A review of the Pagurixus boninensis species group, with descriptions of six new species (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Paguridae)

McLaughlin & Haig (1984) divided the genus Pagurixus Melin, 1939 in two informal species groups on the basis of the presence or absence of setal row(s) on the ventral surface of the ultimate segment of the antennular peduncle. The first group, characterized by the presence of the setal rows, is herein named the P. boninensis species group, and the second, characterized by the absence of setal rows, is named the P. anceps group. In this paper, species of the P. boninensis group are reviewed. Thirteen species are recognized in this species group, of which six are new: Pagurixus laevimanus (Ortmann, 1892), P. maorus (Nobili, 1906), P. boninensis (Melin, 1939), P. tweediei (Forest, 1956), P. festinus McLaughlin & Haig, 1984, P. nomurai Komai & Asakura, 1995, P. pulcher Osawa, Fujita & Okuno, 2006, P. brachydactylus n. sp. , P. carinimanus n. sp. , P. concolor n. sp. , P. paulayi n. sp. , P. pseliophorus n. sp.  and P. ruber n. sp.  These species are further arranged into two subgroups based on the presence or absence of a lateral ridge on the carpus of the left cheliped. The new species are fully described and illustrated. Redescriptions or updated descriptions and illustrations are given for each previously described species in order to facilitate comparisons. The affinities and important morphological variations of the species are discussed and their overall distributions are updated. Because of the sexual dimorphism exhibited by species of this genus, separate identification keys to males and females are presented.

Two new species of Pagurixus Melin, 1939, P. pulcher and P. longipes, are described from the submarine caves of the Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. These species belong to the different informal species group of the genus characterized by the presence or absence of two distinct, longitudinal rows or series of setae on the ventral surface of the antennular ultimate segment. Pagurixus pulcher is most closely allied to P. nomurai Komai & Asakura, 1995, but is differentiated by the more slender ocular peduncles, setation on the ultimate segment of the antennular peduncle, and shape of the anterior lobe of the sixth thoracic sternite. The extremely long and slender carpus of the left cheliped and dactyli of the ambulatory pereopods clearly distinguish P. longipes from other species belonging to the species group characterized by the absence of longitudinal rows or series of setae on the ventral surface of the antennular ultimate segment.

The Neotropical geometrine genus Oospila Warren, 1897 includes seventy-nine species and was revised by Cook & Scoble (1995). The genus is distinctive in having a row of raised abdominal crests, which are composed of specialized, erect, metallic shining scales. This paper focuses on the integrative morphological and molecular delimitation of the smallest Oospila species. The wing patterns and genitalia structures of males and females are illustrated. Cook & Scoble (1995) distinguished 13 species groups within Oospila. We discuss the species of the Oospila flavilimes species group, the O. stigma species group and O. miccularia species group below, and separate the O. arpata species complex into a group of its own. Nine new species and two new subspecies are described in this paper: O. cristae sp. n. from Ecuador, O. falcata sp. n. from French Guiana, O. pallidaria boliviensis subsp. n. from Bolivia, and O. loreenae sp. n. from Bolivia (flavilimes species group), O. ehakernae sp. n. from Costa Rica, O. similiplaga bolarpata subsp. n. from Bolivia (arpata species group), O. brehmi sp. n. and O. bifida sp. n. both from Bolivia, O. moseri sp. n. from Brazil, O. absaloni sp. n. and O. pipa sp. n. both from Ecuador (miccularia species group). Oospila similiplaga (Warren) (stat. nov.) is raised here from synonymy with O. arpata (Schaus) and O. imula (Dognin) from synonymy with O. miccularia (Guenée), respectively. Oospila agnetaforslundae nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for Oospila marginata Schaus, 1912 (nec Oospila marginata Warren, 1897), raising it to species rank from synonymy of Oospila permagna (Warren, 1909). With this paper, the number of Neotropical Oospila species is raised to 88.

Eight new species, belonging to four species groups of the genus Clubiona Latreille, 1804 are described from both males and females: C. yaoi sp. nov. from the C. apiculata species-group; C. subrama sp. nov. and C. subyaginumai sp. nov. from the C. corticalis species-group; C. quadrata sp. nov., C. subkuu sp. nov. and C. zhengi sp. nov. from the C. hystrix species-group; and C. cheni sp. nov. and C. subquebecana sp. nov. from the C. trivialis species-group. These species are currently known to occur only in Xishuangbanna Rainforest, Yunnan, China.

Description of four new species: Anthaxia (Merocratus) angustata Bílý, sp. nov. (Vietnam), A. (M.) priska Bílý, sp. nov. (Indonesia: Kalimantan), A. (M.) violaceidorsis Bílý, sp. nov. (Indonesia: Kalimantan), and A. (M.) lucifera Plachetka, sp. nov. (The Philippines). Two species-groups are defined within the subgenus: A. (M.) insulaecola Obenberger, 1944 species-group and A. (M.) tricolor Kerremans, 1912 species-group. The sexual dimorphism of certain species is discussed and the distribution of some species are modified including new state records. All new species are illustrated and compared with the most related species.

Three new species of Anaulacomera are described, Anaulacomera (Anaulacomera) mariellae sp. n. and Anaulacomera (Anallomes) arlindoi sp. n., belonging respectively to the Inermis and Lanceolata species group, and Anaulacomera angelinae sp. n., placed as incertae sedis. The individuals were collected at the Iguaçu National Park and adjacent small fragments of Atlantic Forest, in southwestern Paraná state, Brazil. The description was based on external morphology of males. We also present distribution maps for the species of the Inermis and the Lanceolata species groups.

The giant water bug fauna from tropical South America remains poorly known. Three species of Belostoma Latreille (Belostoma fittkaui De Carlo, B. sayagoi De Carlo and B. hirsutum Roback & Nieser) have been cited only a few times in the literature. These three species are remarkable since they represent an extreme variation for the genus, with article II of the labium distinctly shorter than article III. Here, the synonymy of B. hirsutum with B. sayagoi is proposed based on examination of type material and additional specimens. Further, B. fittkaui and B. sayagoi are redescribed, including discussion about comparative morphology with congeners. A new species group is proposed for these species and a key to the Belostoma species groups is provided. Distribution records are also updated.

Eighteen new species of the genus Meleonoma Meyrick are described: M. arcivalvata sp. nov., M. chongqingensis sp. nov., M. curvativa sp. nov., M. curvitaeniana sp. nov., M. dilatifasciata sp. nov., M. fasciptera sp. nov., M. globoidea sp. nov., M. graciliclavata sp. nov., M. grandivalvula sp. nov., M. lunata sp. nov., M. medispinea sp. nov., M. proapicalis sp. nov., M. raphidacantha sp. nov., M. sinuaclavata sp. nov., M. tenuiclavata sp. nov., M. tetrodonta sp. nov. M. ventridentata sp. nov. and M. ventrisinuata sp. nov. The female of M. similifloralis (Wang, 2006) is described for the first time. Images of both adults and genitalia are provided. All species are divided into two species-groups, the dentivalvata species-group and the fasciptera species-group. A key to each group and maps showing the distribution of each group in China are given.

The E. ovina group of species is proposed here to include Edessa ovina Dallas, 1851 from Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina (new records) and Guyana; E. impura Bergroth, 1891 from Brazil and Argentina (new record); E. sahlbergii Stål, 1872 restricted to Brazil; and E. graziae sp. nov. from Brazil and Argentina. The E. ovina group can be identified by the apex of the second pair of wings narrowing distally and by a tumid area on the ventral surface of the pygophore (male genitalia) projected posteriorly. Descriptions, measurements, and illustrations of the metasternal process, external and internal genitalia of male and female are provided. A map with the distribution of the species is presented. The holotype of Edessa ovina is designated here. Edessa argali Breddin, 1903 is considered a junior synonym of E. impura. Females of E. ovina and E. impura, and male of E. sahlbergii are described for the first time.

The morphology of the genus Scapheremaeus Berlese, 1910 is reviewed and characters of taxonomic utility delineated. Based on the morphological review, some 13 species-groups are outlined based on major morphotypes. There are two main categories: i) species that have a complete circumdorsal scissure with plicate microsculpture on the circumnotogastral plate and strongly contrasting microsculpture (foveolae, ridges or tubercles) on the centrodorsal plate (plicate species-groups), and ii) species with the circumdorsal scissure complete, incomplete or absent but with little or no contrast in microsculpture between the central and lateral regions: typically both regions foveolate or reticulate (non- plicate species-groups). A catalogue of world species of Scapheremaeus is provided. Scapheremaeus petrophagus (Banks, 1906) is not a Scapheremaeus but belongs to an undetermined genus in the Ameronothroidea. Cymbaeremaeus cyclops Oudemans, 1915 is recombined to Scapheremaeus. Five new species are described (S. angusi sp. nov., S. cheloniella sp. nov., S. ewani sp. nov., S. lambieae sp. nov., and S. pulleni sp. nov.) from soil and litter habitats in semi-arid Mallee eucalypt vegetation at Bookmark Biosphere Reserve, South Australia. These are the first members of the genus Scapheremaeus to be described from Australia, though undescribed species have been recorded previously. All the new species are morphologically closely-related and belong to a single species-group: Carinatus.

Five new species from four species-groups of the genus Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805 are described from China and Thailand: P. sakaew Yao & Li sp. nov. (Thailand) from the P. bidentatus species-group; P. umphang Yao & Li sp. nov. (Thailand) from the P. halabala species-group; P. ningan Yao & Li sp. nov. (China) from the P. phungiformes species-group; and P. yongshun Yao & Li sp. nov. (China) and P. yuxi Yao & Li sp. nov. (China), both from the P. yichengicus species-group.
