On the systematic position of Dino Loman and Toccolus Roewer (Opiliones, Laniatores, Epedanidae), with the description of a new species from western Java, Indonesia

A new species, Toccolus javanensis sp. nova, is described from a rainforest in Gunung Puncak, western Java, Indonesia. It is the fourth species of the genus, which was hitherto known only from continental SE Asia. It possesses a low ocularium and general body shape strongly resembling Dino weberi Loman from Sumatra. The relationships of Toccolus are discussed and the closely related genus Dino Loman is transferred from Podoctinae (Podoctidae) to Epedaninae (Epedanidae).

Cucullanellus kanabus sp. nov., parasitic in the intestine of the embiotocid fish, Cymatogaster aggregata Gibbons from Departure Bay, British Columbia is described and illustrated. The main features distinguishing C. kanabus from previously described species in the genus are the arrangement of the caudal papillae in males, the general body shape and various measurements. The species considered referable to Cucullanellus Törnquist 1931 are listed.

A new species Calcealges bochkovi sp. n. (Astigmata: Analgoidea) is described from the lowland tiny greenbul Phyllastrephus debilis (Sclater) from Mozambique. This species is close to C. gyroplax Gaud et Mouchet, 1957 described from African bulbuls. Both sexes of these species are very similar in general body shape: in particular, in the form of the epimerites and of the opisthosomal lobes, as well as in the shape of the dorsal shields. The main diagnostic feature of the new species is the striation of dorsal shields, especially pronounced on the prodorsum (in C. gyroplax, these shields lack striae and they are uniformly dotted). The standard morphological description is supplemented by the COI barcode data.

A third species of Michaelcallianassa Sakai, 2002 is described based on two specimens from subtidal waters of the Persian Gulf. Michaelcallianassa persica sp. nov. resembles M. indica Sakai, 2002 from the Andaman Sea, but can be differentiated by possession of six spines on the cutting edge of the large cheliped, a telson with two pairs of lateral movable spines as well as two spines dorsally in the center of the telson and an exopod with a row of spines on the postero-distal margin. The new species compares favorably with congeners M. indica Sakai, 2002 and M. sinica Liu & Liu, 2009 in many diagnostic aspects, including body shape, the relative size and shape of pereopods 2–4, maxilliped 3, and the rostrum. Some limited comparison is made to the related genus Balsscallianassa Sakai, 2011.

Too late for correction, I find that in my recent paper on western Orthoptera* I have redescribed Scudder's Aulocara rufum as a new species under the name guanieri, placing it in the not very nearly related genus Heliastus. This unfortunate mistake was brought about by the uncertain position of the genus Aulocara, which possesses both tryxaline and Œdepodine characters. The generral aspect of the species of the genus is certainly very strongly œdipodinean and the characters of the declivate vertex, subperpendicular front, filiform antennæ, small round eyes, obsolete lateral carinæ, twice or thrice severed median carina, wrinkled pronotum, and of the generally present intercalary vein, all indicate close affinity to the Œdipodinæ.

ABSTRACTIn thirteen (mostly soil) mixed samples, collected from nine localities on the Antarctic continent and some of the neighbouring islands, 788 specimens and 32 eggs of tardigrades were found. In total, five species were identified:Acutuncus antarcticus, Echiniscus jenningsi,Diphascon(D.)victoriae,Hypsibius dujardiniandRamajendas dastychisp. nov.A. antarcticuswas the most abundant (nearly 90% of all specimens) and was the prevailing taxon found in the majority of locations.R. dastychisp. nov. is the fourth species described in the exclusively Antarctic/sub-Antarctic genus. The new species differs from all other congeners by the presence of four gibbosities on the caudo-dorsal cuticle (configuration II:2–2) and also by some morphometric characters. In this paper we also briefly discuss the taxonomy and zoogeography of the genusRamajendas.

Dichotomius (Dichotomius) quadrilobatus new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Dichotomiini), from western Amazonia (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) is described and its putative systematic position within the Dichotomius boreus species group is discussed. An updated identification key to the species of the Dichotomius boreus species group is provided. Additionally, Dichotomius (Selenocopris) fortepunctatus Luederwaldt, 1923 is recorded for the first time in Colombia.

A synopsis of the genus Cnidoscolus is presented for the midwestern region of Brazil, which resulted from the analysis of about 1,200 specimens from 62 national and foreign herbaria, including type collections. Observations of populations in field were also made. Nine species are recognized, one of which, C. mcvaughii, is new to science. It is described and illustrated, and comments about its geographic distribution, morphological relationships, systematic position, phenology, and conservation status are provided, as well as images and a map. The other species are contrasted by a dichotomous key. Also, distributional information, maps, conservation evaluations, images and morphologically diagnoses are included. Eight synonymizations, one lectotypification, a neotypifcation, and the re-establishment of C. neglectus are proposed.

The genus Pselactus in the Cape Verde Islands is reviewed. Pselactus obesulus (Wollaston, 1867) from São Vicente is redescribed and P. strakai sp. nov. from São Nicolau is described. Both species are diagnosed and illustrated; their larvae are described, larval morphology is discussed and the current state of knowledge about immature stages of Cossoninae is summarized. The systematic position of the genus within Onycholipini is reviewed, and the placement of genus in Cossoninae is discussed. A short note on biogeography of Pselactus is provided.

The discovery of a new species,Cyclolampas altusnew species in the upper Callovian of Burgundy (France) leads to the systematic revision of the rare echinoid genusCyclolampasPomel, 1883. Two morphometric approaches are used jointly to describe and quantify variations in test shape: the analysis of linear measurements and the Elliptic Fourier shape analysis. Both analyses yield congruent results that highlight the amplitude of within-species variations and quantify the part due to allometry. Along with the description ofC. altus, the systematic position of species formerly assigned to the generaPygorhytisPomel, 1883 andCyclolampasis amended. Previously attributed to the genusPygorhytis,Cyclolampas castanea(Desor, 1858) is reassigned to the genusCyclolampason the base of new observations. Conversely, the examination of the Bajocian speciesPygorhytis kiliani(Lambert, 1909) andPygorhytis gillieroniDesor in Desor and de Loriol, 1872, which were previously assigned toCyclolampasnow supports their taxonomic reassignment to the genusPygorhytis. Finally, the two speciesCyclolampas verneuili(Cotteau, 1870) andCyclolampas cotteauiMintz, 1966 (nomen nudum) are considered junior synonyms of the genus type speciesCyclolampas voltzii(Agassiz, 1839). The questioned origin date of the genus, estimated either to the Bajocian or to the Oxfordian, is now clearly established to be upper Callovian. These new results fit well with the overall scheme of atelostomate echinoid evolution and migration to deep-sea environments during the Middle and Upper Jurassic.

The Afrotropical species described as Trachyphloeini Lacordaire, 1863 were examined and their taxonomic status is revised. Atrachyphloeus Voss, 1962 is proposed as a junior synonym of Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Cathormiocerus africanus Hoffmann, 1965 as a junior synonym of Tapinomorphus sylvicola Voss, 1962 and Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 as a junior synonym of Platycopes tuberculatus Marshall, 1906. Atrachyphloeus convergens Voss, 1962 is transferred to the genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842, Trachyphloeus hardenbergi Marshall, 1923 and T. notulatus Boheman, 1842 to Glyptosomus Schoenherr, 1847, Trachyphloeus nanus Fåhraeus, 1871 to Pentatrachyphloeus Voss, 1974, Trachyphloeus pustulifer Voss, 1959 to Platycopes Schoenherr, 1823 and Trachyphloeus setiger Fåhraeus, 1871 to Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842. “Trachyphloeosoma” brevicolle Voss, 1974, “Trachyphloeus” brevis Boheman, 1842, “T”. nodifrons Hoffmann, 1968 and “T”. squalidus Boheman, 1842 are provisionally left in their current genera, but new genera for them will be described in future papers. The genus Phaylomerinthus Schoenherr, 1842 has been redefined and redescribed.
