The Hierarchical Structure of Attitudes Toward the Exceptional

The structure of attitudes toward the exceptional was investigated using hierarchical factor analysis. The subjects were 132 men and 132 women college students who completed a 78 item social distance questionnaire (6 interpersonal situation and 13 categories of exceptionality-nonexceptionality). The results revealed a general factor concerning attitudes toward the disabled. This factor represented a common core of attitudes which cut across categories of disability and interpersonal situation. The general facto was differentiated into attitudes toward the physically disabled (with certain special emphases), attitudes toward the psychologically disabled, and attitudes toward the mildly retarded-nonexceptional. The last named factor was particularly provocative, indicating that, except for the closest interpersonal relationships (marriage and acceptance as close kin by marriage), the mildly retarded shared in the same configuration of attitudes as are held toward the nonexceptional. Attitudes toward the gifted emerged as a separate factor, isolated in virtually all instances from those held toward the disabled.

This study was concerned with the factorial validity of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). Previous research identified a strong general factor for this battery, which was taken as evidence of redundancy among the subtests. Hierarchical factor analysis was done with a subset of the standardization data to explore the presence of second-order group factors. The results supported the construct validity of the Language and Mathematics subscales, though a degree of factorial complexity was found in both. Verbal and Visual Information group factors were also identified. Extension of the ITBS general and group factors to subtests of the Cognitive Abilities Test supported the interpretations made of the various group factors.

A Wherry-Wherry (1969) hierarchical factor analysis was performed on WISC subtest intercorrelations reported by Wechsler (1949). An hierarchical ability arrangement congruent with Vernon's (1950) structural paradigm was obtained. A strong general factor (g) was defined by positive loadings from all subtests and two relatively weak subgeneral factors; a subgeneral factor corresponding to Vernon's (1950) verbal-educational (v:ed) factor was defined by the verbal subtests and another by the performance sub-rests. The latter seemed to correspond to the spatial-perceptual (k:m) factor of Vernon's (1950) paradigm. These data not only provided strong support for the construct validity of the WISC as a measure of g but also provided some conditional support for Wechsler's (1949) decision to maintain separate verbal and performance IQs.

Abstract Background Stigma associated with mental disorders is rooted among many pharmacists, and represents a major barrier to patient support in community-based psychiatry. We developed an assessment scale that is specifically designed to assess the level of stigma that pharmacists may have toward schizophrenia, and then examined the effects of reducing stigma with an educational program that focuses on communication with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (PDS) using the newly developed Stigma Scale towards Schizophrenia for Community Pharmacists (SSCP). Methods SSCP was developed by exploratory factor analysis with promax rotation based on responses from 822 randomly selected community pharmacists. Furthermore, a randomized controlled trial was conducted for 115 community pharmacists to clarify the effects of reducing the stigma of schizophrenia using an educational program for them with a focus on communication with PDS. Participants were individually allocated to two groups: educational lecture group (56; only attending a lecture on schizophrenia) or contact-based intervention group (59; communicating with PDS and attending the lecture). The stigma assessment using SSCP was conducted immediately before and after the educational intervention. Results A total of 4 factors and 27 items were extracted from the exploratory factor analysis to comprise the SSCP. Cronbach’s α of SSCP, social distance at professional pharmacy service (factor I), attitudes towards PDS (factor II), self-disclosure (factor III), and social distance in personal (factor IV) were 0.89, 0.88, 0.76, 0.62, and 0.62, respectively. Educational program-related changes of the median (interquartile range) total SSCP score from baseline were − 9.0 (− 16.0 – − 5.0) in the contact-based intervention group and − 3.0 (− 7.0–1.0) in the educational lecture group, reflecting a significant reduction of stigma levels in the contact-based intervention group. On examining the SSCP subscales, scores for factor I and factor II significantly improved. The educational program was more effective for pharmacists aged 20–39 years or with negligible experience of communicating with PDS at work and/or in private life. Conclusions SSCP and the educational program for community pharmacists that focuses on communication with PDS were useful for assessing and reducing, respectively, the stigma attached by these pharmacists to schizophrenia. A series of four experiments were conducted to examine viewer perceptions of three sets of five nonrepresentational paintings. Increased complexity was embedded in the hierarchical structure of each set by carefully selecting colors and ordering them in each successive painting according to certain rules of transformation which created hierarchies. Experiment 1 supported the hypothesis that subjects would discern the hierarchical complexity underlying the sets of paintings. In Experiment 2 viewers rated the paintings on collative (complexity, disorder) and affective (pleasing, interesting, tension, and power) scales, and a factor analysis revealed that affective ratings were tied to complexity (Factor 1) but not to disorder (Factor 2). In Experiment 3, a measure of exploratory activity (free looking time) was correlated with complexity (Factor 1) but not with disorder (Factor 2). Multidimensional scaling was used in Experiment 4 to examine perceptions of the paintings seen in pairs. Dimension 1 contrasted Soft with Hard-Edged paintings, while Dimension 2 reflected the relative separation of figure from ground in these paintings. Together these results show that untrained viewers can discern hierarchical complexity in paintings and that this quality stimulates affective responses and exploratory activity.

The Problem Persons with disabilities (PWD) are regarded as “the Other” and are sequestered from “normative” society because of their “Otherness.” “Othering” results in discrimination and the systemic preclusion of PWD. Ableism is the belief that being without a disability, impairment, or chronic illness is the norm. The notion that people without disabilities are the norm and are inherently superior is accepted without critique by those that advocate for authentic leadership. This privileges ableism and furthers the “Othering” of PWD within a leadership style intended to promote self-awareness, beliefs and ethics, and interpersonal relationships. The Solution The disabled experience and differently abled voice must be restored through relationally “being” with others and authentic dialogue. What is needed is a shift from the deficit model of authentic leadership to a social paradigm of authentic leadership, welcoming of bodily and psychic difference. This will better enable both leaders and employees to craft an authentic profile in the workplace. The Stakeholders Leaders and those who seek to become leaders following an authentic leadership approach can benefit from a better understanding of how their ingrained belief systems impact those that they lead who are both “able-bodied” and “disabled.” Human resource development (HRD) practitioners and leadership development practitioners can use this information to deconstruct and reconstruct leadership development opportunities to be inclusive as an authentic leader.

Social distance and social link are important in the relationships between teachers and pupils. This question deserves to be examined with a sociological eye. The aim of this book chapter is to clarify the meaning of the terms (“social distance” and “social link”) and to analyze the influences of the social distance reconfigurations on the behavior of the first towards the second. Based on interviews with secondary school teachers, this chapter aims to show how do the influences of social distance reconfigurations change or not their oral language practices.

Abstract Background Earlier studies indicate a correlation between disability claims experience and return to work outcomes. Thus, the insurer’s role and actions may affect the self-rated health of the disabled worker and the outcomes of occupational rehabilitation. This study diversifies the existing empirical evidence on the role of the insurer in the rehabilitation process and reveals the critical actions that best promote success. Materials and methods Explorative factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), followed by binary regression, were used to analyse survey data of disabled workers (n = 661) who had undergone an occupational rehabilitation within an earnings-related pension insurance system in Finland. Results The claimant’s perceptions of the insurer’s (1) high-quality informing and guidance, (2) customer orientation, (3) smooth process flow and (4) positive service attitude had substantial and statistically significant effects on the success of occupational rehabilitation after adjusting for all likely confounding variables. Conclusions The insurer’s actions are significant predictors of the outcome of occupational rehabilitation. The insurer can promote the health of rehabilitees most effectively by ensuring a smooth process flow and adopting a customer-oriented approach.

Background Perfectionism is often defined as the strive for achievement and high standards, but can also lead to negative consequences. In addition to affecting performance and interpersonal relationships, perfectionism can result in mental distress. A number of different self-report measures have been put forward to assess perfectionism. Specifically intended for clinical practice and research, the Clinical Perfectionism Questionnaire (CPQ) was developed and is presently available in English and Persian. To promote its use in additional contexts, the current study has translated and investigated the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the CPQ. Method A Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed to examine the best fit with data, using a priori-models and a sample of treatment-seeking participants screened for eligibility to receive Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (n = 223). Results The results indicated a lack of fit with data. A two-factor structure without the two reversed items (2 and 8) exhibited the best fit, perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns, but still had poor structural validity. Correlations with self-report measures of perfectionism, depression, anxiety, dysfunctional beliefs, self-criticism, quality of life, and self-compassion were all in the expected directions. Eight-week test-retest correlation was Pearson r = .62, 95% Confidence Interval [.45, .74], using data from 72 participants in the wait-list control, and the internal consistency for the CPQ, once removing the reversely scored items, was Cronbach’s α = .72. Conclusion The CPQ can be used as a self-report measure in Swedish, but further research on its structural validity is needed.

This chapter examines the way online language users enhance social interaction and group collaboration through the computer mediated communication (CMC) channel. For this, discourse analysis based on the linguistic politeness theoretical framework is applied to the transcripts of a real time online chat. Analysis of the data shows that online participants employ a variety of creative devices to signal nonverbal communication cues that serve to build interpersonal solidarity and rapport, as well as by seeking common ground and by expressing agreement online participants increase mutual understanding and harmonious social interaction. This sets the tone of positive interpersonal relationships and decreases the social distance among participants. In turn, this engenders solidarity and proximity, which enhances social interaction through the CMC channel.
