A survey of Agromyzidae (Diptera) reared from leafmines on Long Island, New York; host associations, distribution data, and the description and host association of a new species

Leafmining Agromyzidae (Diptera) are both common and widespread, yet little is known of the host associations and distribution of most species. Here we report on a multi-year study of agromyzid diversity on Long Island, New York. We reared 45 species and identified for the first time a host plant for Agromyza masculina Sehgal and a likely host plant for Ophiomyia carolinensis Spencer. Of the 45 species, 17 are new records for New York State, for which fewer than 40 agromyzid species had previously been known. A new agromyzid species was reared from blotch mines on black-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia sp. and an undetermined yellow garden composite, both in the Asteraceae; this species is described here.

Purpose Over the last five years, approximately 50% of the students in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island and 20% across New York State have opted out of the yearly standardized tests for third through eighth grade. This article focuses on two grassroots organizations, New York State Allies for Public Education (NYSAPE) and Long Island Opt Out (LIOO), the two parents who have been central to the organizations’ success, and the strategies and tactics that the two organizations have adopted to achieve such a high opt-out rate in New York. Context Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), third through eighth grade public school students have been required to take yearly standardized tests. The most recent version of the exams focused on assessing students, their teachers, and schools based on the Common Core State Standards. Many educators and parents have argued that the standards and assessments negatively affect student learning. In response, educators, parents, teachers, and students have lobbied and publicly testified in an effort to reduce the length of the exams, if not eliminate them. However, the testimonies have had almost no impact on the policymakers. Consequently, some parents concluded that the only way to influence policymakers is to get enough students to opt out of the tests so that the scores were not valid and thus could no longer be used to compare students and teachers within and across schools for accountability purposes. Research Design This study is drawn from a qualitative research project in which we conducted interviews to understand how the opt-out movement developed and the strategies it adopted in relation to high-stakes testing in New York. The interviews with two parent leaders from NYSAPE and LIOO are the main data source for this article. Findings NYSAPE and LIOO can be characterized as real grassroots social movements in that all members have input in the goals and organizing strategies, and unpaid leaders emerge from the membership. Further, because the organizations lack permanent funding, they have to be innovative in using media. By motivating and empowering others and using social media such as Facebook and Twitter, they built a large network and a strong base so that they could influence policymakers and respond quickly at the local and state levels. Conclusion Their organizing strategies exemplified the participatory and grassroots nature of the new social movements as theorized by McAlevey. The opt-out movement is pushing back not only against high-stakes testing but also against the larger neoliberal construction of parents as simply consumers of schooling, rather than as active, informed citizens. The movement also supports whole-child schooling.

Six populations of Great Plains Ladies’-tresses (Spiranthes magnicamporum Sheviak) have recently been discovered in three locations east of the lower Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States. The possible occurrence of S. cernua × magnicamporum hybrids was detected at one New York site. These discoveries are from both natural alvar and disturbed meadow and shore sites. The new records suggest that S. magnicamporum occurs more widely than was suspected previously, its presence perhaps masked by its similarity to the common S. cernua (L.) Richard. Eastern occurrences may represent a combination of post-glacial relict populations, responses to climate change, and the results of long-distance dispersal events. These range extensions constitute the most easterly known populations of S. magnicamporum in North America. They also represent new records for New York State (including Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties) and for the City of Ottawa in Ontario.

Part and counterpart of a well-preserved specimen of Gondekia lancifer (Reimann, 1945a), and a well-preserved specimen of Pseudohydnoceras erraticum Reimann, 1935, are described from the Wanakah Member of the Middle Devonian, Givetian, Ludlowville Formation, of western New York State. The specimen of Gondekia is only the second articulated specimen known and is more complete than the holotype. It has an intact skeleton of felted sexiradiates of three orders of spicules; the largest has rays approximately 2 mm long. The specimen of Pseudohydnoceras has preserved hexactine-based spicules in a dictyid skeleton, described for the species for the first time.

AbstractA single specimen of a new species of the chasmataspidid Diploaspis Størmer, 1972 is described from the upper Silurian (Pridoli) Phelps Member of the Fiddlers Green Formation (Bertie Group) in Herkimer County, New York State, USA. Diploaspis praecursor sp. nov. is distinguished by the shape of the posterolateral margins of the buckler, which are drawn out into angular epimera, and by the lack of elongate tubercles on the postabdomen. This discovery increases the taxonomic diversity of the Bertie Group by extending the geographic extent of Diploaspididae into North America. D. praecursor pre-dates previously known species of Diploaspis by more than 10 million years.

ABSTRACTIt is generally accepted that protecting natural land cover would protect biodiversity. This would only be true as a general statement if the relationship between richness and natural land cover were monotonic positive and scale- and method-independent. Assertions about habitat loss causing species losses often come from broad-scale assessment of richness (e.g., from range maps) combined with patterns of natural habitat conversion. Yet, the evidence about species loss following habitat loss or fragmentation typically comes from fine-scale experiments. Here, we test whether broad-extent relationships between avian species richness and natural land cover are independent of: 1) whether species distribution data come from systematic censuses (atlases) versus range maps, and 2) the grain size of the analysis. We regressed census-based and range map-based avian species richness against the proportion of natural land cover and temperature. Censused richness at the landscape level was obtained from Breeding Bird Atlases of Ontario and New York State. Range-map richness derived from BirdLife International range maps. Comparisons were made across different spatial grains: 25-km2, 100-km2, and 900-km2. Over regional extents, range-map richness relates strongly to temperature, irrespective of spatial grain. Censused species richness relates to temperature less strongly. Range-map richness is a negative function of the proportion of natural land cover, while realized richness is a peaked function. The two measures of richness are not monotonically related to each other. In conclusion, the data do not indicate that, in practice, landscapes with greater natural land cover in southern Ontario or in New York State have higher species richness. Moreover, different data types can lead to dramatically different relationships between richness and natural land cover. We argue that the argument that habitat loss is the main driver of species loss has become a panchreston. It may be misguiding conservation biology strategies by focusing on a threat that is too general to be usefully predictive.
