A review of the Neotropical microcaddisfly genus Acostatrichia Mosely, 1939 with description of a new species from Brazil (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae: Leucotrichiinae)

The microcaddisfly genus Acostatrichia Mosely (Leucotrichiinae, Leucotrichiini) is revised. Based on morphological features of the adult male, species assigned to the genus are here divided into three species groups: A. plaumanni Group, A. brevipenis Group, and A. cerna Group. After examination of type specimens, the subjective synonymy of Acostatrichia darda Oláh & Flint, A. hosulaba Oláh & Flint, and A. pika Oláh & Flint is proposed, with the first name being chosen to have priority over the other two. Acostatrichia ketvilla Oláh & Flint is considered a junior synonym of Costatrichia nelsonferreirai Santos & Nessimian, and another 3 species are removed from Acostatrichia: A. tapada Oláh & Flint and A. rovidka Oláh & Flint are transferred to Costatrichia; and A. topora Oláh & Flint is transferred to Leucotrichia Mosely. A new species, Acostatrichia araca sp. nov. is described and illustrated from northern Brazil; descriptions and illustrations are also provided for the other 11 Acostatrichia species. After these nomenclatural acts, the genus Acostatrichia includes 15 species restricted to South America.

A species of Lithoseopsis Mockford, from the Brazilian state of Pará, is described and illustrated. It is the first species of Lithoseopsis recorded in Brazil, and the first of that genus known in South America. It differs from all the other species in the genus in details of the forewing pigmentation and spermapore sclerite. A map with the distribution of the Lithoseopsis species is included and two species groups of Lithoseopsis are diagnosed.

Seven species of freshwater crabs from three families are recorded from and around the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: Thelphusulacapillodigitus sp. n., Thelphusuladicerophilus Ng & Stuebing, 1990, Arachnothelphusaterrapes Ng, 1991, Terrathelphusasecula Ng & Tan, 2015, Parathelphusavalida Ng & Goh, 1987 (new record) (Gecarcinucidae); Isolapotamoningeri Ng & Tan, 1998 (Potamidae); and Geosesarmadanumense Ng, 2002 (Sesarmidae). The new species of Thelphusula Bott, 1979, can be distinguished from all congeners by a unique combination of morphological features, most notably the presence of dense patches of short setae on the fingers of the adult male chelipeds, as well as the structure of the male first gonopod. Arachnothelphusaterrapes is confirmed to be a phytotelm species. A key to all species in the conservation area is provided.

The giant water bug fauna from tropical South America remains poorly known. Three species of Belostoma Latreille (Belostoma fittkaui De Carlo, B. sayagoi De Carlo and B. hirsutum Roback & Nieser) have been cited only a few times in the literature. These three species are remarkable since they represent an extreme variation for the genus, with article II of the labium distinctly shorter than article III. Here, the synonymy of B. hirsutum with B. sayagoi is proposed based on examination of type material and additional specimens. Further, B. fittkaui and B. sayagoi are redescribed, including discussion about comparative morphology with congeners. A new species group is proposed for these species and a key to the Belostoma species groups is provided. Distribution records are also updated.

The Asian frog genus Megophrys is a diverse group of morphologically conserved, forest-dwelling frogs. The genus harbours highly localised species diversification and new species continue to be described on a regular basis. We examined the taxonomic status of a population of Megophrys frogs from the Hoang Lien Range in northern Vietnam and southern China previously identified as M. kuatunensis (subgenus Panophrys). Preliminary phylogenetic analyses using a fragment of 16S rDNA places the species in question within the Megophrys (subgenus Panophrys) species group, a primarily Chinese radiation within the genus. On the basis of morphological, molecular and bioacoustic data, we conclude that this population does not represent M. kuatunensis, or any known species in the genus. We herein describe this species of Megophrys as new. Known only from Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province in Vietnam and Jinping County, Yunnan Province in China, the new species is likely to be threatened by ongoing deforestation in the region. We provide an updated species description of M. kuatunensis based on type specimens, and suggest that M. kuatunensis is likely to be restricted to eastern China.

  The newly described species, Ziziphus budhensis was confirmed as Chinese Jujuba, Z. xiangchengensis on the basis of their DNA analyses. Z. budhensis was explained as a new species on the basis of some morphological differences in 2015. In the Year 2016, the DNA samples were collected from the type locality of Nepal, and the molecular analyses were carried out. The type specimens and the other available images from the different herbariums were examined. Besides, the protologue and the type images were studied carefully. The result showed that though there were some differences in the habit and the habitat of the plant, the previously described new species, Z. budhensis was found to be same as the Chinese species, Z. xiangchengensis. This study also showed the importance of the molecular work of Z. budhensis and confirmed it morphologically distinct although it was very close to the Chinese species.Banko Janakari, Vol. 27, No. 1, page: 55-59

Two species of Xanthagaricus discovered in Hubei Province of China are described based on the macro- and micromorphological features. Their identity is further supported by molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the ribosomal RNA gene. The phylogeny obtained here showed that one of the Chinese species is nested in an exclusive clade which in combination with its striking morphological features, infers that it represents a new species, named X. ianthinus, while the other species is placed as a member in the X. epipastus clade. Descriptions are accompanied with illustrations of macro- and micromorphological characters and a discussion of related taxa is presented.

A new species of Tetragonopterus is described from the rio Jari, a tributary to the left margin of rio Amazonas, at the border between Amapá and Pará States, northern Brazil. It is morphologically diagnosed from the other species of the genus (T. argenteus, T. chalceus, and T. rarus new combination) by the lozenge-shaped spot on the caudal peduncle vs. rounded to square spot on the other species. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase C subunit I, from representatives of all valid species of Tetragonopterus, including this new species, were analyzed. The obtained results revealed a significant genetic distance between the new species and its congeners. A discussion on the new combination, Tetragonopterus rarus, is also provided.

Two new species groups are established for East Palaearctic species of the genus Anthobium Leach, 1819: the atrocephalum group containing the widespread Palaearctic A. atrocephalum (Gyllenhal, 1827), A. formosanum Shavrin, sp. n. (Taiwan), A. hammondi Watanabe, 1990 (Japan), A. lackneri Shavrin, sp. n. (Japan: Hokkaido), and two Chinese species, A. kabateki Shavrin, sp. n. (Yunnan, Gansu) and A. marci Shavrin, sp. n. (Sichuan); the convexior group containing four new species from China: A. convexior Shavrin, sp. n. (Shaanxi, Sichuan), A. auritum Shavrin, sp. n. (Yunnan), A. kabaki Shavrin, sp. n. (Sichuan), and A. semenovi Shavrin, sp. n. (Sichuan). New species are described and illustrated. The species groups are defined, briefly discussed and a key to the species of each group is given. Additionally, a new species of the morchella group, A. inopinatum Shavrin, sp. n. (China: Yunnan) and the nigrum group, A. bengalicum Shavrin, sp. n. (India: West Bengal), are described and illustrated. New faunistic records of A. reflexum (Reitter, 1891) from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan are provided.

In the present work a new species of Homoeoneuria is described based on nymphs and adults from Southeastern Brazil. Based on cladistics, the new species belongs to the subgenus Homoeoneuria.s.s. Homoeoneuria (H). watu sp. n., besides being the second species of the genus reported from South America, is the first representative of the subgenus from the region. The new species can be distinguished from the other described species of the genus by the following combination of characters: In the adult stage, (1) pronotum with prominent posteromedian pale yellow spot almost reaching anterior margin; (2) abdominal color pattern; (3) shape of penes. In the nymph, (1) head heavily washed with brownish-orange between compound eyes and ocelli; (2) antennal pedicels with short, thick setae; (3) small paired tubercles present on vertex and anterior margin of pronotum; (4) galea-lacinia of maxillae with submarginal row of 20–21 long, spinous setae; (5) abdominal color pattern. Comments on the biology of the new species are also provided.

The Solimões Formation (Eocene-Pliocene) is a well-known geological unit due to the great diversity of crocodylian species. Here we describe a new species of Melanosuchus, M. latrubessei sp. nov., from the Talismã locality, state of Amazonas, from the Upper Miocene of the Solimões Formation (Solimões Basin, Brazil). A new phylogenetic inference focused on Caimaninae is provided and the different evolutionary scenarios involving this new species are discussed. In addition, quantitative morphology studies are carried out and comments regarding the paleoecology aspects of this new species are made. M. latrubessei represents a medium-sized generalist predator, being proportional to the medium-sized M. niger. This new species inhabited the drainages of the Solimões Formation and was ecologically related to other taxa of crocodylians during the proto-Amazon Miocene. The evolutionary advantages of Melanosuchus genus are discussed to better understand the biogeographical occurrence of M. niger in South America, a species which survives to this day in contrast to several other species that became extinct during the Miocene-Pliocene periods. The extinction of the Miocene-Pliocene crocodylian taxa of the Solimões Formation, including Melanosuchus latrubessei, seems to be directly related with the uplift of the northern portions of the Andes, which generated significantly changes in drainages and Amazon paleoenvironments.
