi can be recognized by having leaves with straight secondary veins that form a single marginal vein running 0.7–1.5 mm from the margin, cuneate leaf bases, petioles 4–6.4 mm long, buds 6.2–8.4 mm long, and 10–12 ovules per locule.

Adenocalymma, with approximately 75 species, is one of the largest genera from tribe Bignonieae (Bignoniaceae). The genus mostly includes yellow-flowered lianas and shrubs that are conspicuous components of the dry and wet Neotropical forests. As part of an ongoing taxonomic and phylogenetic study of this group, we found unusual materials that do not match any of the currently recognized taxa. These materials formed the basis of two new species described here, which are endemic from the Brazilian Atlantic forest: Adenocalymma lineare, and Adenocalymma apetiolatum. Adenocalymma lineare resembles Adenocalymma nervosum on the linear leaflets, but differs in the habit, prophyll morphology, leaflet venation, floral bracts, bracteole morphology and dimensions, corolla color and morphology, anther and stigma position. While Adenocalymma apetiolatum closely resembles Adenocalymma sessile and Adenocalymma subsessilifolium on the sessile leaf insertion and shrubby habit, it differs from both species by the corolla color, indument type and color. Apart from that, Adenocalymma apetiolatum differs from the former by the prophyll morphology, floral bract and bracteole morphology, and the latter by the corolla morphology. These two new taxa are illustrated, and distribution maps are provided here. Notes on the taxonomy, geographic distribution, habitat, and conservation status are also included.

Homollea Arènes (Rubiaceae, subfamily Ixoroideae, tribe Pavetteae) is a genus of shrubs and small trees endemic to western and northern Madagascar. The genus comprises five species occurring in dry deciduous forest, often in limestone areas. The five species are narrow endemics and their conservation status is either Endangered (4 species) or Critically Endangered (1 species). Homollea is characterized by few-flowered, pseudo-axillary, pedunculate inflorescences, well-developed calyces with the lobes much longer than the tube, laterally flattened seeds with a shallow, elongated to linear hilum and entire endosperm, ovules arising from the upper margin of the placenta, and, pollen grains with supratectal elements in the shape of microgemmae. Until now, three species were known and their descriptions are amended. Two further species, H. furtiva De Block sp. nov. and H. septentrionalis De Block sp. nov., are described as new for science. The five species are dealt with in detail: descriptions, distribution maps, conservation assessments, illustrations, lists of exsiccatae and an identification key are given.

The morphological similarities between five new large Argentinomyia species and Talahua fervida Fluke are characterized and presented. Six new species of Argentinomyia (10–12 mm long) are described: Argentinomyia andina Montoya & Wolff, sp. nov. (Colombia), Argentinomyia choachi Montoya, sp. nov. (Colombia), Argentinomyia quimbaya Montoya & Wolff, sp. nov. (Colombia), Argentinomyia huitepecensis Montoya, sp. nov. (México), Argentinomyia puntarena Montoya, sp. nov. (Costa Rica), and Argentinomyia talamanca Thompson, sp. nov. (Costa Rica). The genus Talahua Fluke is re-diagnosed and, Talahua fervida redescribed. A taxonomic key and a comparison of diagnostic characters are presented. Photographs of head, abdominal and wing maculae patterns, as well as illustrations of male genitalia are provided for species identification.

SummaryThe genus Thalictrum L. in New Guinea is revised based on morphological evidence. Full descriptions of the genus and the four taxa recognised are given. Two species are recognised: Thalictrum papuanum, widespread across New Guinea, and a new species described here; T. umbraticola, endemic to west New Guinea. Two new varieties are described: Thalictrum papuanum var. acutisegmentum and T. papuanum var. laticarpellum. One new synonym of Thalictrum papuanum var. papuanum is established: T. papuanum var. oranjense. Keys to the taxa and distribution maps, as well as preliminary conservation assessments, are provided.
