Three New Species

Three new species of armoured scale insect from Iran, namely Cryptoparlatoreopsis kermanensis sp. n., Diaspis quercus sp. n., and Hemiberlesia uramanica sp. n. are described and illustrated, based on morphology of the adult female. Identification keys to the world species of Cryptoparlatoreopsis and to the Iranian species of Diaspis and Hemiberlesia are provided.

Members of the scale insect family Ortheziidae (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) occur all over the world but these small, delicate insects are difficult to find. The largest genus in the Ortheziidae is Newsteadia Green. Previous studies have recorded four species of Newsteadia in China. This study describes and illustrates the adult female, male, prepupal male, and first-, second- and third-instar nymphs of a fifth species, Newsteadia fanjingensis sp. n., from Guizhou Province, China, collected above 2000 m altitude under thick moss on the bark of Acer sp. Identification keys are provided to the adult females of Newsteadia species known in China, and the adult males known worldwide.

Three new species of the genus Araeopteron Hampson, 1893: A. dawaisp. nov., A. medogensissp. nov. and A. tibetasp. nov. are described from Motuo (= Medog) County of the Xizang Autonomous Region (= Tibet), China. The imagines as well as the male genitalia are illustrated. A checklist of the 45 species of the genus Araeopteron in the world fauna is presented, including recently and presently described species.

A New Species

A new species of soft scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae), Luzulaspis kinakikir Tanaka sp. nov., collected from Carex miyabei (Cyperaceae), on Hokkaido Island, Japan, is described and illustrated based on adult female morphology. The new species, which belongs to the Scotica group of Luzulaspis, is similar to L. filizae Kaydan, 2015, but can be distinguished from it by possessing multilocular pores with fewer loculi; numerous dorsal tubular ducts, obviously wider than the ventral tubular ducts, and by lacking dorsal tubular ducts on the head apex. An updated diagnosis of Luzulaspis and two identification keys, one to the Japanese species of Luzulaspis and the other to the species of the Scotica group of Luzulaspis, are provided.

AbstractThe seven species of Lonchaeidae described by de Meijere from south-east Asia (all placed by him in the genus Lonchaea) are redescribed, compared with their relatives, and assigned to their proper genera: Lonchaea minuta, L. pugionata, Silba gibbosa, S. lucens, S. obscuripennis, S. setifera (all from Java), and S. cupraria (from Krakatau). Lectotypes are designated for all except cupraria which is known from the holotype only. L. minuta is a prior name for lambiana Bezzi (= longicornis Lamb). S. obscuripennis (= zopherosa McAlpine) is a junior synonym of S. atratula (Walker). Three new species, L. marshalli from Natal, L. hennigi from Formosa, and S. vanemdeni from Malaya, are described. Keys to the world species of the L. impressifrons and of the S. abstata groups of species are provided. The genitalia of 16 species are figured.

Four species of Pedioxestis Meyrick, 1932 are recorded from China, including three that are described as new: P. concaviuscula, sp. n., P. bipartita, sp. n., and P. wuyiensis, sp. n. An amended diagnosis of the genus is presented based on the new species. Photographs of the adults and genitalia of the Chinese species are provided, along with a key to the world species.

Eighteen species of the genus Macropes Motschulsky from China are treated in the paper, in which M. varipennis (Walker, 1872) and M. dilutus Distant, 1901 are newly recorded from China; M. bambusiphilus Zheng & Zou, 1982 and M. slateri Zheng & Wang, 1987 are treated as new junior synonymies of M. robustus Zheng & Zou, 1982; three of them, M. complanus sp. nov., M. testaceus sp. nov., and M. peculiaris sp. nov., are described as new to science. Photographs of all eighteen species and drawings of genitalia of new species and newly recorded species from China are illustrated, along with those modified parts of the key to the World species of Macropes in Slater (1979). The type specimens of the new species are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, College of Life Sciences, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

The spider mite genus Neotetranychus Trägårdh is reported for the first time from Saudi Arabia (SA) based on N. longisetus n. sp., collected from Heliotropium arbainense (Boraginaceae). The new species is described and illustrated from the adult female, and three species, Mixonychus (Bakerina) aculus (Chaudhri), Paraplonobia (Anaplonobia) harteni (Meyer) and Sonotetranychus daleae (Tuttle and Baker) (Acari: Tetranychidae) are reported as new to the mite fauna of SA. Mixonychus (B.) aculus (Chaudhri) is re-described and illustrated based on adult female, collected from an exotic mesquite species from Mexico and Caribbean, Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. (Fabaceae). Moreover, the species, Evertella orissaensis (Prasad) n. comb., is moved from the genus Mixonychus Ryke and Meyer to the genus Evertella Meyer and Mixonychus (Bakerina) ganjuis (Qian, Yuan and Ma) n. comb., is moved to the subgenus Bakerina Chaudhri from the subgenus Mixonychus. A key to the world species of the genus Mixonychus is also provided. Additionally, legs chaetotaxy of all known species of the genus Mixonychus is given.

The scale insect fauna recorded on the pigmy mistletoe genus Korthalsella (Viscaceae) and New Zealand’s loranthaceous mistletoes is reviewed. Three new species from New Zealand discovered on Korthalsella species during this study are described: the adult female, 2nd-instar male and female nymphs of two pupillarial species Leucaspis albotecta sp. nov. and Leucaspis trilobata sp. nov. (Diaspididae); and the adult female, 2nd-instar male and female nymphs and 1st-instar nymph of Eriococcus korthalsellae sp. nov. (Eriococcidae). A distribution map is provided for the three new species. We report the first records of adventive (exotic) scale insects on Korthalsella species in New Zealand – Ceroplastes sinensis Del Guercio, Coccus hesperidum Linnaeus, soft brown scale, Saissetia coffeae (Walker), hemispherical scale, S. oleae (Olivier), black scale (Coccidae), and Aspidiotus nerii Bouché, oleander scale, Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret), latania scale, H. rapax (Comstock), greedy scale (Diaspididae), while three native scale insects are also first records: Kalasiris perforata (Maskell) (Coccidae), Eriococcus pallidus Maskell (Eriococcidae) and Paracoccus glaucus (Maskell) (Pseudococcidae). Ten scale insect species are listed for New Zealand’s loranthaceous mistletoes.

The world species of the microgastrine genus Paroplitis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are revised. Three new species are described, P. horticola Fujie & Fernandez-Triana, sp. nov. and P. japonicus Fujie & Fernandez-Triana, sp. nov. from Japan and P. kakhetiensis Fujie, Japoshvili & Fernandez-Triana, sp. nov. from Georgia. P. vietnamensis van Achterberg & Fernandez-Triana, 2013 is re-described, based on additional specimens. P. wesmaeli Ruthe, 1860 is recorded from Georgia for the first time. A key to the nine known species (eight described and one undescribed) of the genus is provided.
