A striking sexually dimorphic new species of Castolus (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae) from Colombia, with new records from Neotropical countries and taxonomic notes on the genus

The New World genus Castolus Stål, 1858 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae) contains 16 described species. Based on material from northern Colombia we describe Castolus rafaeli sp. nov., and key all known species. The following new synonyms are proposed: Castolus nigriventris Breddin, 1904 = C. bicolor Maldonado, 1976, syn. nov.; and C. subinermis (Stål, 1862) = C. annulatus Maldonado & Brailovsky, 1992, syn. nov. = Mucrolicter alienus Elkins, 1962, syn. nov. Because M. alienus is the type species of the currently monotypic genus Mucrolicter Elkins, 1962, the proposed synonymy results in the following generic synonym: Castolus Stål, 1858 = Mucrolicter Elkins, 1962, syn. nov. New country records are provided for two species: Castolus plagiaticollis Stål, 1858 is recorded new for Colombia; and Castolus rufomarginatus Champion, 1899 for Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador. Additional localities are provided for species from Colombia and other Neotropical countries based on both specimens from entomological collections and observations from the citizen science initiative iNaturalist.

AbstractOmiodes Guenée is redescribed based on all New World species, including the type species O. humeralis Guenée. Four new species from Costa Rica, O. janzeni sp. n., O. hallwachsae sp. n., O. sirena sp. n., O. ochracea sp. n., are described. Ten new synonymies are established : Phostria disciiridescens Hampson is =O. croeceiceps (Walker), Phostria cayennalis Schaus is =O. grandis (Druce), Omiodes ochrosoma Felder & Rogenhofer and Phryganodes gazalis Schaus are =O. pandaralis (Walker), Nacoleia lenticurvalis Hampson, Phryganodes anchoritalis Dyar, and Phostria duplicata Kaye are =O. confusalis (Dognin), O. cervinalis Amsel is =O. martvralis (Lederer), Nacoleia indicata ab. pigralis Dognin and Botis fortificalis Möschler are =O. metricalis (Möschler). One new combination is recognized: O. pandaralis (Walker) was transferred from Coelorhynchidia Hampson. A key and an updated checklist to the neotropical Omiodes species is provided, including O. indicata (Fabricius), a worldwide pest. Ten species that do not belong in Omiodes are retained until appropriate generic placements are identified.

The former monotypic genus Armillipora Quate, known only from Costa Rica and Panama, is redescribed, including the type species A. selvica Quate, this time collected on the Caribbean side of Nicaragua, RAAN department, and illustrated based on male morphological characters. The male of a new species, A. suapiensis sp. nov., from Bolivia, La Paz department, is described here and also figured.

The previously monotypic genus Motonerus Hansen, 1989 is revised and redefined. Seven new species are described: Motonerus andersoni FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Costa Rica, Panama), M. apterus FikáÖek & Short, sp. n., (Venezuela, Colombia), M. depressus FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Colombia), M. hanseni FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Costa Rica), M. nublado FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Venezuela), M. oosternoides FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Panama), and M. problematicus FikáÖek & Short, sp. n. (Costa Rica). Two additional new species from Bolivia are left undescribed pending the collection of males. New records are given for the previously described species, M. obscurus Hansen, which had been composite with respect to M. hanseni sp. n. Almost all collections of the genus are associated with cloud and montane forest litter. A key to the species of the genus is provided along with comments on the relationship of the genus with others in the tribe Megasternini. The unusual flightless condition found in M. apterus and M. oosternoides is discussed. The male genitalia and other key characters are illustrated.

The male of Paradossenus pulcher Sierwald, 1993 and a new species, P. macuxi, from Roraima, Northern Brazil are described and illustrated for the first time. The monotypic genus Magnichela Silva & Lise, 2006 is a junior synonym of Paradossenus F.O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1903. Paradossenus amazonensis Carico & Silva, 2010 is a junior synonym of Magnichela santaremensis Silva & Lise, 2006 (type species). New data on the Brazilian distributions of Paradossenus acanthocymbium Carico & Silva, 2010, P. tocantins Carico & Silva, 2010 and P. pozo Carico & Silva, 2010 are presented.

The species of the New World genus Ecnomocephala Gibson (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eupelmidae: Eupelminae) are revised. Seven species are recognized, the type species, E. townesi Gibson, 1995 (♀♂: USA), and the following six new species: E. ashei Gibson n. sp. (♀♂: French Guiana, Guyana, Venezuela), E. boliviensis Gibson n. sp. (♀: Bolivia), E. gilli Gibson n. sp. (♀♂: Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama), E. hypha Gibson n. sp. (♀: Costa Rica), E. retia Gibson n. sp. (♀: Mexico), and E. speculum Gibson n. sp. (♀: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru). The species are illustrated through macrophotography and keyed. Morphology of the sexes is compared to each other relative to sexual dimorphism and examined for implications for inferring function, character-state evolution, and phylogenetic relationships within the subfamily.

A new species of Multumbo Roewer, 1927 (Gonyleptidae: Hernandariinae), M. dimorphicus sp. nov., is described from Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. It presents sexual dimorphism in leg IV, contrasting remarkably with the type species of the hitherto monotypic genus Multumbo and the closest genera (Piassagera Roewer, 1928 and Pseudotrogulus Roewer, 1932), which were all thought to have lost this dimorphism. The presence of sexual dimorphism in M. dimorphicus implies a complex scenario of loss or reversal of this character. New records are given of type species of genus, Multumbo terrenus Roewer, 1913, for which a lectotype is designated. New diagnoses are provided for Hernandariinae and Multumbo. Multumbo and Piassagera are transferred from the Gonyleptinae to the Hernandariinae.Uma nova espécie de Multumbo Roewer, 1927, M. dimorphicus sp. nov., é descrita do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Ela apresenta dimorfismo sexual na perna IV, condição em notável contraste com a espécie-tipo do até então gênero monotípico Multumbo e com os gêneros mais relacionados, Piassagera Roewer, 1928 e Pseudotrogulus Roewer, 1932, nos quais esse dimorfismo era considerado como perdido. A presença de dimorfismo sexual em M. dimorphicus sugere um complexo cenário de perda ou reversão desse dimorfismo. Também foram incluídos novos registros da espécie-tipo do gênero, Multumbo terrenus Roewer, 1913, e um lectótipo é designado. Novas diagnoses para Hernandariinae and Multumbo são apresentadas. Multumbo e Piassagera são aqui transferidos de Gonyleptinae para Hernandariinae.

Setostylus xoxo spec. nov., is described and illustrated from Morelos, Mexico and southern Arizona, USA and is compared with similar Neotropical congeners. Additionally, the first records of Setostylus bellulus (Williston) are provided from Guatemala and Costa Rica and an updated key to the New World species of Setostylus is presented.

This catalogue contains literature reports and new records of Costa Rican Hepaticae and Anthocerotae, proceeding from monographs, revisions, floristic inventories, ecological bryophyte studies and herbarium specimens. The nomenclature has been updated in several genera. A total of 582 hepatic and eight hornwort species are reported from Costa Rica. The present work adds 26 new species records, and excludes 49 dubious records. Three new synonyms are proposed: Taxilejeunea carinata Herzog (=Lejeunea anomala Lindenb. & Gottsche); Taxilejeunea standleyi Herzog (=T. obtusangula [Spruce] A. Evans) and Syzygiella gracillima Herzog (=S. perfoliata [Sw.] Spruce).

The planthopper genus Haplaxius Fowler has a New World distribution. Kramer (1979) revised the New World Myndus Stål, consisting of 63 species. In that revision, Kramer synonymized Haplaxius and Paramyndus Fennah under Myndus, and P. cocois Fennah (1945), the type species of Myndus, as a junior synonym of M. crudus. Emeljanov (1989) reinstated the genus Haplaxius Fowler for the New World species formerly in Myndus. These consequent name changes have been accepted by all subsequent taxonomists (e.g., see Holzinger et al. 2002) but use of the name Myndus, when referring to New World species is still widely used, erroneously, in the applied literature.

Two new iassine leafhopper genera, Nigrojassus gen. nov. and Neotrocnada gen. nov. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) from Ecuador are described and illustrated. Nigrojassus gen. nov. is closely related to Hoplojassus Dietrich based on the elongate scutellum, arcuate base of the hindwing, leg chaetotaxy and flattened subgenital plate. Two new species, N. madhurai sp. nov. and N. ananthi sp. nov. are described in the genus. Neotrocnada is a monotypic genus with Neotrocnada napoensis sp. nov. as type species. Homologies of the highly modified structures of the male genitalia of Neotrocnada are assessed based on comparison to other New World genera.
