This article takes a hauntological approach to explore Shane Meadows's preoccupation with (post)traumatic return, focusing on the TV series The Virtues (Channel 4, 2019) and This Is England ’88 (Channel 4, 2011), which are correlatives in their sophisticated explication of hauntological trauma. Using Jacques Derrida's theoretical neologism ‘hauntology’, the haunting cycles which are signatures in Meadows's work are understood as spectres of an unresolved past and symptoms of repressed knowledge. As explored by Meadows, the psychological breakdowns of key characters Joseph and Lol are articulated as a ghostly resurfacing of unprocessed trauma from the past. By highlighting Meadows's use of return, remembrance and redemption as a triadic narrative pattern, the article will show how Meadows depicts the transformative efficacy of traumatic return through using the haunting as a potentially restorative device.

Metabolic syndrome and related complications are a major challenge for health providers of present era. Metabolic syndrome with key characters of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia are the outcomes of faulty diet and habits. Since there are no such pharmacological agents which can reverse this condition more importance is being given to diet and lifestyle modifications. Traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda gives equal importance for food and nutrition in both health and diseased conditions. Concept of Pathya -apathya for each and every disease is unique to Ayurveda where the macro and micronutrient principles were selected rationally for each disease conditions. These very principles can be adopted along with dietary supplements for curbing modern lifestyle disorders, more over there is mentioning of similar conditions in classics under a board term of Santharpanajanya Vikaras. Materials and methods- Thorough literary search done on various classical Ayurvedic texts for various diet and dietary preparations and online bases for their pharmacological properties from Ayurvedic and modern perspective and enlisted the dietary supplements. Results- Selected three major ingredients for the macro nutrient principles carbohydrate, protein and fat suggestive for MS from Sthoulya Prakarana and their properties are critically reviewed. Conclusion- There is enough scope of research in Ayurvedic dietary supplements for obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

Abstract Charybdis (Archias) hongkongensis Shen, 1934 was collected from the Indian coast of the Bay of Bengal and this is the first record from Indian waters. The distinct key characters of this species are: a relatively more produced last antero-lateral tooth, strongly convergent postero-lateral margins, and a smooth, rounded, reduced apex of the male first gonopod. This is the ninth member of Charybdis (Archias) Alcock, 1899 from Indian waters. The species is diagnosed and figured herein.

The systematics of four species of the homolodromiid genus Dicranodromia A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, from East Asia and the Philippines is reappraised: D. danielae Ng & McLay, 2005, D. doederleini Ortmann, 1892, D. karubar Guinot, 1993, and D. martini Guinot, 1995; and key characters such as the epistome, gonopods, and spermatheca are figured in detail. Two new species, D. erinaceussp. nov. and D. robustasp. nov., are described from Taiwan and the Philippines, respectively. Dicranodromia erinaceussp. nov. resembles D. spinulata Guinot, 1995, and D. delli Ahyong, 2008 (from New Caledonia and New Zealand) but can be separated by its distinctly spinulated carapace surfaces and proportionately shorter fifth ambulatory legs. Dicranodromia robustasp. nov. is superficially similar to D. baffini (Alcock & Anderson, 1899) and D. karubar Guinot, 1993, but can easily be separated by possessing a broad dorsoventrally flattened infraorbital tooth. A genetic study of the species using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene confirms that the taxa are distinct, with D. erinaceussp. nov. coming out in a well-supported clade from congeners. The megalopa of D. doederleini is also reported for the first time.

In this paper, a keyword detection scheme is proposed based on deep convolutional neural networks for personal information protection in document images. The proposed scheme is composed of key character detection and lexicon analysis. The first part is the key character detection developed based on RetinaNet and transfer learning. To find the key characters, RetinaNet, which is composed of convolutional layers featuring a pyramid network and two subnets, is exploited to detect key characters within the region of interest in a document image. After the key character detection, the second part is a lexicon analysis, which analyzes and combines several key characters to find the keywords. To train the model of RetinaNet, synthetic image generation and data augmentation are exploited to yield a large image dataset. To evaluate the proposed scheme, many document images are selected for testing, and two performance measurements, IoU (Intersection Over Union) and mAP (Mean Average Precision), are used in this paper. Experimental results show that the mAP rates of the proposed scheme are 85.1% and 85.84% for key character detection and keyword detection, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is superior to Tesseract OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software for detecting the key characters in document images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively localize and recognize these keywords within noisy document images with Mandarin Chinese words.

This paper sheds the first light on the phylogeny of the Central Asian genus Turanium Baeckmann, 1922. By applying an integrative taxonomy approach, we revealed and described a new species from Kyrgyzstan—Turanium losi Karpiński, Plewa & Hilszczański sp. nov. Distinguishing characters from closely related Turanium pilosum (Reitter, 1891) are presented and their ecological associations are discussed. The key characters, including the male terminalia, were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. High-quality stacked photographs of the habitus of the specimens are presented for both species and their geographical distributions are mapped. While the new species shows stable morphological characters that allow its differentiation from T. pilosum and the COI genetic distance between them is approx. 3%, the different species delimitation methods gave discordant results. Although the new species remained unrecognized for so long, it seems that these cerambycids are common in the region and both can be considered potentially invasive as they are apparently highly polyphagous. It has also been documented that they occur sympatrically in Kyrgyzstan. Both the Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses of COI sequences confirmed the monophyly of the genus Turanium with strong support (PP 1 and BS 90, respectively). Moreover, the recently revealed polyphyly of the tribe Callidiini was supported by our analyses and, consequently, the discussion on the establishment of a new tribe Ropalopini is raised. This study further corroborates the effectiveness of DNA barcoding as a tool in detecting new species and provides some of the first sequences for Central Asian cerambycids, which remain almost completely unknown in terms of molecular studies.

Here we describe a new hornerid, Hornera currieae n. sp. (Bryozoa: Cyclostomatida) from bathyal depths across the New Zealand region. Colonies are irregular, finely branched fans attaining ~40 mm or more in height. Key characters include: (1) thick, semi-hyaline porcellanous skeleton; (2) loss or reduction of nervi (longitudinal striae) away from growing tips; (3) sparse, threadlike cancelli; and (4) small (61–87 µm), widely spaced autozooidal apertures. Diagnostic hornerid traits possessed by H. currieae n. sp. include vertical ancestrular tube, periancestrular budding of daughter zooids, and skeletal ultrastructure dominated by hexagonal semi-nacre grading to pseudofoliated fabric. The abfrontal incubation chamber develops from a cryptic tube arising from the frontally positioned aperture of the fertile zooid. We used SEM, micro-CT and electron backscatter diffractometry (EBSD) to investigate the ultrastructure and internal architecture of H. currieae n. sp. EBSD reveals that crystalline c-axes of laminated crystallites are perpendicular to skeletal walls. Threadlike cancelli, which traverse secondary calcification, connect autozooidal chambers to the colony-wide hypostegal cavity. Micro-CT reveals that abfrontal cancelli usually bend proximally towards the base, but turn distally towards reproductively active regions of the colony in synchrony with gonozooid development. The zone of affected cancelli extends for 4–7 branch internodes below the gonozooid. We assessed whether skeletal ultrastructure was similarly affected, but neither cancellus direction, nor gonozooid proximity, were predictive of the crystallite imbrication direction. We hypothesise that (1) hornerid cancelli are active conduits for colonial metabolite transport and (2) that changes in gradients of metabolites and/or reproductive morphogens within the hypostegal cavity affect cancellus morphogenesis. Potentially, H. currieae n. sp. skeletons may preserve a record of intra-colony metabolite translocation dynamics over time.

Abstract— Fossil fruits of Symplocos (Ericales: Symplocaceae) are here recognized from the Pliocene of Guasca, Colombia, based on specimens formerly attributed to Cordia (Cordiaceae, Boraginales). Symplocos vera (Berry) comb. nov. is represented by 19 lignitized fruits. The fossils are recognized as belonging to Symplocos primarily by their woody endocarps that are apically truncate and that possess 3 to 5 apical germination pores and locules, and a central vascular canal extending the length of the endocarp. In several key characters they are highly congruent with the endocarps of the extant Neotropical clade S. ser. Symplocos. Some of the extant species in the series are variably 3- to 5-locular; 4-locular endocarps are otherwise rare in Symplocos, and 5-locular endocarps appear to be unique to this series. Symplocos vera is the only specifically named record of fossil Symplocos fruits with accessible voucher specimens from South America. The younger Neogene age of the fossils relative to those attributed to S. ser. Symplocos from the late Eocene of Texas, along with a report of Colombian fossil endocarps from the middle Miocene, supports the North America to South America migration inferred for this clade from molecular phylogenetic data.

Though McGahern’s father was a police officer and his mother a schoolteacher, they had a small farm where the writer spent his childhood years, and it was this home territory of rural Roscommon and Leitrim that was central to his fiction. Recurrently in the novels and stories, the former Republican father, disillusioned with independent Ireland, rules over the farm as his own independent republic, but alienates the son whom he needs as heir. Amongst Women shows up the illusion of the patriarchal ideal of the family working together on the farm and its crippling gender politics. Yet, dissatisfaction with the city drives key characters back to the alternative life of the farm, as in ‘The Country Funeral’. In That They May Face the Rising Sun, McGahern creates his fullest version of the farming community, at once tenderly pastoral and caustically observed in its social reality.

Objective: This study was undertaken to carry out genetic barcoding, pharmacognostical and phytochemical studies on leaves of Pothos scandens L. belonging to the family Araceae. Methods: P. scandens, was collected from Cochin, Kerala, during the month of August 2019. Its leaves were examined for pharmacognostical characters and physicochemical, qualitative analysis and HPTLC studies was carried out following standard protocols recommended by the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Genetic barcoding of the fresh tender leaves samples was carried out through following standard methods. Results: Leaves are simple, alternate, broadly winged petiole. Transverse section through winged petiole portion showed U-shaped, epidermal cell along with cluster crystals. Transverse section through midrib boat-shaped structure, mesophyll undifferentiated, consist parenchyma cell, epidermis with thick cuticle along with waxy coating. Leaves powder shows green in color and microscopy reveals the presence of prismatic crystals, raphides, fibres, acicular crystals and monocot type 1 stomata. The plant is identified as Pothos scandens based on sequence homology and phylogenic analysis. Qualitative results show the presence of carbohydrates, protein, alkaloids and tannins. HPTLC profile shows 7 spots at both short UV and long UV and ferulic acid and kaempferol were identified through quantitative HPTLC. Conclusion: Pothos scandens is a climber with simple, alternate leaves. Acicular crystals and raphides, mucilaginous cavities, undifferentiated mesophyll are key characters of the identification of its leaf. DNA Barcoding results helps in correct identification of Pothos scandens. The results obtained from the phytochemical study will be helpful in the determination of the strength of purity and also for further standardization of the plant.
