Morphotaxonomic revision of species-groups of Simulium (Simulium) (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Oriental Region

Species of eight species-groups (seven named and one unnamed) of Simulium (Simulium) Latreille are revised chiefly based on the adult female and male genitalia. Four species-groups are each divided into more than two groups. Thus, the S. christophersi species-group is divided into two (S. christophersi and S. nebulicola species-groups), the S. griseifrons species-group into six (S. griseifrons, S. grossifilum, S. chungi, S. crocinum, S. indicum and S. yadongense species-groups), the S. malyschevi species-group into two (S. malyschevi and S. pavlovskii species-groups), and the S. melanopus species-group into three (S. melanopus, S. dumogaense and S. iridescens species-groups). The S. crassifilum species-group is merged with the S. variegatum species-group. Simulium fulvipes (Ono) of the former S. malyschevi species-group and S. dentastylum Yang, Chen & Luo of Simulium s. str. species unplaced to species-group are removed from the subgenus Simulium because their male styles are subequal in length to the coxites. A revised classification of species of the 15 species-groups including eight new species-groups of Simulium (Simulium) is presented. Keys to 20 species-groups of Simulium (Simulium) in the Oriental Region are provided for adult females and males.

We provide diagnostics for eight species groups of Oriental Pseudopostega Kozlov (Lepidoptera: Opostegidae) and a pictorial key for their identification. We designate three new species groups, P. frigida and P. strigulata groups, and the P. auritella group for two Palaearctic species, and rename the P. nigrimaculella group as the P. matrona group. We assign P. euryntis (Meyrick), P. zelopa (Meyrick), and P. subviolaceae (Meyrick), three formerly unplaced species, to species groups based on re-examination of male and female genitalia. We list 22 currently known Oriental Pseudopostega species, and synonymize Pseudopostega spilodes (Meyrick), syn. nov., with P. machaerias (Meyrick). One new Mediterranean species with affiliations to the Oriental fauna, P. matrona Karsholt & Remeikis, sp. nov., is described. The new species is illustrated with photographs of the adults and male genitalia. Additionally, we provide a distribution map of the P. matrona group, now extralimital to the Oriental region.

Two new species of the genus Agrisius Walker, 1855, A. orhanti Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. n. and A. leloii Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. n. are described from South Laos and Vietnam respectively. A. orhanti sp. n. belongs to the A. japonicus Leech, 1889 species-group. Whereas, the male genitalia structure of A. leloii sp. n. is intermediate between those of the A. japonicus and the A. guttivitta Walker, 1855 species-groups, therefore, it is assigned to a separated species-group (the A. leloii species-group). Agrisius dubatolovi Orhant, 2012 is downgraded as a subspecies of A. japonicus: Agrisius japonicus dubatolovi Orhant, 2012, stat. nov. Female genitalia of species of the A. japonicus and most of the A. guttivitta species-groups are illustrated for the first time.

The Helina obtusipennis species-group is erected for nine species of Helina in the Palaearctic and Oriental regions, namely H. atlantica (Tiensuu), H. ciliatocosta (Zetterstedt), H. eurymetopa Emden, H. macrocera Hennig, H. mandschurica Hennig, H. medogensis sp. nov., H. obtusipennis (Fallén), H. setigera (Pokorny), and H. spinicosta ( Zetterstedt). These species are Palaearctic in distribution except for H. eurymetopa Emden and H. medogensis, which are known from the Oriental Region. Members of this group can be easily differentiated from those of other Helina species-groups by their broad frons in both sexes with one or two pairs of upper orbital setae. A key to the males of the H. obtusipennis species-group is given.

The pini species group in the genus Typhlodromus Scheuten, which includes 10 species, is described and discussed. Two new species are proposed: Typhlodromus bisoni, which was identified as T. pini previously, and Typhlodromus mahri. The generic concepts of various authors concerning the species in the pini group are discussed and a key to and descriptions of the adult females of the group are given.

The predominantly Oriental genus Eulichas Jacobson, 1913, family Eulichadidae, is reviewed in part. The Eulichas funebris species group is revised. A brief history of classification of the genus, as well as the general morphology of the adults, is presented. The following nine new species are described: E. birmanica Hájek, sp. nov. (Myanmar: Tenasserim), E. haucki Hájek, sp. nov. (Thailand), E. jaechi Hájek, sp. nov. (Malaysia), E. janbezdeki Hájek, sp. nov. (Laos); E. kubani Hájek, sp. nov. (Laos, Vietnam), E. meghalayensis Hájek, sp. nov. (India: Meghālaya), E. minuta Hájek, sp. nov. (Sumatra, Nias, Siberut), E. strbai Hájek, sp. nov. (Malaysia), and E. tanahrata Hájek, sp. nov. (Malaysia). A lectotype is designated for E. mediocris (Pic, 1921) (Sumatra).

Three new species and one new record are added to the philopotamid fauna of India from the Indian Himalaya. The newly described species under the genus Chimarra Stephens include Chimarra butticulata sp.n. and C. gangotriensis sp.n. both from Uttarakhand and C. sangtami sp.n. from Nagaland. The record of C. nigra Kimmins (from Sikkim) constitutes the first record of that species from India, although it was previously known from Nepal. It is redescribed here from India as there are minor differences in the male genitalia from previously described species (in original paper of Kimmins only lateral view of the phallus was illustrated and in the redescribed species the ventral view of phallus is illustrated along with the lateral view). The four species belong to two different species groups and one species is unplaced in the species group. These species are distinguishable from each other as well as from the previously known allied species by consistent taxonomic features of the inferior appendages, tergite X, and the phallic apparatus of males.

During a DNA barcoding campaign of leaf-mining Gracillariidae from the Asian part of Russia, a new species ofPhyllonorycterHübner, feeding on the Siberian pea shrub,CaraganaarborescensLam. (Fabaceae) was discovered in Siberia. Here, this taxon is described asPhyllonorycterivanisp. n.Among Fabaceae-feedingPhyllonorycter, so far onlyP.caraganella(Ermolaev) has been known to develop onCaragana.PhyllonorycterivaniandP.caraganellashow a large divergence in morphology (external and male genitalia) and barcode region of the mtDNA-COI gene (8.6%). They feed on different host plants species and have different ranges in Russia. We show that DNA barcode data weakly supports the Fabaceae-feeding species groups. In addition, we show that morphologically (strongly) and genetically (weakly),P.ivanihas affinity to thehaasispecies group, a West Palearctic group with asymmetrical male genitalia.

The species belonging to the Sphodrine genus Laemostenus Bonelli, 1810 from central and southern Zagros Mts. and central zones of Iran were studied. Two new species-groups of the subgenus Antisphodrus Schaufuss, 1865 are proposed, and seven new species belonging to subgenera Antisphodrus Schaufuss, 1865 and Iranosphodrus Lohaj & Casale, 2011 are described. Morphological characters of the habitus and shape of male genitalia were used to delimit the species. New species of subgenus Antisphodrus are: L. (A.) zagrosensis sp. nov. and L. (A.) speleophilus sp. nov. from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, and L. (A.) farsicus sp. nov. from Fars province (zagrosensis species-group); Laemostenus (A) zakariyiensis sp. nov. from Fars province (aequalis species-group), and L. (A.) shirazensis sp. nov. from Fars province (glasunowi species-group).  Based on the newly collected material, the subgenus Iranosphodrus is redefined and two new species from Yazd province are described: L.(I.) yazdensis sp. nov. and L.(I.) troglophilus sp. nov. An identification key for the Laemostenus species of the studied area is provided, and a check list for Iranian representatives of subgenera Antisphodrus and Iranosphodrus are given.

The genus Dragmatucha Meyrick is reviewed and 11 species of a total of 13 are described as new. The new species originate from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. Based on morphological characters, especially the color pattern of both wings, the genus is divided into two species-groups: the proaula species-group with five species (D. proaula Meyrick, 1908; D. galbinea Park, sp. nov.; D. kabarolensis Park, sp. nov.; D. saltualis Park, sp. nov. and D. vittatella Park, sp. nov.) and the hispidula species-group with eight species (D. hispidula Park, 2018; D. goniotes Park, sp. nov.; D. cochliana Park, sp. nov.; D. pedalis Park, sp. nov.; D. ghanaensis Park, sp. nov.; D. crinifrutalis Park, sp. nov.; D. dizostera Park, sp. nov. and D. kakumensis Park, sp. nov.). Adults and male genitalia of all new species are illustrated, but female genitalia are provided only for D. ghanaensis Park, sp. nov. and D. kakumensis Park, sp. nov. When fresh material was available, the analysis of COI sequences was undertaken.

A new species-group of Lasioseius is described from adults and immatures of four newly described and one undescribed species associated with hispine beetles of the genera Cephaloleia and Chelobasis and other gamasine mites in the furled leaf habitat of Heliconia and related Zingiberales plants. The species-group presents a suite of apomorphic attributes placing it in the subgenus L. (Lasioseius). Adults and immatures were found moving freely on and off the beetles when the latter were exposed from their habitat. Larviparity is indicated by adult females gravid with fully developed larvae. Limited data suggest considerable host specificity between mites and their beetle hosts, indicating that there may be a vast diversity of these mites associated with hundreds of species of hispine beetles in the Neotropical Region. Keys are provided to currently accepted species-groups of Lasioseius and to the species within the new species-group.
