This paper by Pankaj Chandra and Trilochan Sastry reports the findings of a survey to study the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing sector. The paper identifies the priorities of Indian manufacturing firms, the programmes that they undertake to reach their objectives, and the outcome or the performance of these firms. The authors also present some international comparisons based on a similar study done in the US. The paper highlights the role of innovation and supply chain management as a part of any robust manufacturing strategy in developing world-class operations.

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between supply chain management practices (SCMP) on technological innovation in the manufacturing sector organizations of Pakistan. The supply chain management practices (SCMP) include in this study are strategic supplier partnership, information sharing, information quality, postponement and internal lean practices while technological innovation being the dependent variable. The target population for this study has been selected as the manufacturing sector in Pakistan. The study has collected 200 responses from the supply chain professionals of manufacturing firms of Karachi, Pakistan. For analysis of data, partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) named Smart PLS version 3.2.8 has been used. The finding of the study showed that supply chain management practices have a positive impact on technological innovation. The postponement has the highest impact and positive relation with technological innovation, then strategic supplier partnership was found to a positive and significant impact on technological innovation, while information quality has lower impact and positive relationship with technological innovation. The study suggests that manufacturing firms should implement proper supply chain management practices for making their product and process innovations. The paper will provide insights to the manufacturing firm how these supply chain management practices help in technological innovation.

A kis- és középvállalkozások (kkv-k) a legtöbb országban, így Magyarországon is kiemelt szerepet töltenek be a gazdaság életében. A velük kapcsolatos kutatások elérkeztek abba a fázisba, amikor például a kisvállalkozás- fejlesztés és az ellátásilánc-menedzsment összekapcsolásával megismerhetjük egy adott vállalati funkció szerepét és helyét a célcsoportban. A szerzők tanulmányukban egy kutatás eredményeit mutatják be, mely egyenrangú módon fókuszál a beszerzési tevékenység és a kkv-k sajátosságaira. A beszerzési aspektusok kiemelésével lehetőség van mélyebben megismerni a kkv-k bizonytalanságának forrásait, a beszállítókkal kapcsolatos igényeik megfogalmazását, a vevők preferenciáit, melyen keresztül általános kép kapható a szállítófejlesztés lehetőségeiről, kifejezetten a beszerzési tevékenység informatikai támogatásáról, továbbá véleményükről a beszerzés mint szolgáltatás kiszervezésével kapcsolatban. A kutatást megalapozó kérdőíves felmérés nemzeti összehasonlításra is lehetőséget ad, valamint segíti egy adott tevékenységre fókuszálva a hazai kis- és középvállalkozások helyzetének bemutatását. ______ Small and medium enterprises (SME) play an important role in the economy of Hungary, just like in most other countries. Studies on SMEs recently have focused on the role of a particular company function in the target group by linking the development of SMEs to new advanced options, such as supply chain management. This paper provides an overview of authors’ ques a questionnaire research focusing on the specific characteristics of both purchasing and SMEs. Focusing on the purchasing aspects enables us to gain a deeper knowledge on the main causes of the instability of SMEs as well as on their expectations regarding suppliers and a better understanding on the preferences of the clients. As a result authors can highlight the main options of developing the supply chain as well as the IT support of purchasing and they can state their opinion on the outsourcing of the purchasing as a service. The questionnaire survey providing the basis for the study enables authors to make international comparisons as well as to present the current state of the Hungarian SMEs focusing on a particular business activity.

The US shipbuilding industry finds itself pressed on many sides by dwindling government and commercial ship orders. Without significant improvement in performance, the US shipbuilding industry will contract to the minimum that can sustain government and Jones Act commercial ship demand. There has been considerable benchmarking of the US shipbuilding with other shipbuilding countries and other US and foreign industries. In these studies, the improved management of the supply chains has been found to be an important way to improve performance. The 1996 21s' Century Agile Shipbuilding Strategies report identified improvement in the relationship between shipyards and their suppliers as one of the highest priorities. In the marine industry over 50% of the cost of the delivered product is for material and equipment. When significant turn-key subcontracting is used this can increase to 75%. Over the past two decades, most US shipbuilders acknowledged that their productivity was significantly lower than world class shipbuilders. More recently they have acknowledged a material cost differential of up to 33%. Clearly, the cost of material is one of the major sources of the lack of international competitiveness of the US marine industry. The performance of the US automotive and aerospace industries has improved significantly by focusing on and improving their supply chain management. Much of Boeing's and Chrysler's improvement has been attributed to successful change in this area. This paper describes the results of a project that analyzed supply chain management in the marine industry as a way to develop a set of best practices.

This paper analyses the role of military logistics operations during the Vietnam War. It looks at the technical and strategic role of logistics, and the physical obstacles that had to be overcome in Vietnam. The US had highly sophisticated war machinery that was deployed in a country that lacked not only the transportation infrastructure (roads, ports, airports) but also had extreme terrain and climate conditions. On the other hand the Vietnamese had a well-oiled supply chain which often was carried on bicycles and literally on the backs of humans not only along the Ho Chi Minh Trail but throughout the north and south of Vietnam. On the US side helicopters played an important transportation role substituting land transport with air transport. The war effort escalated so rapidly that there was literally no time for logistics advancement operations and prepositioning of assets which resulted in a parallel run of war fighting and logistics operations. Naval operations had to provide their own landing crafts due to the lack of deep seaports with adequate lifting equipment. At the same time airlifts required runways and aircontrol facilities which needed to be provided by the US. Even the US Department of Defense (DOD) food supply chain was supported from abroad while local war fighters could live off the land. The Vietnam War logistics effort reached over to neighboring countries, and Thailand played an important role with its naval and airbases close to Sattahip, U-Tapao and northern parts of Thailand. There are valuable lessons to be learned for both military logistics as well as private sector supply chain management.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the robustness of the three (Bowersox and Daugherty, 1987) dimensions (process, market and information strategies) of logistics strategy in a Chinese manufacturing environment. In addition, the impact of the three dimensions, coordination and customer service on the organizational competitiveness of Chinese manufacturers firms is explored. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted an online survey hosted at Sojump.com and disseminated to members of a manufacturing trade association. A total of 513 completed responses were generated. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation model (SEM) were used to test the hypothesized relationships in the conceptual model. Findings The findings suggest that the three dimensions of the Bowersox and Daugherty (1987) were relevant to the Chinese manufacturing environment. The authors also found that the overall logistics strategy measured by the three dimensions as well as coordination and customer service effectiveness positively influenced Chinese manufacturing firms’ competiveness. Research limitations/implications Further research into logistics and supply chain management may benefit from expanding the understanding to include antecedents and moderating factors (e.g. competition, market turbulence and differences in business environment) into the model. Future studies on cross-cultural logistics/supply chain management logistics may benefit from the application of strategy-structure-process (SSP) approaches similar to those discussed in this manuscript. Practical implications This study attempted to provide a robust conceptual framework to increase the understanding of the role of logistics/supply chain management strategy and provide insights to managers seeking to improve firm competitiveness. An essential implication of the conceptual model presented in this manuscript is the dynamics of logistics strategy as a competitive tool. Social implications The findings provide an understanding of how business and manufacturing are operating in various locations in China with opportunities for employment and socio-economic gain among the population of these geographic locations. Having employment can provide a better quality of life and assist the community in developing its opportunities for other groups. Originality/value As the current Chinese administration seeks to achieve its goal of generating higher value-added production through its “Made in China 2025” initiative, the results the authors represent are quite timely and insightful. Examining manufacturing firms’ logistics strategies (i.e., OLS), coordination and customer service could provide state planners (SOEs) and/or privately owned Chinese manufacturers insights on how to move closer towards their aforementioned goal and achieve global competitiveness.
