Two new ovoviviparous species of the family Selachinematidae and Sphaerolaimidae (Nematoda, Chromadorida & Monhysterida) from the northern South China Sea

Two new ovoviviparous nematode species are described from South China Sea. Bendiella vivipara n. sp. belongs to the family Selachinematidae and is characterized by a cuticle with lateral differentiation of 2–4 longitudinal rows of dots, and the presence of 3 papillose precloacal supplements. Parasphaerolaimus jintiani n. sp. is characterized by a cuticle with lateral longitudinal unstriated band extending from about the middle of the pharynx to the anterior two-thirds of the tail and a vulva situated far posteriorly. The importance of ovoviviparity in free living marine nematodes is discussed.

A new free-living marine nematode species of the genus Elzalia belonging to the family Xyalidae is described from the seabed sediment of the northeast region of the South China Sea. Elzalia heterospiculata sp. nov. is characterized by elongated spicules unequal in length, left spicule prominently longer than right spicule, ratio of body length to spicule length is 4.7–6.2; complex gubernaculum consisting of four sections, apophyses clavate, 12–14 µm long; and amphideal fovea positioned near the top of the head. It is similar to E. federici Castillo-Fernandez and Lambshead, 1990 and E. floresi Gerlach, 1957. However, the new species differs from the similar two species in having markedly unequal spicules, complex gubernaculum consisting of four sections, amphideal fovea close to the top of the head. Updated key to all species of Elzalia is provided.

Three new species of free-living marine nematodes Micoletzkyia longispicula sp. nov., Micoletzkyia filicaudata sp. nov. and Micoletzkyia nanhaiensis sp. nov. from the Yellow Sea and the South China Sea are described. Micoletzkyia longispicula sp. nov. is characterized by spicules elongated and straight, 7 a.b.d. long, pear-shaped proximally and pointed distally; gubernaculum conical, without apophysis, and tubular supplement headlike proximally. Micoletzkyia filicaudata sp. nov. is characterized by slender body with relatively long filiform tail (8.1 a.b.d.), spicules elongated and straight (4.4 a.b.d.), cephalate proximally and pointed distally, gubernaculum tubular, with dorsal apophysis. Micoletzkyia nanhaiensis sp. nov. is characterized by spicules slender and curved, 2.5 a.b.d. long, cephalous proximally and chapiter-shaped distally, and gubernaculum with relatively long dorsal apophysis. A key for all known species of Micoletzkyia is proposed.

One unrecorded species of free-living marine nematodes from the South China Sea is described as Wieseria bicepes sp. nov. The present species is characterized by three circles of anterior sensilla nearly equal in length; four cephalic setae just behind the outer labial setae; oblong amphideal fovea with double contours and a handle-like protrusion at the base; tail tip bifurcate; spicules slightly curved with proximally cephalated and distally tapered; gubernaculum absent. The species is easily distinguished from the congeneric species by tail with a bifurcate tip and cephalic setae closely adjacent to labial setae.

Polychaetes of the family Capitellidae are poorly studied in Chinese waters. Amongst the known capitellid genera in China, Leiochrides Augener, 1914 is an unusual genus encountered in marine surveys. In this study, a Leiochrides specimen was obtained during a survey conducted in the Beibu Gulf, northern South China Sea and described herein as a new species Leiochrides guangxiensis sp. nov. The new species differs from its congeners by having uniramous chaetiger 1, chaetigers 11–12 with notopodial capillaries and neuropodial hooks, abdominal hooks with seven teeth above the main fang in three rows, pygidium with four anal cirri, and branchial fascicles with up to 17 filaments. The taxonomic status of the monospecific genus Pseudoleiocapitella Harmelin, 1964 and Leiochrides norvegicus Fauchald, 1972 are discussed.

Eulepethidae is a family of scale-bearing polychaetes. Although members of this family are common inhabitants of tropical and subtropical coastal waters, their diversity is low, with only 22 recognized species in six genera. Here we describe Eulepethus nanhaiensis sp. nov. based on 12 specimens collected from the coastal waters of the northern South China Sea. This new species can be distinguished from Eulepethus hamifer, the only previously described species in this genus, by having up to two spade-shaped lateral processes in some of the anterior elytrae, a blunt-tipped acicular chaeta in the neuropodia of segment 3, and a pair of non-overlapping elytrae in each posterior segment. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Grubeulepis and Mexieulepis are sister genera, and these two genera form the sister clade of Eulepethus.
