Description of an unusual new Costa Rican species of Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) with additional notes on Neotropical species of Dizygomyza (Diptera: Agromyzidae)

Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) nigrihalterata sp. nov. is described from Costa Rica. This species is unusual in having black halteres, the presence of only one upper orbital seta and infuscated wings. Two additional species of Dizygomyza are newly recorded from the Neotropical region: Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) luctuosa (Meigen) and Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) scirpioides Zlobin. Two Neotropical species of Cerodontha previously assigned to Dizygomyza are reassigned to subgenus Butomomyza: Cerodontha (Butomomyza) puertoricencis Spencer new comb. and Cerodontha (Butomomyza) orcina Spencer new comb.

A revision of the Dixidae of Costa Rica indicates that 10 named species of Dixella are present, eight of which are described as new (described stages indicated): D. fernandezae (%), D. hansoni (%),  D. hernandezi (%), D. jironi (%), D. lobata (%, &), D. maculata (%, &), D. suzukii (%, &), D. woodi (%).  Two named species were previously known from Costa Rica: D. shannoni Lane (%, &) and D. venezuelensis Lane (%, &).  A key to the species of Costa Rica is provided and other similar Neotropical species discussed.  An overview of all Central American species is given.  Five of the 10 Costa Rican species were collected above 1200 meters in elevation, indicating that further collecting, especially at high elevations will reveal further species.  Five additional species from Costa Rica remain unnamed because they are represented only by females.  A total of 15 species of Dixella are therefore present in this country.

The Neotropical species of the genus Manota Williston are studied, based on material of 146 specimens from French Guiana, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Dominica and the Dominican Republic. Four new species are described, viz. M. corniculata sp. n. (French Guiana), M. pseudocavata sp. n. (French Guiana), M. truuverki sp. n. (French Guiana) and M. vladi sp. n. (Dominican Republic). Manota defecta Williston, 1896, the type species of the genus, is listed from Dominica, representing the first record since its description more than a century ago from a Southern Caribbean Island, St. Vincent. New records of 13 additional species are provided: M. acutistylus Jaschhof & Hippa, 2005 (Dominica), M. aligera Hippa, Kurina & Sääksjärvi, 2017 (French Guiana), M. digitata Hippa, Kurina & Sääksjärvi, 2017 (French Guiana), M. iota Hippa & Kurina, 2013 (French Guiana), M. micula Hippa & Kurina, 2013 (French Guiana), M. nordestina Kurina, Hippa & Amorim, 2018 (French Guiana), M. parva Jaschhof & Hippa, 2005 (Nicaragua), M. pauloides Hippa, Kurina & Sääksjärvi, 2017 (Ecuador), M. perplexa Kurina, Hippa & Amorim, 2017 (Nicaragua), M. rotundistylus Jaschhof & Hippa, 2005 (Ecuador), M. serrulata Hippa, Kurina & Sääksjärvi, 2017 (French Guiana), M. spinosa Jaschhof & Hippa, 2005 (French Guiana), M. subaristata Kurina, Hippa & Amorim, 2017 (Ecuador). The number of Neotropical Manota species has risen to 96.

A new genus and species, Lobomyia neotropica gen. nov., sp. nov., (Diptera: Tachinidae) is described from material from Colombia (type locality), Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Trinidad. The Colombian material was reared from Glena bisulca Rindge (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), a defoliator of introduced cypress trees. Costa Rican material was reared from several species of Lepidoptera: Notodontidae.

Prasmodon zlotnicki, a new Costa Rican species of the genus Prasmodon Nixon, is described and illustrated. In addition, the first host records for the genus are included along with an updated key to differentiate Prasmodon zlotnicki from P. eminens Nixon. Prasmodon is now known to attack several species of leaf-rolling and leaf-webbing Crambidae (Lepidoptera) in rain forest habitats.

The genus Leptodrepana Shaw was described in 1983, but prior to the current study only one Neotropical species had been described from Mexico and none were named from Costa Rica. A key to Costa Rican species of Leptodrepana is provided. The flagellum of all female Leptodrepana described in this work is reduced to only 17 flagellomeres. This character state is also found in two North American species described by Shaw (1983), L.opuntiae Shaw and L.oriens Shaw. It is hypothesized that a female antenna with 17 flagellomeres is a synapomorphy for a species-group comprising all the Costa Rican Leptodrepana species as well as two of the Mexican and North American species, L.opuntiae and L.oriens.

The described Neotropical species of the common and speciose fairyfly genus Gonatocerus Nees ab Esenbeck (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are reviewed and re-diagnosed. Eighty-four valid species are recognized including 11 newly described ones. Illustrated identification keys are provided to identify the 5 subgenera recognized in Gonatocerus and to females of each subgenus. The keys include 79 of the treated species, the other five species are known from males only. The known distribution ranges of the species, including new records of extralimital specimens examined, are given. Host associations of the treated species are also given, with emphasis on those species that parasitize eggs of proconiine sharpshooters (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Cicadellinae: Proconiini), all of which belong to the ater and morrilli subgroups of the ater species group of G. (Cosmocomoidea Howard), stat. rev. The other four recognized subgenera within Gonatocerus are the nominate subgenus, G. (Gonatocerus) (= sulphuripes species group of authors), G. (Lymaenon Walker), stat. rev. (= litoralis and straeleni species groups of authors), G. (Gastrogonatocerus Ogloblin), stat. rev. (= membraciphagus species group of authors), and G. (Gahanopsis Ogloblin), syn. n. & stat. n. (= deficiens species group of authors). Newly treated as synonyms of G. (Lymaenon) are Rachistus Foerster, Oophilus Enock, Agonatocerus Girault, Gonatoceroides Girault, and Decarthrius Debauche, all syn. n. Two species groups are recognized within G. (Cosmocomoidea) in the New World: the ater group, to which most Neotropical species belong (with the ater, bucculentus, morrilli, and the newly defined chusqueicolus subgroups) and the masneri group, with two described species from the Dominican Republic. The 11 new species described are G. (Gahanopsis) arkadak Triapitsyn sp. n. (Colombia), G. (Cosmocomoidea) barbos Triapitsyn sp. n. (Costa Rica and Mexico), G. (Cosmocomoidea) blefuscu Triapitsyn sp. n. (Costa Rica), G. (Cosmocomoidea) cuscus Triapitsyn sp. n. (Peru), G. (Cosmocomoidea) garchamp Triapitsyn sp. n. (Argentina), G. (Cos- mocomoidea) gerasim Triapitsyn sp. n. (Mexico), G. (Cosmocomoidea) hispaniolus Triapitsyn & Huber sp. n. (Dominican Republic), G. (Cosmocomoidea) kiskis Triapitsyn sp. n. (Argentina), G. (Cosmocomoidea) logarzoi Triapitsyn sp. n. (Argentina), G. (Cosmocomoidea) mumu Triapitsyn sp. n. (Argentina), and G. (Cosmocomoidea) rakitovi Triapitsyn sp. n. (Costa Rica). Seven new synonymies are proposed: Gonatocerus h-luteum (Ogloblin) syn. n. under G. (Cosmoco- moidea) nigriflagellum (Girault); G. enicmophilus Huber syn. n. and G. necator (Ogloblin) syn. n. under G. (Cosmoco- moidea) bonariensis (Brèthes); G. dimorphus (Ogloblin) syn. n. and G. monrosi (Ogloblin) syn. n. under G. (Gastrogonatocerus) margiscutum Girault; and G. setulosus (Ogloblin) syn. n. and G. dorsiniger (Ogloblin) syn. n. under G. (Gastrogonatocerus) membraciphagus Ogloblin. Litus maculipennis Ashmead, Gahanopsis deficiens (Ogloblin), and Gahanopsis straeleni (Debauche) are transferred to Gonatocerus as, respectively, G. The hymenopteran genus Trichacis is presumed to be endoparasitoid of Cecidomyiidae. Only three species of this genuswere hitherto recognized in the Neotropical region. Here, twenty four (24) new species are described based on 145 specimens: T. acarinata (Costa Rica), T. acuminata (Bolivia), T. acuta (Colombia), T. clypeata (Costa Rica), T.colombiana (Colombia), T. concavata (Costa Rica), T. corrugata (El Salvador, Mexico), T. costaricana (Costa Rica), T.delsinnei (Costa Rica), T. depressa (Costa Rica), T. dianae (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela), T. fernandezi (Ecuador), T.hansoni (Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama), T. kaulbarsi (Mexico), T. magnifica (Mexico), T. mexicana (Mexico),T. panamana (Panama), T. pecki (Ecuador), T. procera (Mexico), T. proximata (Costa Rica), T. punctata (Brazil), T.sculpturata (Mexico), T. transversata (Costa Rica), and T. triangulata (Mexico). A key for males and females of the 27 Neotropical species is provided.

The Costa Rican species of the genus Elachiptera are revised. There are seven described species in the region: Elachiptera attenuata (Adams); E. coniotrigona Duda; E. fucosa sp. n. (type locality: Costa Rica: Santo Domingo de Heredia); E. melinifrons sp. n. (type locality: Costa Rica: San José); E. queposana sp. n. (type locality: Costa Rica: Quepos); E. rubida Becker and E. sacculicornis (Enderlein). An additional species (Elachiptera sp. A) is known from a single female specimen and is not formally described. Only one of these species (E. attenuata) had previously been recorded from Costa Rica.

Nanium Townes, 1967 is a small New World parasitoid wasp genus in the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae Förster, 1869 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Previously, it comprised five species: one from North America and four from Costa Rica. The current study reviews the Neotropical species of the genus, and includes descriptions of two new species, N. medianum Reshchikov & Sääksjärvi sp. nov. from Ecuador and N. atitlanensis Reshchikov & Sääksjärvi sp. nov. from Guatemala. A key to the species is provided.

A checklist of the fishes of the Coto River basin, southern Pacific, Costa Rica, compiled from field and museum surveys is presented. A total of 61 species, representing 48 genera, 26 families and 11 orders are listed. Peripheral species were dominant (44.3%), whereas secondary and primary freshwater species represented 32.8% and 23.9% of the total diversity. The orders Cyprinodontiformes (12 spp.) and Perciformes (11) and the families Poeciliidae (8) and Cichlidae (7) were the most diverse. Two species (Lutjanus guttatus and Polydactylus approximans) were new records for Costa Rican freshwaters and ten additional species were found to have expanded geographical ranges. An identification key and a complete photographic album of all fish species recorded are presented. This investigation provides a framework for future studies on fishes from this area complementing previous efforts seeking to increase our knowledge about the freshwater ichthyofauna of the central and southern Pacific regions of Costa Rica.
