Taxonomic changes and description of two new species for the Phyllodactylus lanei complex (Gekkota: Phyllodactylidae) in Mexico

An integrative taxonomy approach was implemented based on analysis of genetic, phylogenetic, morphological and ecological data to identify the cryptic diversity within the Phyllodactylus lanei complex. At least six species can be identified, of which four are currently considered subspecies: Phyllodactylus lanei, Phyllodactylus rupinus, Phyllodactylus isabelae, Phyllodactylus lupitae and two corresponding to undescribed taxa, which are identified and described in this contribution. These differ from other Mexican geckos in several characters: genetic distance (DNAmt), position in molecular phylogeny (concatened data DNAmt+DNAnu), species tree, morphological characters such as snout-vent length, longitudinal scales, tubercles from head to tail, interorbital scales, scales across venter, third labial–snout scales and rows of tubercles across dorsum; there are also differences in their bioclimatic profiles (temperature and precipitation) and geographical distribution. The most recent studies on taxonomy and evolution of Mexican geckos (Phyllodactylus) show that the diversity of this group of reptiles is currently underestimated, suggesting that more research and conservation efforts are should be addressed at these lizards.

Based on both morphological characters and phylogenetic relationships, one new genus Progoniogryllus gen. nov. and two new species, Progoniogryllus rotundus sp. nov. and Progoniogryllus directus sp. nov., are proposed. The new genus is compared with similar genera of Gryllodes Saussure, 1874, Parasongella Otte, 1987, Callogryllus Sjöstedt, 1910 and Goniogryllus Chopard. 1936 by morphological and phylogenetic methods. Based on the knowledge so far, the new genus is very close to Goniogryllus. All the new taxa are described and illustrated, and some information on mating behavior of the new was also provided.

Material collected between 1999 and 2011 in Papua New Guinea and the Papua Province of Indonesia unveiled the enormous diversity ofLabiobaetison this island. Twenty-six new species were identified and delimited by integrative taxonomy using genetic distance (COI, Kimura-2-parameter) and morphology. These new species are described and illustrated based on larvae, augmenting the total number ofLabiobaetisspecies on the island of New Guinea to 32. Seven morpho-groups of species are proposed based on morphological characters and a key to all New Guinea species is provided. The generic attributes of the larvae are summarised and slightly modified based on the examinations of the new species. Results on the genetics of most species (COI) are also provided. The interspecific K2P distances are between 13% and 32%, the intraspecific distances usually between 0% and 2%. Possible reasons for the remarkable richness of this genus in New Guinea are discussed.

The Asian snail-eating snakes Pareas is the largest genus of the family Pareidae (formerly Pareatidae), and widely distributed in Southeast Asia. However, potential diversity remains poorly explored due to their highly conserved morphology and incomplete samples. Here, on basis of more extensive sampling, interspecific phylogenetic relationships of the genus Pareas were reconstructed using two mitochondrial fragments (cyt b and ND4) and two nuclear genes (c-mos and Rag1), and multivariate morphometrics conducted for external morphological data. Both Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses consistently showed that the genus Pareas was comprised of two distinct, monophyletic lineages with moderate to low support values. Based on evidences from molecular phylogeny and morphological data, cryptic diversity of this genus was uncovered and two new species were described. In additional, the validity of P. macularius is confirmed.

Two new species of the weevil genus Rhamphus from Italy are herein described: R. bavierai n. sp. (Sicily) and R. hampsicora n. sp. (Sardinia). Both are morphologically and from a molecular perspective close to R. oxyacanthae (Marsham, 1802) and R. monzinii Pesarini & Diotti, 2012. Aside from a diagnostic description and a synoptic key, distribution data and notes on the host plants of the four species are reported. Whereas R. monzinii can be distinguished by several morphological characters, the other three species are morphologically very similar to each other and separable only by the combination of a few subtle characters. On the contrary, a preliminary molecular study revealed substantial divergences of mtCOI from 6.2 to 14.9% between the species, confirming the importance of an integrative taxonomy.

Two new species of Pericopini (Erebiidae, Arctiinae) are described from Guatemala: Gnophaela baileyi sp. nov. and Dysschema faustinoi sp. nov. Detailed species descriptions are based upon morphological and molecular characters as well as distributional data. Analyses of the CO1 locus (a 658 nucleotide sequence commonly referred to as a barcode) in 397 individuals of the genus Dysschema Hübner reveal that many taxonomic changes recently proposed by V. O. Becker are not supported by molecular data. Dysschema appears not to be a genus of wide ranging species but rather a complex of more localized species that require redefinition using more detailed morphological, molecular, and ecological data.

Ausgehend von ökologischen (idealtypischen) Einordnungen der flugunfähigen, westpaläarktischen Cryptorhynchinae werden molekulare und morphologische Ergebnisse zur monophyletischen Rüsselkäfer-Gattung Acallorneuma Mainardi, 1906 und zu den subterrestrisch lebenden Arten des Tribus Torneumatini Bedel, 1884 vorgestellt. Ein Katalog und ein Bilderschlüssel zu den 8 validen Arten der Acallorneuma leitet eine Diskussion über die begrenzten Möglichkeiten einer rein morphologischen Analyse der uniformen Arten des Genus Acallorneuma ein. In einem weiteren Schritt wird die morphologische Systematik mit der molekularen Rekonstruktion der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse anhand einer Region des mitochondrialen CO1 Gens verglichen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wenden wir uns den gegenwärtig 71 bekannten, blinden, flügellosen und weitgehend kryptischen, tief im Erdreich lebenden Arten der Torneumatini zu. Die molekulare Analyse zeigt zwischen den Arten erhebliche p-Distanzen, macht aber auch deutlich, dass die Rekonstruktion der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse ganz entscheidend von der Anzahl der Arten und Proben abhängig ist. Dennoch wurden einige taxonomische Änderungen vorgenommen: Torneuma s. str. mit der Typusart Torneuma caecum Wollaston, 1860 gibt es nur auf dem Madeira Archipel! Die Arten des Subgenus Paratyphloporus Solari, 1937 stat. nov. – und zwar nur die von den Kanarischen Inseln – gehören in das Subgenus Paratorneuma Roudier, 1956 stat. nov. Für alle anderen Arten aus dem mediterranen Gebiet und den östlichen kanarischen Inseln ist eine endgültige Klassifikation zur Zeit noch nicht möglich (incertae sedis), auch wenn erste Gruppen - eingeteilt vor allem nach der Innensackstruktur des Aedoeagus - hier bereits vorgestellt werden (siehe Anhang 2). Torneuma deplanatum deplanatum (Hampe, 1864) ist die Typusart des Subgenus Typhloporus und schließt einige, aber eben nicht alle mediterranen Arten mit einem konstant tiefen Rüsselkanal ein, der – das zeigen unsere vergleichenden Studien – offensichtlich mehrere Male in der Evolution ausgebildet wurde. Zwei neue Arten werden abschließenden beschrieben: Torneuma (s. str.) isambertoi Stüben spec. nov. von Madeira and Torneuma (s.l.) cadizensis Stüben spec. nov. aus dem Süden Spaniens. Two new species, Hyphessobrycon frickei Guimarães, Brito, Bragança, Katz & Ottoni sp. nov. and H. geryi Guimarães, Brito, Bragança, Katz & Ottoni sp. nov., are herein described, based on seven different and independent species delimitation methods, and on molecular and morphological characters, making the hypothesis of these new species supported from an integrative taxonomy perspective. They belong to the “Rosy tetra” clade, which is mainly characterized by the presence of a dark brown or black blotch on the dorsal fin and the absence of a midlateral stripe on the body. These two new species are distinguished from the other members of this clade mainly by the arrangement, shape and color pattern of humeral and dorsal-fin spots, as well as by other characters related to scale counts and body pigmentation. The placement of the new species within the “Rosy tetra” clade was based on the combination of morphological character states mentioned above and corroborated by a molecular phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit 1. In addition, a new clade (here termed Hyphessobrycon copelandi clade) within the “Rosy tetra” clade is proposed based on molecular data, comprising H. copelandi, H. frickei sp. nov., H. geryi sp. nov. and a still undescribed species. Our results corroborate the occurrence of hidden species within the “Rosy tetra” clade, as suggested by previous studies.

We describe two new species of Tropidodipsas related to the T. fasciata species group as defined by Kofron (1987), and provide morphological and molecular data to support the novelty of both species. A partial molecular phylogeny of the Mexican species of snail-eating snakes (Serpentes, Dipsadidae) is presented, and we discuss evolutionary relationships as supported by our molecular results. We analyze specific relationships of the new species described herein with their closest relatives. We present a distribution map for all species of Tropidodipsas and include photographs of living individuals of each species. Finally, we discuss other taxonomic changes based on our molecular phylogeny as well as conservation priorities of the new species.

Two East Asian Lomariopsis (Lomariopsidaceae, Polypodiales) species, Lomariopsis moorei and Lomariopsis longini, which were previously misidentified as L. spectabilis, are here described as new species based on evidence from morphological characters and a molecular phylogeny. The two species differ from the three other described species in East Asia by their venation, pinna shapes, and perine morphology. A phylogeny based on a combined dataset of three chloroplast regions (rbcL+ rps4-trnS + trnL-L-F) showed that L. moorei and L. longini each formed a well-supported monophyletic group which was distantly related to both L. spectabilis and the other morphologically similar East Asian species, L. boninensis.
