New Findings on Scrophularia sect. Mimulopsis (Scrophulariaceae) from Iran

Scrophularia dianatnejadii Ranjbar & Rahchamani, a new species from Tehran Province in northern Iran, is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. amplexicaulis Benth. and shares with it some diagnostic morphological characters such as habit, plant indument, phyllotaxy, and corolla shape and color. Both species are placed in Scrophularia L. sect. Mimulopsis Boiss. Macro- and micromorphological characters of the two are examined and compared. Pollen morphology of these species is investigated using SEM. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and conservation status of both species are provided.

Verbascum misirdalianum (Scrophulariaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species endemic to central Anatolia, Turkey. In this study, diagnostic morphological characters of this new species and closely related species (V. tossiense) are discussed. Furthermore, comments on habitat, morphology and conservation status are provided and distribution maps presented for the two taxa.

Six species of giant alpha anoles of the genus Dactyloa are known to occur in western Panama: Dactyloa casildae, D. frenata, D. ibanezi, D. insignis, D. kunayalae, and D. microtus. Based on own material collected along the highlands in Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, and Veraguas provinces and the Comarca Ngöbe-Buglé of western Panama, we review their vari-ation in morphological characters and the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene. Our results support all six nominal taxa, but re-veal considerable genetic differentiation between populations of the two highland species, D. casildae and D. microtus, respectively, from different localities. Correlated morphological differences confirm the existence of a cryptic species among populations currently assigned to D. microtus, which we describe as Dactyloa ginaelisae sp. nov. We provide point distribution maps, morphology and color descriptions, photographs in life, conservation status assessments, and an iden-tification key for all seven species.

Stachys ahmet-savranii Doğu & Bağcı sp. nov. (Lamiaceae) from the Niğde (C5 Niğde, Turkey) is described and illustrated. It exhibits general features of the section Infrarosularis. It is closely related to Stachys citrina Boiss. & Heldr. but differs by its slender and unbranched stem; leaves structure; floral leaves equalling or longer than verticillasters; verticillester with 8 - 12 flowered and corolla 10 - 18 mm; Bracteoles reaching nearly middle of calyx tube. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. The geographical distribution of the new species is mapped. Notes are also presented on its ecology, biogeography and conservation status. Iris ferdowsii is described and illustrated as a new species from Khorassan-Kopet Dagh floristic province in NE Iran. It is closely related to the rhizomatous bearded irises of I. sect. Regelia. The species of this section are distributed mainly in the east of Iran, Afghanistan, west of Pakistan and Middle Asia. Diagnostic morphological characters, and notes on distribution, habitat and conservation status of the new species are provided.

A new species, Strigula oleistrata, segregated from S. novae-zelandiae is described. The new species is widely sympatric with Strigula novae-zelandiae from which it is separated by a range of morphological characters and also by its nrDNA ITS sequence. As a result of this segregation, a new circumscription of S. novae-zelandiae is also provided. Comments on the ecology and conservation status of both species, and a revised key to the foliicolous Strigula species of New Zealand are provided.

The genus Helosciadium has six species of which three have been identified in Portugal: H. nodiflorum, frequent and abundant in much of the territory, and H. inundatum and H. repens, with a scattered distribution in Portugal. In the present study, a new species, Helosciadium milfontinum, a seriously threatened plant endemic, rare and scarce that grows in the temporary ponds of the Vicentinan Coastal District is described and illustrated. Morphological characters and molecular analysis of nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and plastid regions (matK, rps16-trnK and trnL-F) confirm the existence of this new taxon. Conservation status and taxonomic relationships of the new species are examined.

A new species of Pentanema, P. kurdistanicum is described and illustrated from Kurdistan, west of Iran. The new species was found scattered among rocks in the subalpine zone of S Marivan, in a low number of individuals. The new species is compared with the nearest allies, P. flexuosum and P. prasinurum. The phytochoria, morphological characters, ecology, conservation status, distribution map and phenology of the new species are presented.

We describe a new species of Eremias lacertid from the Alborz Mountain range in northern Iran (Tehran Province). Eremias papenfussi n. sp. is part of the Eremias subgenus (or morphotype) by virtue of lacking lateral fringes on the fourth toe and color pattern. It can be further differentiated from previously described species assigned to this morphotype by the absence of distinctly keeled upper caudal scales, gular scales that do not extend to the second inframaxiallary scales, color pattern, and scale counts. Eremias papenfussi is found on rocky mountain slopes of the Alborz where it is presumed to have a much broader distribution than demonstrated by the available specimens. Of the 15 species of Eremias known from Iran, E. papenfussi is the fifth species known to inhabit rocky mountain slopes along with E. strauchi, E. lalezharica, E. montanus and E. novo.

Species of the genus Hebius Thompson, 1913 with 17 or 19 dorsal scale rows at midbody and an overall dark venter are reviewed, including the two species previously known as Parahelicops annamensis Bourret, 1934 and Pararhabdophis chapaensis Bourret, 1934. Specimens with 17 scale rows are morphologically similar to Hebius venningi (Wall, 1910), which is here redefined based on external morphological characters such as scalation, and dorsal and ventral patterns. Consequently, Natrix nigriventer Wall, 1925 is resurrected from its synonymy with Hebius venningi, whereas Natrix taronensis Smith, 1940, previously considered a subspecies of H. venningi or a full species by some authors but without justification, is here confirmed to full species status. Another group of species, mostly similar in coloration and pattern to the H. venningi group but with 19 dorsal scale rows, includes H. modestus (Günther, 1875), H. deschauenseei (Taylor, 1934) and a new species which is described herein based on specimens from northern Vietnam, southern China and north-eastern Thailand due to distinct morphological differences. We also provide updated taxonomic accounts for the species of this group, including an identification key and distribution maps.

A new species Strobilanthes orbiculata is described from the southern parts of the Western Ghats, India. It is a semelparous species found in the shola forests in Vattavada and Kundala in Idukki district of Kerala. Notes on pollen morphology, distribution, phenology, conservation status and photographic illustrations are given. Moreover, a short note on a narrow endemic taxon Strobilanthes matthewiana is also provided.
