Emotional dialogue generation aims to generate appropriate responses that are content relevant with the query and emotion consistent with the given emotion tag. Previous work mainly focuses on incorporating emotion information into the sequence to sequence or conditional variational auto-encoder (CVAE) models, and they usually utilize the given emotion tag as a conditional feature to influence the response generation process. However, emotion tag as a feature cannot well guarantee the emotion consistency between the response and the given emotion tag. In this article, we propose a novel Dual-View CVAE model to explicitly model the content relevance and emotion consistency jointly. These two views gather the emotional information and the content-relevant information from the latent distribution of responses, respectively. We jointly model the dual-view via VAE to get richer and complementary information. Extensive experiments on both English and Chinese emotion dialogue datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed Dual-View CVAE model, which significantly outperforms the strong baseline models in both aspects of content relevance and emotion consistency.

AbstractAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease showing dynamic clonal evolution patterns over time. Various subclones may be present simultaneously and subclones may show a different expansion pattern and respond differently to applied therapies. It is already clear that immunophenotyping and genetic analyses may yield overlapping, but also complementary information. Detailed information on the genetic make-up of immunophenotypically defined subclones is however scarce. We performed error-corrected sequencing for 27 myeloid leukemia driver genes in 86, FACS-sorted immunophenotypically characterized normal and aberrant subfractions in 10 AML patients. We identified three main scenarios. In the first group of patients, the two techniques were equally well characterizing the malignancy. In the second group, most of the isolated populations did not express aberrant immunophenotypes but still harbored several genetic aberrancies, indicating that the information obtained only by immunophenotyping would be incomplete. Vice versa, one patient was identified in which genetic mutations were found only in a small fraction of the immunophenotypically defined malignant populations, indicating that the genetic analysis gave an incomplete picture of the disease. We conclude that currently, characterization of leukemic cells in AML by molecular and immunophenotypic techniques is complementary, and infer that both techniques should be used in parallel in order to obtain the most complete view on the disease.

Abstract Background: The evaluations of handgrip strength (HGS) weakness and asymmetry have implications for the comprehensive geriatric assessment. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of HGS weakness and asymmetry on cardiovascular outcomes in elderly outpatients. Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study of 364 geriatrics outpatients aged ≥ 60 years, in which all participants performed HGS tests at baseline. Patients with HGS < 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women were diagnosed as HGS weakness, and HGS ratio < 0.90 or > 1.10 were diagnosed as HGS asymmetry. Primary outcomes defined as the major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) and composite endpoints were assessed during 21-month median follow-up.Results: Among 364 participants, 155 (42.6%) demonstrated HGS weakness, and 160 (44.0%) demonstrated HGS asymmetry. HGS weakness was associated with MACE (HR: 2.763, 95%CI: 1.217-6.272) and composite endpoints (HR: 2.842, 95%CI: 1.399-5.774). However, no significant correlation between HGS asymmetry and cardiovascular outcomes was observed. Compared with the normal and symmetric HGS group, older adults with HGS weakness and asymmetry together had a higher risk of MACE (HR: 5.229, 95%CI: 1.559-17.542) and composite endpoints (HR: 4.002, 95%CI: 1.558-10.277). Conclusion: HGS weakness and asymmetry together may increase the risk of cardiovascular outcomes in elderly outpatients. HGS asymmetry offers complementary information to HGS weakness when making a comprehensive assessment of HGS.

FT-Raman, FTIR, and SERS spectra of the structurally related gallnut polyphenols tannic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, and syringic acid are reported in this work aiming at performing a comparative assignation of the bands and finding specific marker features that can identify these compounds in complex polyphenol mixtures. Tannic and gallic acids are the principal components in oak gallnuts, and they can be found in iron gall inks. The different functional groups existing in these molecules and their spatial distribution lead to slight changes of the vibrations. The Raman spectra are dominated by bands corresponding to the ring vibrations, but the substituents in the ring strongly affect these vibrations. In contrast, the FTIR spectra of these molecules are dominated by the peripheral oxygen-containing substituents of the aromatic ring and afford complementary information. SERS spectroscopy can be used to analyze trace amounts of these compounds, but the spectra of these polyphenols show strong changes in comparison with the Raman spectra, indicating a strong interaction with the metal. The most significant modification observed in the SERS spectra of these compounds is the weakening of the benzene 8a ring vibration and the subsequent intensification of the 19a mode of the benzene ring. This mode is also more intense in the FTIR spectra, and its intensification in the SERS spectra could be related to a drastic change in the molecular polarizability associated with the interaction of the polyphenol with the metal in Ag NPs.

Traditional urban scene-classification approaches focus on images taken either by satellite or in aerial view. Although single-view images are able to achieve satisfactory results for scene classification in most situations, the complementary information provided by other image views is needed to further improve performance. Therefore, we present a complementary information-learning model (CILM) to perform multi-view scene classification of aerial and ground-level images. Specifically, the proposed CILM takes aerial and ground-level image pairs as input to learn view-specific features for later fusion to integrate the complementary information. To train CILM, a unified loss consisting of cross entropy and contrastive losses is exploited to force the network to be more robust. Once CILM is trained, the features of each view are extracted via the two proposed feature-extraction scenarios and then fused to train the support vector machine classifier for classification. The experimental results on two publicly available benchmark data sets demonstrate that CILM achieves remarkable performance, indicating that it is an effective model for learning complementary information and thus improving urban scene classification.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) free light chains (FLCs) can be an alternative assay to oligoclonal bands (OCBs) in inflammatory neurological disorders, but threshold has no consensus. Objective: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of CSF FLCs in multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological diseases. Methods: A total of 406 patients from five Italian centers. FLCs were measured in CSF and serum using Freelite MX assays on Optilite. Results: A total of 171 patients were diagnosed as MS, 154 non-inflammatory neurological diseases, 48 inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases, and 33 peripheral neurological diseases. Both kFLC and λFLC indices were significantly higher in patients with MS compared to other groups ( p < 0.0001). The kFLC index ⩾ 6.4 is comparable to OCB for MS diagnosis (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.876; sensitivity 83.6% vs 84.2%; specificity 88.5% vs 90.6%). λFLC index ⩾ 5 showed an AUC of 0.616, sensitivity of 33.3% and specificity of 90.6%. In all, 12/27 (44.4%) MS patients with negative OCB had kFLC index ⩾ 6.4. Interestingly, 37.5% of 24 patients with a single CSF IgG band showed high kFLC index and 12.5% positive λFLC index. Conclusion: Our findings support the diagnostic utility of FLC indices in MS and other CNS inflammatory disorders, suggesting a combined use of FLC and OCB to help clinicians with complementary information.

Objective: To explore patients’ experiences of a self-administered electrotherapy treatment for muscle spasticity in cerebral palsy and stroke; the Exopulse Mollii Suit®. Design: Qualitative design with an inductive approach Subjects: Fifteen patients with spasticity due to stroke or cerebral palsy, participating in a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the treatment concept.  Methods: Information letters were sent to all potential participants (n = 27) in the previous study. Semi-structured interviews (21–57 min) were carried out with all subjects who volunteered (n = 15), administered by an experienced interviewer who was not involved in the previous study. Transcribed interviews were subject to content analysis.  Results: The 5 categories that emerged from the content analysis were “New method gives hope”, experiences related to “Using the assistive technology”, “Outcome from training with the assistive technology”, “The assistive technology” and “Taking part in the study”. Respondents felt hopeful when included in the previous study, motivated when experiencing a treatment effect, and disappointed when not.  Conclusion: The qualitative approach used in this study elicited complementary information that was not evident from the previous RCT. This included statements regarding increased mobility, reduced spasticity, reduced use of medication, and problems related to using the treatment concept.

Color and polarization provide complementary information about the world and are detected by specialized photoreceptors. However, the downstream neural circuits that process these distinct modalities are incompletely understood in any animal. Using electron microscopy, we have systematically reconstructed the synaptic targets of the photoreceptors specialized to detect color and skylight polarization in Drosophila, and we have used light microscopy to confirm many of our findings. We identified known and novel downstream targets that are selective for different wavelengths or polarized light, and followed their projections to other areas in the optic lobes and the central brain. Our results revealed many synapses along the photoreceptor axons between brain regions, new pathways in the optic lobes, and spatially segregated projections to central brain regions. Strikingly, photoreceptors in the polarization-sensitive dorsal rim area target fewer cell types, and lack strong connections to the lobula, a neuropil involved in color processing. Our reconstruction identifies shared wiring and modality-specific specializations for color and polarization vision, and provides a comprehensive view of the first steps of the pathways processing color and polarized light inputs.

An annotated checklist with complementary information for leptophlebiid mayflies from Tocantins State, Brazil is provided. Additionally, we describe a new species of Thraulodes Ulmer, 1920 based on male adults. New reports are based on collections conducted between August 2017 and August 2019 in 13 localities of 10 municipalities. A total of 436 adults distributed in 11 genera, 16 species and five morphospecies treated as undescribed species were collected. Of the total species examined, 11 are new records.

A noncontact photoacoustic and fluorescence dual-modality imaging system is proposed, which integrates a fiber-based fluorescence imaging system with noncontact photoacoustic imaging using a specially fabricated double-cladding fiber (DCF) coupler and a DCF lens. The performance of the DCF coupler and lens was evaluated, and the feasibility of this new imaging system was demonstrated using simple tubing phantoms with black ink and fluorophore. Our imaging results demonstrated that the multimodal imaging technique can simultaneously acquire photoacoustic and fluorescence images without coming into contact with the sample. Consequently, the developed method is the first noncontact scheme among multimodal imaging systems that is integrated with a photoacoustic imaging system, which can provide varied and complementary information about the sample.
